Hurricane Sandy disrupts Northeast telecom networks

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Power outages and flooding caused by Hurricane Sandy disrupted telecommunications services on Tuesday resulting in spotty coverage for cellphones, home telephones and Internet services.

Verizon Communications , which serves many of the states in the hurricane's path, appeared to have suffered some of the worst damage from the storm.

The company said that storm surge resulted in flooding at several Verizon central offices that hold telecom equipment in Lower Manhattan, Queens, and Long Island "causing power failures and rendering back-up power systems at these sites inoperable."

It did not give an estimate as to how many people were affected but said that customers served by these central offices will experience "a loss of all services" including television, Internet, and traditional telephone services.

It said that some customers may experience intermittent busy signals for non-emergency calls.

"I think, everybody's equipment's going to be damaged including cellphone towers," Stifel Nicolaus analyst Christopher King said from his Verizon Wireless cellphone in Baltimore, Maryland.

"Particularly for Verizon, they're clearly going to have the most damage on the wireline side because it's pretty much all of their territory (where the storm hit)," King said.

Verizon said that its engineers were on site from the early hours and were still trying to assess the damage late morning on Tuesday. Outside of New York, the company warned that it was also having some trouble.

"Verizon is discovering that many poles and power lines/Verizon cables are down throughout the region due to heavy winds and falling trees," the company said in a statement.

Sprint Nextel , the No. 3 U.S. mobile provider said it was seeing outages at some cell sites because of the power outages across all the states in Sandy's path including New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Washington DC, Maryland, North Virginia and New England.

"(Repair crews) have started on some critical areas but they haven't been able to get to everywhere they need to be," spokeswoman Crystal Davis said. She noted that 80 of the company's stores would reopen at noon. Sprint had closed about 180 stores ahead of the storm.

T-Mobile USA said that "customers may be experiencing service disruptions or an inability to access service in some areas, especially those that were hardest hit by the storm. "

People complained of outages to their cable telephone, Internet and television services from providers ranging from Comcast Corp , Cablevision Systems Corp and Verizon in New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York.

Cablevision said it was experiencing widespread service interruptions primarily related to loss of power. The company said it is working to restore services.

Comcast, whose headquarters is in Philadelphia and serves East Coast states, said it was still assessing the impact of the storm on its service.

Cellphone service also appeared to be spotty for other top wireless providers Verizon Wireless, AT&T Inc and T-Mobile USA, a unit of Deutsche Telekom , according to some customers. Verizon Wireless is a venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group.

AT&T said it was experiencing some issues in areas heavily affected by the storm. By Tuesday morning spokesman Mark Siegel said it was in the initial stages of on-the-ground assessment and expected "crews will be working around the clock to restore service."

Verizon Wireless said it was assessing the situation on Tuesday morning.

Several Time Warner Cable customers in Brooklyn said that their Internet, television and phone services stopped working Monday night but were back again by Tuesday morning.

Time Warner Cable said that while it has not seen any major damage to its infrastructure, its customers who do not have electricity do not have cable services.

Millions of people in the eastern United States awoke on Tuesday to flooded homes, fallen trees and widespread power outages caused by Sandy, which swamped New York City's subway system and submerged streets in Manhattan's financial district.

At least 15 people were reported killed in the United States by one of the biggest storms to ever hit the country. Sandy dropped just below hurricane status before making landfall on Monday night in New Jersey.

Toward a Modality of Jurisprudence - Marquette University Law School

The beginning of this month marked the 45th anniversary of Thurgood Marshall?s term as Associate Justice in the United States Supreme Court. Known for his championing of individual rights while on the bench and for, previously, successfully arguing against school segregation for the NAACP in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, 347 U.S. 483 (1954), Marshall was a trailblazer who spoke up for those who did not have a voice. His status as the first African American Supreme Court Justice represents the forging of a path for which there was no antecedent. Pushing off to smite the sounding furrows, into the tumult of a civilization brimming with intolerance is not unlike casting headlong into a polluted river.

In my posts this month I have tried to showcase guideposts in approaching jurisprudence. I submit that the perpetuation of injustice represents a failure of the imagination, the inability to conceive of a better option, a different path, a truer argument or equitable solution. The history of the law is the story of our strivings to envision and enact a more fair and just world. Pruning our minds toward this task takes practice and attention. We benefit from the example of individuals like Justice Thurgood Marshall.

Professor Ranney commented recently in his course on Wisconsin Legal History that the practice of law is often a solitary endeavor that can consist of many hours spent poring over books, or computer screens, alone and handling abstract concepts with pedantic diligence in a solitary fashion. By way of introduction to the development of the legal profession in Wisconsin, Ranney said that we might be able to take some solace in knowing that many others have partaken in this honorable task as well. I take this to mean that none of us are alone in our work because we follow in the footsteps of many others who came before us. We are taking up the work ? picking up where others have left off ? of approximating justice, a dream that began long ago and that will continue long after we are gone.

This I hope my mind to serve. Justice is extant; equality advances incrementally through the work of people. To do this well we must insist on mentors, whether they are living?or dead, real (pictured above) or symbolic.

Obviously there have also, necessarily, been lawyers on the wrong side of every issue that has defined our nation, some of whom have been quite talented. These models can also be instructive as reference points. It is our choice whose path we follow and whose we view as cautionary. These models guide us in our moments of trial, challenge, triumph, and disappointment, the times when we must dust ourselves off and turn again to the rain and the wind.

I leave you with a poem by Antonio Machado from 1912, translated by Willis Barnstone:

Walker, your footsteps

are the road, and nothing more.

Walker, there is no road,

the road is made by walking.

Walking you make the road,

and turning to look behind

you see the path you never

again will step upon.

Walker, there is no road,

only foam trails on the sea.

Energy markets rise on Sandy, insurers fall

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. gasoline and heating oil futures gained while U.S. Treasuries also rose on Monday, as economic worries over Hurricane Sandy fueled safe-haven buying in thin trading as the powerful storm began to batter the U.S. East Coast.

The storm closed Wall Street on the anniversary of the 1929 stock market crash. It was the stock market's first weather-related closure in 27 years, and other markets closed early as investors braced for the impact of Sandy, one of the biggest storms ever to slam the U.S. eastern seaboard.

U.S. stock and bond markets will be closed on Tuesday, but the two-largest U.S. stock exchange operators, NYSE Euronext and Nasdaq OMX Group , intend to reopen Wednesday, conditions permitting.

Trading was thin in U.S. foreign exchange, fixed income, precious metals and energy markets as public transportation was shut in New York and parts of lower Manhattan were evacuated.

"You have uncertainties now. You have these safe haven purchases. People are trying to figure out the economic impact from the storm," said Larry Milstein, head of government and agency trading at R.W. Pressprich & Co in New York.

"Right now it's the easy way to buy Treasuries and wait to see what happens," Milstein said.

Benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury notes traded 8/32 higher in price to yield 1.7206 percent.

U.S. heating oil futures gained, touching the highest level relative to U.S. crude oil on record, as dealers hedged against the risk of power outages and flooding from Sandy that could damage refineries and keep production shut for weeks.

The crack spread, the difference in value between a barrel heating oil and a barrel of crude oil, touched $45.15 a barrel.

"Markets will be watching for reports of damage to energy infrastructure, notably refineries, post-Sandy, given the state of extremely low gasoil inventories as we move into winter season," Deutsche Bank analysts said.

Gasoline futures reached $2.8115 a gallon, the highest since October 17, before paring gains as traders factored in the reduced demand for fuel with the almost total shut-down of eastern seaboard roads and airports.

In Europe stocks, led by insurers, fell on expectations Sandy-related damage will boost claims, while political jitters in debt-laden Italy cast shadows on the euro zone.

Reinsurers Swiss Re and Hannover RE led a weaker European insurance sector <.sxip> index as the market tried to foresee the clean-up costs of Sandy.

"We are seeing insurers slide and we've sold a bit of Aviva and RSA ," said Ed Woolfitt, head of trading at Galvan Research.

Euro zone blue chips <.stoxx50e> shed 0.7 percent to 2,478.84 points after former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi threatened to bring down the government of his successor, Mario Monti, which has appeased markets with its austerity agenda.

The broader MSCI world equity index <.miwd00000pus> lost 0.26 percent to 327.74 points - on track for its worst monthly performance since May as doubts grow over the effect of the latest round of central bank efforts to boost activity.

The euro fell against the dollar and yen, hurt by uncertainty over whether Greece can agree to a deal on austerity and with no sign of when Spain might request aid.

The single currency was expected to stay subdued against the dollar and the yen, with investors preferring safe-haven currencies on renewed worries about weak earnings from top companies in the region.

The single currency was down 0.3 percent at $1.2898, not far from a two-week low of $1.2881.

The dollar rose to a session high against the yen ahead of a Bank of Japan policy review on Tuesday at which the central bank is expected to further ease monetary policy.

The dollar was last up 0.2 percent at 79.80, the session peak.

U.S. consumer spending rose solidly in September, putting the economy on a firmer footing heading into the fourth quarter even though households had to pull back on saving to fund purchases.

But the rise in consumer spending will mask a pullback late in the year as businesses hold investments in anticipation of higher taxes and cuts in federal spending that will kick in beginning early next year if Congress doesn't act, said Ellen Zentner, senior U.S. economist at Nomura Securities in New York.

Positive surprises, including third-quarter U.S. growth data and signs of stabilization in China, have failed to persuade investors that the world economy can achieve lasting growth as multinational global companies have forecast weak revenues.

Study finds diabetes raises levels of proteins linked to Alzheimer's features

Saturday, October 27, 2012

Growing evidence suggests that there may be a link between diabetes and Alzheimer's disease, but the physiological mechanisms by which diabetes impacts brain function and cognition are not fully understood. In a new study published in Aging Cell, researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies show, for the first time, that diabetes enhances the development of aging features that may underlie early pathological events in Alzheimer's.

Specifically, the Salk team found increases in two hallmarks of Alzheimer's-accumulations of amyloid beta (Abeta) and tau protein-in the brains of diabetic mice, especially in cells surrounding blood vessels. Abeta, the misfolded peptide that is thought in part to cause Alzheimer's disease, aggregated inside astrocytes, star-shaped brain cells that, upon interaction with Abeta, release inflammatory molecules that can destroy neurons. Previously, this had not been shown in mouse models of type 1 diabetes (T1D).

"Our study supports and extends the links between diabetes, aging and Alzheimer's," says senior author Pamela Maher, a senior staff scientist in Salk's Laboratory of Cellular Neurobiology. "We show that type 1 diabetes increases vascular-associated amyloid beta buildup in the brain and causes accelerated brain aging."

The findings suggest that the neurovascular system may be a good candidate for new therapeutic targets to treat Alzheimer's in the early stages of the disease.

Alzheimer's and diabetes are two diseases that are increasing at an alarming rate within the U.S. population. Alzheimer's affects one in 10 Americans over 65 years of age and nearly 50 percent of those over 85. Similarly, more than 8 percent of Americans (approximately 26 million people) have diabetes, with the vast majority of those individuals being over 60.

Maher says her team is uncertain of the precise mechanism behind the increase in Abeta and tau in the mouse brain, but their data suggest that changes in astrocytes, as well as other pro-inflammatory processes and the bonding of proteins with sugar molecules (called non-enzymatic glycation), may contribute.

"Astrocytes play a key role in maintaining nerve cells in the brain," says lead study author Antonio Currais, a postdoctoral researcher at Salk. "Both chronic peripheral inflammation and increased non-enzymatic glycation are associated with diabetes, and these changes may act on the brain to alter astrocyte function, which eventually leads to Alzheimer's-like changes."

All nerve cells are closely connected to blood vessels, as they need nutrients---- especially glucose (sugar) and oxygen---- provided by the blood in order to function. Astrocytes facilitate the transfer of nutrients between blood vessels and cells. The buildup of Abeta at sites where astrocytes interact with blood vessels suggest that this could impair the transfer of nutrients. The type of Abeta localization seen in Maher's mouse models is also found in human Alzheimer's patients

To examine the contributions of diabetes to Alzheimer's-related pathology in the aged brain, the Salk researchers induced T1D in two sets of mouse models. One set, known as SAMP8 mice, undergo accelerated aging and develop early deterioration in learning and memory, as well as a number of brain alterations similar to those found in Alzheimer's. The other set, SAMR1 mice, which in this study came from the same gene pool as the SAMP8 mice, age normally.

Using these mice, Maher and her colleagues addressed how T1D interacts with age to contribute to Alzheimer's-related pathology. They showed that T1D elicits a wide range of pathological changes in the brains of both strains of mice, which are exacerbated by premature aging.

The Salk study is the first to show that these modifications are similar to those seen in old nondiabetic SAMP8 mice and to identify unique pathological changes, such as increases in markers for inflammation, in aged, T1D SAMP8 mice. Unlike most mouse studies of Alzheimer's, Maher's mice were not engineered to produce high levels of human Abeta or tau,so all of their observations came from naturally occurringAbeta and tau.

Russian Military Chief: US supplying anti-aircraft missiles to Syrian ...

?The General Staff has information that the militants, who are fighting against Syrian government troops, are armed with the portable air defence systems of various countries, including the Stinger of U.S. production,? he underlined.

Commenting on some media reports that the Obama administration gave instructions to pass on a batch of the portable air defence systems to the formations of the unappeasable Syrian opposition, Makarov said, ?The US denies this fact, they say that they did not deliver anything to them (Syrian militants). However, we have reliable information that Syrian militants are armed with foreign portable air defence systems, including U.S. air defence systems.

?It is necessary to find out who supplied it to them,? the chief of the Russian General Staff said. ?For this purpose all types of transport can be used, including civil airlines,? he said.

On October 17, a Syrian source stated that the U.S. allegedly decided to pass to Syrian militants a batch of portable air defence systems. ?President Barack Obama, who was speaking not quite well at the first round of the debates compared to his rival Mitt Romney, prepared a ?strong? card. He gave instructions to pass the air defence systems to formations of the unappeasable Syrian opposition,? he told journalists.

However, the U.S. did not confirm the reliability of this information. Spokesperson of the U.S. State Department Victoria Nuland stated on October 18 that she cannot confirm anything like that.

Under the OSCE Strategy to Address Threats to Security and Stability in the twenty-first century approved in Maastricht in 2003 the organization uses all available instruments for counteracting the proliferation of the air defence systems.

According to the decision taken at the OSCE forum for security cooperation number 3/04 in May 2004 and approved by the OSCE Council of Ministers at the end of the same year, the OSCE states, including the U.S., that it is committed to contribute to the use of efficient and comprehensive mechanisms for the export control of portable air defence systems. In particular, the export supplies of the portable air defence systems only to the governments of other countries or the agents, which are empowered concretely to act on behalf of the government, are permitted. The violation of the principles of the decision comes under the effect of penalty sanctions, including those related to criminal persecution.

Syrian rebel fighters armed with foreign-made MANPADs ? General

Syrian rebel fighters are armed with foreign-made man-portable surface-to-air missiles (MANPADs), including US Stinger missiles.

This came in a statement at a news briefing by the Chief of the Russian General Staff, Nikolai Makarov, earlier today.

According to him, arms can be delivered to the Syrian opposition by air, including via civilian airlines.

An informed Syrian source said on October 17 that the US had made a decision to hand over a consignment of MANPADs to the militant that are fighting against Damascus.

But the US has since failed to confirm the veracity of information.

Medical web expansion: Healthynewage diversifies to meet WebMd

Sites include healthynewage.com , WebMD.com . Published on October 26th, 2012. Written by SiteTrail.

The web has seen disproportionate levels of expansion where technology and medicine converge. WebMd.com was seen in recent months to diversify it?s strategy and are now offering channels ranging from medical education to specialist doctor and dentist listings but also advice on health insurance and more. It is also now a favourite junction for people seeking advice on all sorts of medical conditions ranging from asthma, blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, mrsa, pregnancy and pretty much anything one could imagine.

Healthynewage.com announced a diversification strategy that would see the service change from an alternative health portal to incorporate more mainstream health, fitness and medical channels. It already has a strong presence in the USA, Canada, Australia, UK and other parts of the world, in particular where English is the first language. It is predicted that Healthynewage.com will spend the next 12 months implementing it?s diversification strategy after which this is likely to become a hot stock in the financial sector. Users can think of this as a re-launch as it has been in the market at least since 1999 and has a strong following also due to it?s sounds true store affiliation.

Now that health apps are setting a new trend, and with the competition being strong amongst tablet producers for their respective share of the market, we will see the iPad Mini, iPad4, Samsung tablets and others being used increasingly more as tools also in health, fitness and medicine. With windows 8 on the market, it is more important than ever to provide health apps which can be accessible through the latest platforms and technology.

We predict that WebMD, Healthynewage and others will probably initiate a big drive to be a part of the health app market as the link between technology and health becomes more tight.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Did Minnie Mouse do a catwalk cleanse?

For a brief moment in Barneys New York's upcoming holiday window display, Minnie becomes a long, lean high-fashion model ? and the skinny Minnie is drawing some criticism.

The Barneys display puts Disney characters on the runway in front of animated versions of industry bigwigs in a short film that features Minnie's daydream sequence strutting her stuff in Paris in a hot-pink, ruffle-covered Lanvin dress.

Runway Minnie gets only a few seconds of face time, but when she does, she transforms into a model who is tall and thin with longer legs, leaner arms and daintier gloved hands than the polkadot-loving character who typically embraces her curves from head to toe. Daisy Duck, Cruella De Vil and Goofy get similar insta-slim treatments.

For most of the film, however, Minnie and crew look their usual selves. Minnie has her big bows, round face and signature wide-width pumps.

"Viewers will recognize the Minnie they know and love, as she takes a turn on the runways of Paris and in her own mirror, wearing a custom creation from one of the world's greatest designers," Barneys said in a statement to The Associated Press. "Some of the early highly stylized fashion illustrations have garnered significant attention, however the reality is Disney's Minnie Mouse proves that true fashion lovers come in all styles and sizes."

Still, the makeover has prompted several online petitions targeting Barneys and Disney for perpetuating the skinny-model image that the fashion industry has been criticized for many times over.

One of the louder voices is Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman, executive director and founder of SumofUs.org, a consumer watchdog group. In just over a week, the SumofUs.org petition has attracted close to 80,000 online "signatures." There are a half-dozen additional petitions up on Change.org, including one with more than 135,000 supporters. It was launched by Ragen Chastain, who self-published the book "Fat: The Owners Manual ? Navigating a Thin-Obsessed World with Your Health, Happiness and a Sense of Humor Intact."

Stinebrickner-Kauffman said she took this issue on after a friend of hers ? a mother to a grade-school daughter ? posted about it on Facebook. "Girls have seen Minnie Mouse as a healthy character in their lives ... to have her image subverted like that is troubling."

Girls are "bombarded" by impossible physical figures in the media, says Stinebrickner-Kauffmann, and to have such a familiar face ? and shape ? be turned into such a skinny Minnie seems like it could fuel the insecurities young women often have about themselves and their bodies.

Models are indeed taller and thinner than most women, and those features are further exaggerated in fashion illustrations used by designers ? and by Barneys in its promotional material for the Nov. 14 launch of its displays, says Steven Stipelman, assistant chair of fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Those are the images that are being protested, as the film short has not been released beyond the trailer provided to The Associated Press. The film does not feature the drawing that has been the focus of criticism, though Minnie does undergo a transformation as soon as she steps onto the catwalk in front of Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz, International Herald Tribune reporter Suzy Menkes and Harper's Bazaar global fashion director Carine Roitfeld, among other recognizable faces. Runway Minnie even masters the straight-ahead stare and bouncy strut that real-life models aim to master.

She then comes quickly back to reality and her everyday appearance, and the film ends with her just as happy as herself window-shopping on Madison Avenue as she was in Paris.

"Fashion drawing is a fantasy," said Stipelman, who teaches illustration. "They are conveying a mood, a feeling and attitude. It's supposed to make you feel like you want the attitude of this person, not like you're going on a diet so you can look like this person."

He adds, "It looks exaggerated because you know what you're comparing it to. If you didn't know what Minnie looked like, you probably wouldn't even notice."

The Oak Leaf : Local Director and Filmmaker Presents New Film at ...

Anna Hecht, Contributing Writer
October 25, 2012

Revelations were abuzz during the screening of the film Connected: An Autoblogography about Love, Death, and Technology at the Santa Rosa Junior College Petaluma campus Oct. 22.

The director and filmmaker Tiffany Shlain, presented her 60-minute film to a medium sized group of both students and instructors in the Carole L. Ellis Auditorium and participated in a question and answer session following the film.

The film covered topics ranging from the Big Bang Theory and the alphabet to chain reactions of events and society?s interdependence on technology; plus the incorporation of the life and death of Shlain?s father into all of these topics.

Shlain is founder of the Webby Awards and co-founder of the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences.

Her films have received 50 awards and include Life, Liberty & The Pursuit of Happiness and The Tribe, which explores American Jewish identity through the history of the Barbie doll. Connected is Shlain?s eighth film.

Following the screening of Connected, Shlain was given a round of applause by the enthused audience.

Shlain proceeded to answer questions from the audience while starting a discussion about the four-year production of her film.

?At the time, my father was dying and?All I could think about was my dad and losing connection with him. So I was sitting in the editing room thinking that I?m making a film about connectedness and I?m not exploring emotional connection. So then it took another two years to weave that in,? she said.

Shlain also spoke about the breaks from technology she and her family routinely take.

?Every Friday night, we light the candles and we turn off every screen in the house for 24 hours. You should all try it. It?s really been this huge shift in my life. And then by Saturday afternoon we?re back online and we re-appreciate technology in a whole other way,? Shlain said.

Technology and connectedness were second nature to Shlain when she was growing up and she believes it is now the same for everyone, saying, ?It is us. We?ve created these tools. These are extensions of us?We wanted to connect so we invented these computers. We are technology.?

To see more about how the brain is connected to technology, Shlain recommended her latest film, Brain Power: From Synapses to Hyperlinks.

Brain Power is both a 10-minute film and a TED book. The film will be shown Nov. 8 at The California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.

Cowboys lose leading tackler Lee to toe injury

(AP) ? Linebacker Sean Lee, the leading tackler for the Dallas Cowboys, has been placed on injured reserve and will miss the rest of the season because of a right big toe injury.

Coach Jason Garrett said Wednesday an MRI showed ligament damage that will require surgery in the next week or so, ending hopes of Lee returning in four to six weeks.

Lee also calls the defensive signals for the Cowboys. The Cowboys have signed veteran linebacker Ernie Sims, who played 13 games last year for Indianapolis.

Dan Connor, a free agent addition in the offseason, took most of Lee's playing time in the second half of last week's 19-14 win at Carolina. Connor is listed as a starter alongside Bruce Carter in the middle of the Dallas defense, with Sims backing up Connor.

Garrett said he expects Lee's leadership role to shift from the field to the sideline when the New York Giants visit Sunday.

"I can't tell you how well he's been playing since he's been our starting inside linebacker," Garrett said. "He's a bell cow for us and a guy that really everybody on our defense and football team looks up to."

Lee missed a game and a half last year with a dislocated wrist and played several games in a cast.

The Cowboys moved up in the draft to take Lee in the second round out of Penn State in 2010. He started 15 games last year, finishing with 105 tackles and tying for the team lead with four interceptions. He had 58 tackles in six games this year and another interception.

"A lot of teams around this league have had significant injuries to significant players," Garrett said. "This is not new. This has happened a lot. And you rally around it."

Dallas also put punter Chris Jones on injured reserve and signed safety Charlie Peprah. The Cowboys added linebacker Jerry Brown to the practice squad a week after he was let go by Indianapolis.

ASUS VivoTab RT tablet arrives October 26th, starting at $599 for the 32GB model; keyboard dock included

ASUS VivoTab RT tablet arrives October 26th, starting at $599 for the 32GB model keyboard dock included

In case you haven't heard, a lot -- and we mean a lot -- of Windows devices are going on sale this week. Today it's ASUS' turn to give its lineup a formal coming-out party: the company is hosting a press event here in New York City, where it just announced the dockable VivoTab RT will be available on October 26th, starting at $599 for the 32GB model, keyboard included. Alternatively, you can buy the 64GB tablet and docking station for $699. As we previously reported, an LTE version is coming to AT&T. Finally, ASUS says it will also sell the tablet and dock individually, but we haven't yet learned final pricing for those items. We'll update this post when we do.

If this is your first introduction to the VivoTab RT, here's a quick recap: it basically offers everything people loved about ASUS' Android-based Transformer tablets, except it runs Windows RT instead. Like the Infinity and other recent ASUS tablets, it has a 600-nit Super IPS+ display, offering 178 viewing angles and Gorilla Glass protection. Other specs include a quad-core Tegra 3 chip (the new T30, to be exact), 2GB of RAM, NFC and an 8-megapixel rear camera with an auto-focusing f/2.2 lens. Then there's that keyboard dock, which has a USB 2.0 port and built-in battery rated for seven hours. (The tablet itself is said to last up to nine hours.) Finally, of course, as a Windows RT device it comes loaded with all of the same stock applications you'll find in full Windows 8 (Mail, IE 10, etc.), along with Office 2013 Home & Student. The main difference: you won't be able to install legacy Windows programs.

The VivoTab RT arrives the same day as the Surface for Windows RT and indeed, we'll be eager to compare the two, especially since pricing for the keyboard-tablet bundles is identical. In fact, ASUS sent us one to test, and you can expect a review any day now. Until then, we've embedded some press photos below, in case you're just getting your first look.

Romibo therapeutic robot, eyes-on (video)

Image

Between old Paro the robo seal and the original iteration of Keepon, we've seen plenty of adorable robots designed for therapeutic purposes. Romibo's creators have no qualms admitting that their own creation is following in those cuddly footsteps, but what sets their furry 'bot apart from much of the competition is a focus on (relative) affordability. For starters, there's the fact that Romibo is being offered up as an open-source project online, letting do-it-yourselfers build their own versions and contribute custom designs.

The company's also hoping families will get into the act, making sure that Romibo is "able to be assembled by a neurotypical child 10+ and a parent" -- and then there are the plans to offer up workshops to let folks build robots to be donated to special needs facilities. Once built, Romibo can drive around, blink its eyes, speak and move its antennae. Crack it open and you'll find WiFi, bluetooth, light sensors, an IR Proximity sensor, accelerometers and a big 'ole Arduino Mega. There's a certain amount of autonomous functionality (watch in the video below as Romibo's handler warns about it driving off the edge of the table), or you can control the robot via an iPad app. You can also use an SD card to help teach it some new words.
