Woodward vs. Obama: Woodward Reveals Emails

Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward has shared with ABC News his email exchange with the White House official who told him he would "regret" his reporting on the sequester. That official was Gene Sperling, the director of President Obama's National Economic Council.

Woodward tells me that Sperling's words - "as a friend, I think you will regret staking out that claim" - was an implied threat because, Woodward says, the White House was not really disputing the facts.

"It's just not the way to operate," Woodward told me, saying Sperling's implied message was, "You challenge us, you will regret it."

Why did he respond to Sperling's email so politely? He was trying to keep open the lines of communication.

"They don't have to talk to anybody," Woodward said.

Julianne and Derek Hough to create new TV dance show

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Siblings Julianne and Derek Hough, both champions of the hit TV show "Dancing With the Stars," will develop a new series set in the world of international competitive ballroom dancing, the entertainment company Starz said on Tuesday.

The duo will produce and choreograph the series for the U.S. subscription TV network. The series will revolve around an annual competition in Blackpool, England.

"Their experiences growing up in this highly competitive world are riveting and also shocking," Carmi Zlotnik, Starz's managing director, said in a statement. "There is much more to uncover than what we see on the dance floor."

Derek Hough, the only three-time champion on "Dancing With the Stars," started dancing at age 11 in his hometown of Salt Lake City, Utah. He performed in London's West End in the stage version of "Footloose," and was a choreographer on the BBC hit show, "Dance X."

"Viewers are going to see a twisted, sexy, funny, dark and passionate side of the drama and politics in the world of ballroom dance that delves deeper than spray tans and sequins," he said in a statement.

His sister, Julianne, stars opposite Josh Duhamel in the film, "Safe Haven," based on a Nicholas Sparks' novel," and will be seen next in "Paradise," with Russell Brand and Octavia Spencer.

Fraternity raises money for member?s sexual reassignment surgery

Emerson College's Phi Alpha Tau fraternity has raised more than $17,000 for a member seeking to undergo gender reassignment surgery.

Donnie Collins, 20, is seeking to transition from female to male. After his request to have the "top half" procedure covered by his health plan was denied, his fraternity brothers launched a fundraising campaign on IndieGoGo. Collins has posted a video (above) thanking all those who have donated.

Initially, according to NBC News, the goal was to raise $4,800?enough to surgically remove Collins' breasts. The fraternity has said that it will donate any excess funds to the Jim Collins Foundation, which raises money to help pay for "gender-confirming surgeries for transgender people." Rebekah Spicuglia of the Jim Collins Foundation explained that there is no family relation between Donnie and the late Jim Collins.

Donnie Collins has said that his life has been transformed by his time with his fraternity brothers. In a YouTube clip uploaded by the fraternity, Collins said, "It's been an amazing experience, these last few weeks. My life has been absolutely changed by pledging this fraternity."

Fraternity member Chuck Bergen-Aragon is one of the men who helped start the fundraising. He told BostInno that this is a "prime example of supporting brothers, and that?s what frats are about."

RateHub.ca's Fancy New Mortgage Refinance Centre

kangaroo

While Mark is off chasing kangaroos in Australia, his friends are covertly taking over his blog. (Confession: He actually asked us if we would update his readers while he was away and, being the nice guy that he is, we were happy to oblige.)

So, we ? we, as in RateHub.ca ? decided to take this opportunity to introduce something we have been working on over the last few months: our Mortgage Refinance Centre. We have been keeping it under wraps, but it?s finally ready for a proper introduction. And it couldn?t come at a more appropriate time for Canadians: following the holiday season, the amount of high interest debt from credit cards and the like warrants an investigation into refinancing at a low mortgage rate.

What makes our Refinance Centre so special?

We don?t want to brag but our Refinance Centre is pretty remarkable. Whether you are looking to refinance so you can switch to a lower mortgage rate, consolidate your debts, or access your home equity, we have refinance calculators and descriptive narratives to take you through every scenario. We?ve compiled historical mortgage rate data to give you well-informed estimates of the penalties to break your mortgage with each lender, which then allows you to compare those fees to the savings you could accrue with a new mortgage rate and term.

You can easily investigate whether it makes financial sense to switch to the historically low mortgage rates available today, or to consolidate any high interest debts to one lower mortgage rate, with our detailed and comprehensive overview of your refinance options. (Don?t believe us? Check out how simply everything is laid out in some of the screenshots below.)

Some people never think about refinancing their mortgages. But considering 38% of mortgage holders in Canada did consider refinancing in 2011, you would be in good company.[1] With that, we invite you to mosey on over to our site and test out our new tools. You may be pleasantly surprised at the savings you could claim!

NASA Spacecraft Discovers Particle Accelerator at Saturn

NASA's Cassini spacecraft has spotted solar particles moving at incredible speeds near Saturn, giving scientists a rare up-close look at phenomena that occur during dramatic star explosions.

The particles flowed from the sun during a strong blast of solar wind, then plowed into Saturn's magnetic field shortly thereafter. This encounter, which Cassini observed in February 2007, created a shockwave that accelerated the particles to super-high energies, scientists said.

Similar shockwaves commonly form in the aftermath of massive star explosions called supernovas, ramping up nearby particles to nearly the speed of light. Researchers think supernova shockwaves are the primary source of cosmic rays, high-energy particles that pervade our Milky Way galaxy and slam into Earth's atmosphere continuously.

It can be tough to study distant supernovas and their shockwaves, so Cassini's observations provide a welcome proxy, scientists said.

"Cassini has essentially given us the capability of studying the nature of a supernova shock in situ in our own solar system, bridging the gap to distant high-energy astrophysical phenomena that are usually only studied remotely," Adam Masters, of the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Sagamihara, Japan, said in a statement.

Masters is lead author of a study reporting the Cassini findings, which was published this week in the journal Nature Physics.

The Saturn shockwave may be the most powerful ever detected at the ringed planet and suggests that certain kinds of shocks can be surprisingly efficient particle accelerators, researchers said.

The $3.2 billion Cassini mission is a joint effort of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. Cassini launched in 1997 and arrived at the Saturn system in 2004, delivering a lander called Huygens to the planet's huge moon Titan in January 2005.

Cassini will continue studying the ringed planet and its many moons for several years to come; Cassini's mission has been extended through at least 2017.

Study: Boozy Brits underestimate their drinking

(AP) ? Truth and alcohol may not mix, particularly when people are asked how much they drink.

That's the implication of a study released Wednesday that reveals a big gap between the booze Britons own up to drinking and the amount of alcohol sold nationwide. The study indicates that people routinely underestimate their alcohol consumption by around 40 percent.

That may not be particularly surprising, but the study puts a figure to the phenomenon of the drunk who claims not to have anything more than a couple of beers. Lead author Sadie Boniface said the unreported alcohol equates to nearly one bottle of wine per British adult per week ? an amount she said wasn't just disappearing.

"It has to have gone somewhere," she said in a telephone interview.

Boniface and Nicola Shelton, both with the University College London's Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, derived their figures by comparing self-reported data in a public health survey accounting for 14,041 people aged 16 and up to alcohol sales figures kept by British tax authorities.

The gap was huge. More than 20 percent of Britons' annual wine consumption ? or 2.6 million hectoliters ? was unaccounted for. Nearly half of Britons' beer consumption ? 45 million hectoliters ? was unclaimed. And Britons seemed particularly reluctant to take credit for gulping down whiskey, vodka, tequila and gin. Nearly 60 percent of Britain's spirit consumption remained unreported.

Boniface said the more accurate reporting of wine versus beer and spirits might have something to do with the cultural baggage attached to them.

"If you think about drinking wine, you generally think of sitting around a fancy meal," she said. "It's thought of as much more of a civilized drinking occasion than drinking spirits might be, although that's just speculation."

The study, published in the European Journal of Public Health, considered a host of other possible reasons for the underreporting. Maybe children under the age of 16, tourists or homeless people ? all groups which wouldn't have been covered by the survey ? were buying the unclaimed booze. Maybe the whiskey was being kept on shelves rather than being sipped after dinner. Maybe the wine was being used in cooking, or thrown out when it expired, or being spilled across white carpets.

Boniface said those factors were all considered and then ruled out.

"It can't be a small minority ? such as homeless people ? that are drinking vast, vast amounts," she said. "It's a widespread problem."

Issues around self-reporting aren't new ? people routinely overestimate their height or underestimate their weight, for example. And it's long been known that alcohol intake is particularly liable to be underreported; Boniface said that many doctors mentally double the alcohol intake given to them by their patients.

But Boniface said the study fleshed out an issue which is particularly salient in the context of Britain's struggle to control a surge in boozing which has seen Britain's annual alcohol-related death toll more than double between 1992 and 2008. If authorities don't know how much Britons are drinking, she said, then how can they get a handle on the situation?

Underreporting has "huge consequences for public health," she said, "and we don't have any idea what they are."

Italy's Berlusconi: ignore the 'crazy' markets

(AP) ? Italy's post-election political paralysis is spooking financial markets. But former Premier Silvio Berlusconi, whose strong showing defied pro-Europe pundits who thought he was politically finished, insists a government can be formed.

The conservative leader said Tuesday that Italians should ignore the "crazy" markets. His center-left rivals won Parliament's lower house after votes were counted Monday. But they failed to win an absolute majority in the upper house.

Pro-Europe leaders, who were hoping Italy would stay the course of tough economic reforms, are rattled by the prospects of legislative gridlock. Berlusconi says having another election soon won't solve problems, and called on fellow leaders to "make some sacrifices," an apparent call for a coalition government.

Spencer Green, File)

(AP) ? The primary contest to replace disgraced former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson was in the hands of Chicago-area voters Tuesday, just three months after his resignation and an intense period of campaigning by more than a dozen candidates.

The front-runners ? former state Rep. Robin Kelly, former U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson and Chicago Alderman Anthony Beale ? planned Election Day stops at train stations and restaurants in the district that spans Chicago's South Side, south suburbs and some rural areas. They were among 14 Democrats and four Republicans in the special primary, but the Democratic winner was expected to sail through the April 9 general election because of the heavily Democratic region.

Beale planned to vote at a school in Chicago, Halvorson was set to cast a ballot at a suburban community center and Kelly voted early.

Voters haven't seen an open primary since 1995, when Jackson first won office.

Turnout at the polls was expected to be low, and candidates and election officials braced for a possible winter storm that could dump up to six inches of snow on the region and complicate Tuesday's logistics. Election officials said they were in communication with streets and sanitation workers about making sure pathways to polls were kept clear.

In Chicago, fewer than 2,800 voters, or roughly 2 percent or registered voters in the district, cast early ballots. In suburban Cook County ? the bulk of the district's voting population ? it was nearly 2 percent. The last time the Chicago area had a special primary election for Congress was 2009 after Rahm Emanuel left his seat to take a job as White House chief of staff. Roughly 18 percent of registered voters in the district spanning North Side neighborhoods voted. In suburban Cook County, the percentage was far lower.

Guns and ethics were on the minds of voters, and both were main issues on the campaign trail, particularly as Jackson's legal saga played out in federal court. He pleaded guilty to illegally spending $750,000 in campaign money on personal items and faces prison time. The son of the civil rights leader is the third consecutive congressman from the district to leave office under an ethical or legal cloud.

Still, gun control became the top issue on the campaign trail, including at candidate forums and television ads.

Independence USA, the super PAC of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, poured more than $2 million into the race for anti-gun ads in support of Kelly and against Halvorson, a former state lawmaker and one-term congresswoman. Kelly supports a ban, but Halvorson does not.

"Gun control, we need it," said retiree Angela Craig, an undecided Chicago voter. She had supported Jackson in the past but didn't feel like she got enough time to weigh the candidates.

Jackson resigned in November after a months-long medical leave. He pleaded guilty early this month to charges that he misspent $750,000 in campaign money on lavish personal items, including a Rolex watch and furs. His departure created a rare opening in the district.

Finchem says PGA Tour opposes ban on anchoring

MARANA, Ariz. (AP) ? PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem threw a big wrinkle into the plan to outlaw the anchored putting stroke when he said Sunday the tour opposed the ban because there was not enough evidence to suggest players had an advantage by using a long putter.

"We hold the USGA in highest regard as a key part of the game of golf," Finchem said. "We don't attempt to denigrate that position in any way whatsoever. It's just on this issue, we think if they were to move forward they would be making a mistake."

The U.S. Golf Association and the Royal & Ancient Golf Club announced Nov. 28 a proposed rule that would prohibit players from anchoring the club to their body, the method used for belly putters and broom-handled putters that are pressed against the chest.

Three of the last five major champions used a belly putter.

The governing bodies are nearing the end of a 90-day comment period before deciding whether to adopt the rule, which would not take effect until 2016. Finchem has been meeting with his players the last few months, with USGA executive director Mike Davis presenting the rule to a player meeting in San Diego last week. Finchem sent a letter to the USGA and R&A on Friday to state the tour's position.

The PGA of America also opposes the ban.

"I think the essential thread that went through the thinking of the players ... was that in the absence of data or any basis to conclude that there is a competitive advantage to be gained by using anchoring, and given the amount of time that anchoring has been in the game, that there is no overriding reason to go down that road," Finchem said.

The long putter has become a polarizing issue in recent years, even though it has been around for the last four decades.

The USGA and R&A said they wanted to ban the anchored stroke because they felt it took too much skill out of the game. Its goal was to define the golf stroke as the club moving freely through the entire swing. They conceded in November there was no empirical data, only a recent spike in more players using long putters.

Finchem wanted to make clear that the PGA Tour was not in a "donnybrook" with the USGA over who sets the rules. Rather, he was responding to its request for comment. Even so, it puts the USGA in a position of going through with the ban or backing down because the PGA Tour opposes it.

Finchem has said over the last month that while slightly different rules for the PGA Tour are acceptable, he did not think anchoring would be one of them. And he did not indicate which direction the tour would go if the USGA followed through with the ban.

"I haven't spent much time worrying about that," Finchem said. "That would be speculation, and I haven't really thought about it. I've thought more about some areas of bifurcation, whether it would work or not. But I think that the focus here ought to be, if possible, to go down the same road, everybody go down the same road on anchoring, and that's certainly where we are right now.

"We just hope they take our view on it," he said. "We'll see."

The USGA issued a statement that it is listening to "many productive conversations across the golf community" on the proposed rule.

"As we consider the various perspectives on anchoring, it has always been our position that Rule 14-1b aims to clarify and preserve the traditional and essential nature of the golf stroke, which has helped to make golf a unique and enjoyable game of skill and challenge," the statement said.

The USGA said it would decide on the proposed rule in the spring.

The tour's opposition to the anchoring ban was not surprising. Finchem met with his 16-member Player Advisory Council and policy board last week, and several players had indicated that the tour would go against the USGA.

Where it leads is still up in the air.

Finchem said the lack of empirical data was a problem, along with the fact golf's governing bodies have allowed long putters over the last two generations of golf. He suggested that if the USGA had tried to ban the anchored stroke in 1975, not many would have protested.

"I think we could understand it if for some reason or another ... it had negative results for the game of golf," Finchem said. "We have to look at it from the standpoint of is it good, bad or indifferent for the game as a whole ? professional level, amateur level ? and we conclude that it's not (a bad thing)."

Foreign businessman slain in Mexican resort

A Belgian citizen shot to death in the Pacific resort of Acapulco near the site of the Mexican Open tennis tournament was a businessman, local prosecutors in Mexico said Sunday.

Saturday's killing was the second violent attack involving foreigners in Acapulco in less than three weeks. On Feb. 4, a band of masked gunmen invaded a beachfront home and raped six visiting Spanish women.

The Guerrero state district attorney's office identified the dead man as 59-year-old Jan Sarens, an executive with the family-owned Belgian firm Sarens, which supplies heavy transportation equipment for construction, mining and energy. It has offices in 50 countries, including Mexico.

Celia Gomez, an attorney for the firm's Mexico office, said it had not identified the body. Gomez said the company had a board member named Jans Sarens who lived in Mexico.

The man was shot to death Saturday afternoon in a shopping center parking lot, and his body was found outside a Mercedes Benz car with Mexico City plates.

Authorities in Guerrero state said in a statement that the killing was being investigated and the motive for the attack had still not been determined.

Violence and crime, much of it blamed on drug gangs, have grown worse in Acapulco in recent years.

Oscars have clear favorites, wild-card MacFarlane

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Some firsts and other rarities are possible at Sunday night's Academy Awards. But if the Oscars could be just a little less predictable, the show might really be one for the record books.

Ben Affleck's "Argo" looks like it will uniquely claim best picture without a directing nomination, while "Lincoln" filmmaker Steven Spielberg and star Daniel Day-Lewis are favored to join exclusive lists of three-time Oscar winners.

If some longshots came in, the night could produce two more three-time acting winners ? Sally Field from "Lincoln" and Robert De Niro for "Silver Linings Playbook."

We could also have the oldest or youngest acting winner ever ? 86-year-old "Amour" star Emmanuelle Riva and 9-year-old Quvenzhane (Kwa-VEHN-ja-nay) Wallis of "Beasts of the Southern Wild."

The ABC television broadcast itself could set some fresh highs or lows. Oscar overseers keep talking about pacing and trimming fat from a ceremony that's dragged on interminably, approaching four and a half hours one year. Can they keep it tight and lively enough that viewers don't think about gouging out their eyes around the three-hour mark?

And what about host Seth MacFarlane? He's a classy, low-key guy in person, with an old-fashioned Sinatra-style singing voice that he'll no doubt put to use in a show that's shaping up as a music-heavy, Broadway-style celebration of cinema.

Yet MacFarlane's career is built on pushing the envelope ? or crumpling it and tossing it in the trash ? as he's tested the boundaries of good taste with such brazen shows as his animated series "Family Guy" and last summer's obscenity-laden blockbuster "Ted," which earned him a songwriting Oscar nomination.

The result could be a fun night for younger, hipper TV audiences that Oscar organizers are courting but a crude awakening for traditionalists who like their Academy Awards to lean more toward the sacred than the profane. Or it could be that MacFarlane makes the most of the thankless task of shepherding the Oscars, striking a nice balance between respecting Hollywood and poking fun at it.

"I think a little bit of that injected into the mix will go a long way, but I do also have to be mindful, in this instance, of not losing the audience that's there every year," MacFarlane said. "It's a different audience from my own, but I do have to be respectful that they will be watching."

So maybe it's an Oscar show that's shaken, but not stirred up too much. That might suit one of the evening's special honorees, British super-spy James Bond, whose adventures will be the subject of a tribute to mark the 50th anniversary of his first big-screen outing in "Dr. No." Adele will perform her Oscar-nominated title tune to last year's Bond tale "Skyfall," while the show features Shirley Bassey, who sang the Bond theme songs for "Goldfinger," ''Diamonds Are Forever" and "Moonraker."

The show presents a salute to movie musicals of the last decade, with "Chicago" Oscar winner Catherine Zeta-Jones and "Dreamgirls" winner Jennifer Hudson joining "Les Miserables" cast members that include best-actor nominee Hugh Jackman, supporting-actress front-runner Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Helena Bonham Carter and Amanda Seyfried.

Oscar producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron have lined up a bubbly mix of young and old Hollywood as presenters, performers and special guests ? from Barbra Streisand, Michael Douglas and Jane Fonda to "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe, "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart, and Robert Downey Jr. and his superhero colleagues from "The Avengers."

Along with front-runners Day-Lewis as best actor for "Lincoln" and Hathaway as supporting actress for "Les Miserables," the other favorites are Jennifer Lawrence as best actress for "Silver Linings Playbook" and Tommy Lee Jones as supporting actor for "Lincoln."

Day-Lewis would be only the sixth performer to earn three or more Oscars and the first to win three times as best actor. "Lincoln" also could make Spielberg just the fourth filmmaker to win three or more directing trophies.

Affleck's thriller "Argo" is in line for best picture after winning practically every top prize at earlier honors. Hollywood was shocked that Affleck was snubbed for a directing nomination, possibly earning the film some sympathy votes, particularly from actors, who love it when one of their own succeeds behind the camera.

The story of how Hollywood, Canada and the CIA teamed up to rescue six Americans during the Iranian hostage crisis, "Argo" would become just the fourth film in 85 years to claim the top prize without a best-directing nomination and the first since 1989's "Driving Miss Daisy."

The best-picture prize typically ends the Oscar show, but this time, MacFarlane and Kristin Chenoweth will perform a closing number on the Dolby Theatre stage that producers Zadan and Meron called a "'can't miss' moment."

Keeping the wraps on whatever surprises they have in store has been a chore for them and MacFarlane.

"It's been difficult. The press, as you know, is very nosy and sneaky. They're always sniffing around trying to get any advance notice," MacFarlane said. "It's like (expletive) Christmas. Wait till Christmas morning. Don't spoil the surprise."

U.S. Justice, Gulf states crafting BP spill settlement

(Reuters) - The U.S. government and Gulf Coast states are considering offering BP Plc a deal under which it pays $16 billion to settle civil suits stemming from the deadly 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

The deal would cover the company's potential penalties under the Clean Water Act and payments under the Natural Resources Damage Assessment, the newspaper said, citing sources familiar with the discussions.

It was unclear if the deal has been formally offered to BP. The U.S. Justice Department declined to comment.

A settlement could avert a bruising courtroom battle over the worst ever U.S. offshore oil spill slated to start on Monday in New Orleans, although the trial may begin as the terms of the deal are hammered out.

A settlement would also put a solid number on BP's costs under the Clean Water Act, which range from $4.5 billion to $17.5 billion, as well as potential natural resources damage assessments to the states under the Oil Pollution Act.

"BP doesn't talk about possible offers or negotiations, but I can tell you we are ready for trial and looking forward to the opportunity to present our case starting Monday," BP spokesman Geoff Morrell said when contacted by Reuters.

BP has spent or committed $37 billion on cleanup, restoration, payouts, settlements and fines. That includes an estimated $8.5 billion deal with most plaintiffs and a record $4.5 billion in penalties, and a guilty plea to 14 criminal counts to resolve criminal charges from the Justice Department and civil claims from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

BP has said it would settle on "reasonable terms," but was prepared to go to trial if the demands were "excessive and not based on reality."

(AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI bestowed his final Sunday blessing of his pontificate on a cheering crowd in St. Peter's Square, explaining that his waning years and energy made him better suited to the life of private prayer he soon will spend in a secluded monastery than as leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

On Thursday evening, the 85-year-old German-born theologian will become the first pope to have resigned from the papacy in 600 years.

Sunday's noon appearance from his studio window overlooking the vast square was his next-to-last appointment with the public of his nearly eight-year papacy. Tens of thousands of faithful and other admirers have already asked the Vatican for a seat in the square for his last general audience Wednesday.

Perhaps emotionally buoyed by the warm welcome, thunderous applause and the many banners reading "Grazie" (Thanks) held up in the crowd estimated by police to number 100,000, Benedict looked relaxed and sounded energized, in sharp contrast to his apparent frailty and weariness of recent months.

In a strong and clear voice, Benedict told the pilgrims, tourists and Romans in the square that God had called him to dedicate himself "even more to prayer and meditation," which he will do in a monastery being renovated for him on the grounds behind Vatican City's ancient walls.

"But this doesn't mean abandoning the church," he said, as many in the crowd looked sad at his approaching departure. "On the contrary, if God asks me, this is because I can continue to serve it (the church) with the same dedication and the same love which I have tried to do so until now, but in a way more suitable to my age and to my strength."

The phrase "tried to" was the pope's adlibbed addition to his prepared text.

Benedict smiled in pleasure at the crowd after an aide parted the white curtain at his window and he gazed at the people packing the square, craning their head for a look at him. Giving greetings in several languages, he gratefully acknowledged what he said was an outpouring of "gratitude, affection and closeness in prayer" since he stunned the church and its 1.2 billion members on Feb. 11 with his decision to renounce his papacy and retreat into a world of contemplation.

"Prayer is not isolating oneself from the world and its contradictions," Benedict told the crowd. He said he had heard God's call to prayer, "which gives breath to our spiritual life" in a special way "at this moment of my life."

Heavy rain had been forecast for Rome, and some drizzle dampened the square earlier in the morning. But when Benedict appeared, to the peal of church bells as the clock struck noon, blue sky crept through the clouds.

"We thank God for the sun he has given us," the pope said.

Even as the cheering continued and shouts of "Long live the pope" went up in Italian and Spanish, the pontiff simply turned away from his window and stepped back down into the apartment, which he will leave Thursday, taking a helicopter to the Vatican summer residence in the hills outside Rome while he waits for the monastery to be ready.

A child in the crowd held up a sign on a yellow placard, written in Italian, "You are not alone, I'm with you."

No date has yet been set for the start of the conclave of cardinals, who will vote in secret to elect Benedict's successor.

"Now there will be two popes," said the Rev. Vilmar Pavesi, a Portuguese priest who was among the throngs in the square. "There will be the pope of Rome, the elected pope, and there will be the bishop emeritus of Rome, who will live the life of a monk inside the Vatican walls."

One Italian in the crowd seemed to be doing a little campaigning, hoisting a sign which mentioned the names of two Italian cardinals considered by observers to be potential contenders in the selection of the next pontiff.

Flags in the crowd represented many nations, with a large number from Brazil.

The cardinals in the conclave will have to decide whether it's time to look outside of Europe for a pope. The papacy was considered the realm of Italian prelates for centuries, until a Pole, John Paul II, was elected as pontiff in 1978, to be followed in 2005 by the German-born Benedict.

Crucially, Italian prelates have continued to run the behind-the-scenes machinery of the church's governance, and cardinals will likely be deciding what role the Italians might have played in a series of scandals clouding the central bureaucracy, including allegations of corruption and power-grabbing.

Benedict has not made any direct comment on details of the scandals.

In one of his last papal tweets, Benedict wrote Sunday in English: "In these momentous days, I ask you to pray for me and for the church, trusting as always in divine providence."

NFL combine: Can teams trust Manti Te'o?

INDIANAPOLIS -- The most anticipated and attended news conference in the 27-year history of the NFL scouting combine ended with a thank-you.

From Manti Te'o.

Yes, that's right, the Notre Dame linebacker/unwitting participant in a "Catfish" hoax thanked us, his family, his university and all of his supporters for helping him through this uniquely trying time. No hints of anger, bitterness, frustration or annoyance.

How can you not like a guy like that?

If Te'o wanted to convince the public that he's a sincere, grounded young man, he accomplished that objective during a 14 1/2-minute, no-holds-barred Q-and-A on Saturday with about 200 media members who staked out their spots as if positioning themselves for a rock concert (or a free meal).

This was Te'o's first group interview since the bizarre story of his virtual girlfriend came to light in mid-January, and he handled it with aplomb. Of course, the greater challenge is to convince NFL teams that he's the high-character person we all thought he was before Deadspin broke the story that shrouded Te'o in doubt.

"They want to be able to trust their player," Te'o acknowledged. "You don't want to invest in somebody you can't trust. ... I understand where they're coming from."

When he spoke to the media at 2:15 p.m. ET on Saturday, Te'o had met with two teams formally: Green Bay and Houston. He said he had 18 more interviews to go.

Other teams had met with him informally, and every single one had asked about the incident, as you'd expect. The amount of time spent on it varied.

Relatively speaking, what Te'o did -- falling victim to a hoax, then embellishing the story through the media -- was benign. He didn't commit any crimes. He didn't break any laws. He didn't disparage any groups of people.

(Shortly after Te'o spoke, Georgia linebacker Alec Ogletree appeared at the same podium. Maybe one-fourth as many reporters showed up to grill him about his arrest for DUI earlier this month.)

But Te'o's actions generated an unhealthy dose of skepticism among the people who matter most -- his potential employers.

San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh had said earlier in the week that he couldn't trust someone who wasn't truthful. Not that any other coach would cite Judge Judy as his inspiration, as Harbaugh did, but his sentiment was representative of the way the rest of the league's decision-makers feel.

"When you lie in Judge Judy's courtroom, it's over," Harbaugh said. "Your credibility is completely lost. You have no chance of winning that case. So I learned that from her. It's very powerful, and true. Because if somebody does lie to you, how can you ever trust anything they ever say after that?"

Harbaugh then was asked if that made Te'o undraftable. Harbaugh said it wouldn't, perhaps an indication that the incident won't affect Te'o's draft stock as much as some believe, if at all. (Of course, it's easy for Harbaugh to say -- the 49ers are set at inside linebacker.)

The bigger issue for NFL teams might be Te'o's poor performance in the BCS title game against Alabama. After a stellar season in which he was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, Te'o missed multiple tackles in Notre Dame's lopsided loss. He looked nothing like the first-round pick he was projected to be at the time.

Was Te'o distracted by his chaotic personal life, which few knew about at the time? Or did the Crimson Tide, loaded with NFL-bound players, expose him?

To his credit, Te'o made no excuses Saturday. "That's all on me," he said of his struggles against Alabama.

Unfortunately, the episode hasn't affected only Te'o. He said the toughest moment was receiving a phone call from his sister, who told him their family had to sneak into their house because so many reporters were camped outside. Te'o said he felt frustrated because he couldn't do anything to help them, embarrassed because he had besmirched the family name.

"You treasure your last name," Te'o said. "That's what you hold dear. To see your last name everywhere and know I represented my family and all my cousins and aunties and uncles ..."

Given his family's suffering, no one would blame Te'o if he sued Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the perpetrator of the hoax. But that's not Te'o.

"That's the worst thing you could do," he said. "Both families are going through chaos."

So what's Te'o's approach? To forgive.

"If you forgive," he said, "you'll get the majority of the blessings."

Te'o can only hope at least one NFL team sees it the same way.

NOTE

USC center Khaled Holmes (Mater Dei High) was unable to work out Saturday after injuring a pectoral muscle during the bench press Friday. However, Holmes said the injury was "just a strain" and that he would be fine. USC's pro day is March 27.
