A seminar on international artist, rights and music management has been held at the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Center of Excellence in ICT in Accra. The seminar was a collaborative effort between the Musicians Union of Ghana, MUSIGA and the British Council of Ghana.

The seminar had two major speakers in the persons of Stuart Worthington and Keith Harris. Seated with them on the High table were lawyer Mike Ocquaye and DJ Amess, a radio presenter and Artist Manager.

The seminar focused mainly on giving an overview, updating and helping participants to understand today?s music industry, general artist management where skills, roles and responsibilities of artists and managers were discussed. The various existing and new ways of making revenue in the music business as well as teamwork and 3^rd?party relationships were also discussed.

Stuart Worthington, a provider of management consultancy, small business information, advice and guidance, professional training & development services for a range of clients and strategic partners and who has worked in most sectors of the cultural & creative / arts & entertainment / media industries spoke about a number of issues affecting musicians, managers and the entire complex situation of handling and sharing monies amongst the various players in the industry.

He entreated that all involved in the business of music should endeavor to gain knowledge and understanding of how money flows so the managers, artists and other stakeholders will know about the financial situations and their entitlement.

There were various issues concerning music sharing, copyright issues and talent management. Keith Harris, Director of Performer Affairs at PPL commented that on the issue of royalty payments, the only way Ghanaian artists can claim their royalties from other countries is when we have good enough systems in place to claim the royalties of artists of other countries.

He also spoke about artists creating good enough images of them and limiting their accessibility to their audience once they hit a certain level. There was a question on when an artist needs a manager to which Keith responded that in a situation where an artist is doing all the work, the very moment the business side of managing the talent begins to interfere with the creativity, someone has to be brought in to handle certain things and this person has to be a manager.

The issues that were disseminated at the seminar were infused with personal and professional experiences of the various speakers. At a point, Lawyer Mike Ocquaye entreated musicians to be serious about registering their music.

Pullback possible after stocks reach milestone

NEW YORK -- After flirting with an all-time high for three weeks, the S&P 500 posted its best closing level in history. But strategists say Thursday's record could be a harbinger that the stock market rally is running out of steam.

The S&P traded within 10 points of the all-time closing high for 13 sessions before breaking through, showing that investors need new catalysts to push firmly above resistance levels.

"As the market has gone higher ... upward moves have generally gotten smaller, which suggests that the move is getting old and that we need a pullback," said Mark Arbeter, chief technical strategist for Standard & Poor's in New York.

Stocks could fall about 3 percent to 4 percent, he said.

The benchmark index has risen almost 10 percent so far this year, fueled by strong profit growth and accommodative monetary policy from the Federal Reserve. But those gains have slowed as investors fret over Cyprus's bailout and mixed signs about the economy.

Still, stocks have been resilient, lifting the S&P to its record close of 1,569.19 on Thursday. Investors stepped in on declines to buy and finally pushed the S&P above the previous record set on October 9, 2007.

The broad index is also within a stone's throw of its intraday record of 1,576.09. The Dow surpassed its record close on March 5 and set a series of records, ending Thursday at 14,578.54.

The S&P has risen for 11 of the past 13 weeks, up 0.4 percent over the past two weeks. In contrast, the CBOE Volatility index, a measure of investor anxiety, is up about 14.5 percent over the same period.

"The increase in volatility we've seen is far more likely to be the sign of a short-term top" than the trend of investors buying on dips, Arbeter said. "If that volatility persists, then you would need to worry about an intermediate top."

In addition, speculator positions show a preference for holding long positions. Mike O'Rourke, chief market strategist at Jones Trading, noted that long positions account for more than 65 percent of speculative positions in futures contracts, a point at which rallies can be overextended.

U.S. markets will be closed for the Good Friday holiday and reopen on Monday.

The stock market next week will face tests of the milestone it reached, with the situation of Cyprus's banks and a round of U.S. data, including the March jobs report on Friday, facing investors.

About 197,000 jobs were added in March, according to a Reuters poll of economists. That would be down from the 236,000 jobs created in the previous month but still suggest improvement in the labor market. The unemployment rate is seen holding steady at 7.7 percent.

A strong payroll report could spark caution if it raises questions about whether the Federal Reserve would be more inclined to reduce monetary stimulus more quickly.

"There will be those who fear that if things improve too dramatically, too quickly, the Fed will take its foot off the pedal of quantitative easing," said Kristina Hooper, head of portfolio strategies at Allianz Global Investors in New York.

So far, however, the Fed has not suggested a change in its stimulus measure is likely. If the central bank slows the rate of its monthly bond purchases, a program that has been credited with boosting equity prices, "that could cause some weakness," Hooper said.

Rex Macey, chief investment officer at Wilmington Trust in Atlanta Georgia, said a "Goldilocks report" was needed for markets to rally.

In the first quarter the S&P rose 10 percent. It gained 3.4 percent in March, the index's fifth straight monthly rise. The Dow was up 3.7 percent in March and more than 11 percent in the first quarter, while the Nasdaq composite index was up 3.2 percent in March and 8 percent in the quarter.

Cyprus will remain in focus after the government was forced to accept a stringent European Union rescue package to avert default. In a positive sign, there were no runs by depositors on banks after they reopened under tight controls on Thursday.

Macey, who helps manage about $20 billion in assets, compared the market's situation to the card game "Texas Hold 'Em" poker where players start out with cards they can see and don't see additional cards until after rounds of betting.

"Based on the cards we can see now, which are things like economic fundamentals, I think stocks are a fine place to be in the longer term," he said. "However, there are still cards we can't see, like what the resolution will be in Cyprus, that could cause trouble."

?I felt like a werewolf had bitten me and it was only a matter of time before the full moon rose,? said the victim, who had planned to kill himself and make it look like a mountaineering accident if he ever suffered dark intentions himself.

In a bizarre twist of fate, David moved to Colorado and was told by his unsuspecting mother that the rapist was now living in Denver with his wife and children, which sparked his deadly payback plot of stalking his suburban home and learning the man?s daily routine.

Holthouse intended to shoot his assailant below the waist, watch him ?writhe like a poisoned cockroach,? then kick him in the stomach and shoot him three times in the head ? believing that because he had never breathed a word about the rape, he would not be a suspect.

Ironically it would be David?s own childhood diaries that would bring the truth to light though, when in 2003 ? 10 days after he bought the gun ? his mother found his notebook detailing the assault and called him in tears. She then?sent an anonymous letter to the man?s parents, telling them their son was a molester and to keep him away from children, and cut off all future ties with the family.

The revelation caused the would-be revenge killer to call off his attack, and instead, a year later he sent two letters to his assailant asking:??Remember me?

?Simply ignoring this letter is not going to work,? he warned. ?If I don?t hear from you by Friday late afternoon, I?ll start calling your house, and then knocking on your front door.

?I want to be perfectly clear here: I am not threatening you with any physical harm, and I am not hinting at blackmail. I don?t want your blood or your money, just one uncomfortable conversation.?

Holthouse had already begun putting his story down on paper for publication in the?Denver Westword in May 2004, and two days before it was due to run, the man called and agreed to the confrontation.

?I?ve thought 100 times about contacting you in the last 20 years to tell you that, and I just never had the courage to pick up the phone,? the rapist said, according to his victim. ?I?m sorry for the pain I?ve caused you and my parents and your parents.?

He went on to claim that David?s rape was the one and only assault he had perpetrated, and that since then he had told his wife and parents the dark truth.

?I doubt that is true,? said a skeptical Holthouse.??He tried to repeat the crime against me for the next two years of my childhood. He would have assaulted me again, given the opportunity ? I believe that.

?I think as a society, we turn rapists into monsters and he had turned into a monster in my mind. Doing that is a risk because most rapists lead normal lives.?

Now the bogeyman has lost his evil power, the former abused child is married with his own two-year-old son and preparing to become a published playwright.

?I was expecting this sort of lightning-bolt catharsis,? he said. ?I thought I?d suddenly feel a lot better. That didn?t happen. Since then, I?ve realized that, at least for me, there?s no such thing as getting over it. All I can do is get better with it.?

North Korea puts rockets on standby as US official warns regime is no 'paper tiger'

The threats to the U.S. are becoming more strident as North Korea's leader, Kim Jung Un, says his rockets are ready to strike America at any time. But experts do not believe Pyongyang has the capabilities it claims.

North Korea put its rocket units on standby Friday to attack U.S. military bases in South Korea and the Pacific, after repeated threats and one day after two American stealth bombers flew over the Korean Peninsula in a military exercise.

A U.S. official warned that the isolated communist state is ?not a paper tiger? and its reaction should not be dismissed as ?pure bluster.?

According to the North Korea's official KCNA news agency, the country's leader Kim Jong Un ?judged the time has come to settle accounts with the U.S. imperialists in view of the prevailing situation? at a midnight meeting of top generals, Reuters reported.

The latest threat comes one day after?two nuclear-capable stealth bombers flew from Missouri?to drop inert munitions on a range in South Korea as part of a major military exercise.

Kim Jong Un, seen at what was described as an urgent meeting overnight, has ordered his rocket forces to be on standby to strike U.S. and South Korean targets at any time.

The U.S. official emphasized the danger posed by North Korea?s military and the unpredictable nature of its 30-year-old leader.

?North Korea is not a paper tiger so it wouldn't be smart to dismiss its provocative behavior as pure bluster. What's not clear right now is how much risk Kim Jong Un is willing to run to show the world and domestic elites that he's a tough guy,? said the official, who asked not to be named. ?His inexperience is certain -- his wisdom is still very much in question.?

There was a mass demonstration in support of Kim?involving tens of thousands of people?in the main square of North Korean capital Pyongyang Friday, The Associated Press reported.

Placards read "Let's crush the puppet traitor group" and "Let's rip the puppet traitors to death!"

'War for national liberation'
The state-controlled KCNA also published an article that said the ?opportunity for peacefully settling the DPRK-U.S. relations is no longer available as the U.S. opted for staking its fate. Consequently, there remains only the settlement of accounts by a physical means.? DPRK stands for Democratic People?s Republic of Korea, the North's official name.

North Korea routinely issues hostile statements but analysts have noted recent remarks have become more belligerent. In December, the North carried out a long-range rocket test and then detonated a nuclear bomb in a test earlier this year.

North Korea's young leader Kim Jong-un has issued almost daily threats, including the threat of nuclear strikes on Washington, D.C., and Seoul. In addition, Pyongyang has put its troops on combat readiness, warning that war "may break out at any moment." NBC's Ian Williams reports.

At a daily news briefing Friday, China?s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei said China was calling for an easing of tensions.

But some fear the situation could be getting out of control.

"It seems that Kim Jong Un is in the driving seat of a train that has been taken on a joyride," Lee Min-yong, an expert on North Korea at Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul, told Reuters.

Russia, meanwhile, appeared to criticize the U.S. over Thursday's bomber mission.

"We are concerned that alongside the adequate, collective reaction of the U.N. Security Council, unilateral action is being taken around North Korea that is increasing military activity," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters in Moscow, according to Reuters.

"The situation could simply get out of control; it is slipping toward the spiral of a vicious cycle," he said.

HTC EMEA President to join Nokia as head of European sales from June, HTC UK head Phil Blair to take over

Update: HTC has confirmed Seiche's exit, and says former VP of Product and Operations Phil Blair has taken over as its new EMEA head in addition to overseeing HTC's UK arm. We've got the company's official statement after the break.

Original story: Bloomberg is reporting that Florian Seiche, EMEA President at HTC, will be joining Nokia as head of European sales from June 15. Seiche, a familiar sight at European HTC press conferences, has been with the company since 2005, prior to which he served as Director of Devices at Orange. According to Bloomberg, Nokia's own EMEA head Shiv Shivakumar is leaving the company, to be replaced by its VP of smart devices for the Americas, Arto Nummela.

HTC and Nokia are in the midst of difficult times, as both are squeezed by fierce competition from Samsung and Apple. HTC in particular has seen dwindling sales and market share as a result to the meteoric rise of Samsung in the Android space. By comparison, Nokia recently returned to profitability, but its long-term fate is tied to that of Microsoft's Windows Phone OS.

The Universe is an old neighbourhood -- roughly 13.8 billion years old. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is also ancient -- some of its stars are more than 13 billion years old (eso0425). Nevertheless, there is still a lot of action: new objects form and others are destroyed. In this image, you can see some of the newcomers, the young stars forming the cluster NGC 2547.

But, how young are these cosmic youngsters really? Although their exact ages remain uncertain, astronomers estimate that NGC 2547's stars range from 20 to 35 million years old. That doesn't sound all that young, after all. However, our Sun is 4600 million years old and has not yet reached middle age. That means that if you imagine that the Sun as a 40 year-old person, the bright stars in the picture are three-month-old babies.

Most stars do not form in isolation, but in rich clusters with sizes ranging from several tens to several thousands of stars. While NGC 2547 contains many hot stars that glow bright blue, a telltale sign of their youth, you can also find one or two yellow or red stars which have already evolved to become red giants. Open star clusters like this usually only have comparatively short lives, of the order of several hundred million years, before they disintegrate as their component stars drift apart.

Clusters are key objects for astronomers studying how stars evolve through their lives. The members of a cluster were all born from the same material at about the same time, making it easier to determine the effects of other stellar properties.

The star cluster NGC 2547 lies in the southern constellation of Vela (The Sail), about 1500 light-years from Earth, and is bright enough to be easily seen using binoculars. It was discovered in 1751 by the French astronomer Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille during an astronomical expedition to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, using a tiny telescope of less than two centimetres aperture.

Between the bright stars in this picture you can see plenty of other objects, especially when zooming in. Many are fainter or more distant stars in the Milky Way, but some, appearing as fuzzy extended objects, are galaxies, located millions of light-years beyond the stars in the field of view.

Imagine you?re? clicking through the internet, stopped dead in your tracks when you come across hundreds of blogs and articles filled with comment after comment about a disturbing ad with your company?s branding all over it. An ad that you?ve never seen before, that you knew nothing about.

Sounds impossible, doesn?t it? Well just this week it happened to Ford. Employees out of JWT?s affiliate offices in India, whom Ford had contracted to do some of their ad work, created several unauthorized ads entirely on their own initiative. The same individuals uploaded the work to Ads of the World, to show off their work. They even went so far as to submit the mockups to India?s top ad awards program.

This brings up a major concern that a lot of companies have when working with an outside agency. How do you ensure the agency you are working with avoids serious mistakes that can severely impact your image? Open and frequent communication is key.

The following are ways to ensure your standards are being met when working with an outside agency:

1. Document your requirements- without a solid foundation it?s easy for both the business and agency to get off track and lose sight of the end goal
2. Create a review and signoff process- and communicate regularly, even if there are delays
3. Don?t be afraid to be strict about how agency employees are using your branding- remind them that they are responsible for your company?s big asset- your image

Instead of thinking of your agency as an outside vendor, treat them as a partner, stay in the loop and you?ll likely avoid any major fiascos like Ford did this week.

My name is Jenifer and this is the story of my high-risk pregnancy. ?I am currently pregnant with my eighth child (A BOY!!) and was diagnosed with Placenta Previa and Placenta Percreta. ?I also have Beta Thalassemia which contributes to severe anemia. ?While this has been a difficult pregnancy and we anticipate a difficult delivery, IT IS WORTH IT! ?

We NEVER regret our decision to get pregnant with this baby and are so grateful for this experience!!

?Accreta affects about 1 in 2500 pregnancies. ?(It is pretty rare!) ?If you have had previous uterine surgeries, your risk of Accreta increases to 1 in 500. ?I have had two previous c-section and one D&C, following a miscarriage. ?Although I was at risk, prior to being diagnosed with this condition, I never knew Placenta Accreta existed. ?

Would I have decided not to have another baby if I knew I had a greater risk of Accreta?? ?NO. ?To me, the gift of bringing a baby into the world outweighs the risk of something being wrong. ?For years I knew I had another little boy waiting to come to my family. ?This pregnancy is a gift, I believe LIFE is worth the risk. ?

I would however, have opted NOT to have a D&C for my miscarriage if I knew it would threaten my ability to have save pregnancies in the future. ?I would also NEVER choose a c-section for convenience-- my c-sections were both emergency. ?I am also glad that I found a doctor willing to deliver my last baby VBA2C. ?Vaginal deliveries are better and safer. ?(Abortions also greatly increase your risk of Accreta.) ?Surgery in your uterus DOES affect your ability to have healthy babies in the future. ?Mothers need to be made aware of this BEFORE we choose optional surgeries.

What is Accreta? ?Accreta is where your placenta attaches to your uterine wall instead of to the lining of your uterus. ?There are three different levels-- Accreta, Increta, and Percreta. ?Accreta is where your placenta is attached to the first layer of uterine wall, deeper than the lining-- often Accreta's can still deliver and save the uterus. ?Increta is where the placenta has grown into the muscle wall of the uterus-- this usually requires a c-section/hysterectomy. ?The rarest form of Accreta is Percreta where the placenta actually grows through the wall of the uterus and attaches to other organs in the?abdomen? ?Percreta?is very dangerous and will require a c-section and repair of other internal organs that are affected. ?Percreta?affects only 6% of all who have Accreta. ?Most commonly, Percreta involves the uterus which is in front of the uterus (anterior placenta). ?Sometimes Percreta?involves?the bowels with a posterior placenta. ?Rarely it involves the uterus, bladder, cervix and bowels... ?this is my condition.

Often, Placenta Previa and Accreta or?Percreta?go together. ?Placenta Previa means your placenta is at the bottom of your uterus over your cervix. ?(Most healthy placentas attach high up in the uterus.) ?When the placenta is low, it is more likely to be positioned over old c-section scars (which are usually in the bottom front of your uterus.) ?It is easier for the placenta to attach and seep through old scar tissue than it is for placenta to attach to healthy uterine wall-- this makes sense to me. ?It is important to note, however, that you can have?Percreta?or even Accreta on your first pregnancy, or without any previous uterine surgeries. ?This condition is just one of those things that could happen in life.

Accreta is most dangerous when undetected prior to birth. ?After the baby is delivered, the doctor will try to deliver the placenta. ?When the placenta is attached to the uterine lining, it will come out easily. ?When the placenta is attached to the wall of the uterus, it will be difficult to remove after birth. ?Undetected?Accreta?will usually result in a placenta that tears during delivery- some comes out and some remains inside the uterus?hemorrhaging.? While they are cleaning up the recently delivered baby, the mother will start to feel sick, often begin throwing up and then will begin to?hemorrhage? ?Wise doctors will recognize the?hemorrhage?and rush the mother into an emergency hysterectomy where the uterus will be removed to stop the bleeding. ?If the mother has an undetected Percreta, as they remove the uterus, the bladder will tear and they will need to reconstruct the bladder also. ?Diagnosing this condition prior to birth is so important.

Accreta can be diagnosed by careful ultrasound?technicians?pretty early in pregnancy.?
Here are some warning signs that helped them diagnose me--
1- I bled early in my pregnancy (the first 12 weeks). ?I believe that I miscarried a twin and in the process shed much of my natural uterine lining making it easier for the remaining placenta to attach directly to the uterine wall. ?Accreta is not supposed to cause bleeding early in your pregnancy-- but, i do know others who have had a similar experience.
2- Early ultrasound showed a low-lying placenta. ?Placenta?Previa?paired with previous c-sections should immediately raise a red flag that Accreta might be present.
3- My placenta had Lacunae or black lakes in it. ?In the ultrasound, my placenta looked like Swiss cheese. ?It has gotten more swiss cheesey as it has grown, but the black lakes were certainly present early on and were good early warning signs.
4- ?I just knew something was wrong. ?Although my OB continually assured me that things were "fine" ?I just didn't feel like this was a normal pregnancy. ?I pushed to see a specialist and the minute the fetal medicine doctor saw my ultrasound he diagnosed me. ?Trust that gut feeling you have and seek the proper diagnosis.
5- Scoping my bladder showed placenta vessels invading.

My placenta is on the anterior wall of my uterus adhered to the myometrium, directly over my previous c-section scars, and has spread (like a cancer) to other organs in my abdomen, mainly my bladder, my cervix, and my colon. ?Doctors also note that my Percreta covers almost my whole placenta, not a small portion. ?They are hoping to begin steroid shots at 32 weeks and deliver with a large team of specialists (and a lot of waiting blood) no later than 34 weeks (that will be around June 1st). ?If I begin bleeding prior to 32 weeks, they will life flight me to OHSU. ?Spotting or bleeding will probably mean I'll be hospitalized prior to 32 weeks.

My delivery will be a scheduled surgery in the main OR. ?They expect over 20 doctors and it could take up to 8 or 9 hours. ?The last two?Percreta?patients at OHSU required 40 units of blood transfused and had a very intense surgery. ?A healthy adult only has about 10-12 units of blood in their body. ?Yeah, that is a lot of blood loss!

I am currently being treated by a team of specialists at OHSU. ?The head doctor I work with is in Perinatology and Fetal Medicine, my surgeon is in Gynecology/Oncology, I have a Hematologist that specializes in Obstetrics and a Urologist. ?Additionally they are coordinating with the blood bank to ensure there is enough blood ready for my extensive surgery and I've met with Anesthesiologists. ?In time, I will meet the NICU team. ?Yes, I have MANY doctor appointments. ?We feel SO blessed to have this baby and to be in the hands of skilled doctors. ?

I have been on complete pelvic rest and modified bed rest since 12 weeks of pregnancy. ?My husband and other kind family members are taking care of my home and family while I spend most of my days sitting or laying. ?This time of resting has been difficult, but it has also been a great gift. ?I am thankful for every week that this baby is growing bigger and healthy inside of my womb. ?I can't wait to meet this little guy-- our grand finale!!

This is a record of my pregnancy for my family and for those of you who may be experiencing something similar. ?Yes, I share a lot, perhaps too much. ?Thank you for being a part of this journey with me. ?I am one who learns much from the experiences of others and I'm happy to share my experience with you, in the hopes that somehow it may help.}

Week 23-- ?

Doctor Appointments.

Hematology-
They continue to do a lot of blood work to see if I'm having a hemalytic reaction to my blood transfusions.
I feel good and my blood looks good, so no transfusions.
She explained a lot of blood stuff that went over my head. ?Basically, I needed the assurance that they would be prepared with blood when the time comes for my surgery.
This doctor wants me to call her directly if I am concerned or begin to feel bad. ?I had been trying to leave messages with her nurses or nurse practitioners when I felt I was having a reaction and she said in the future contact her directly. ?Thank goodness!
Blood is looking good this month!
She ordered more lab work and sent me over to do labs following our appointment.

Perinatology-
Prior to my appointment I had another intense ultrasound which lasted over an hour- both external and vaginally.
The baby looks good, but my placenta is not good.
The whole bottom of my uterus looks like Swiss cheese placenta... there is no?discernible?defining line where the uterus usually is.

I can not accurately describe what it is like to see my ultrasound. ?It is almost UNBELIEVABLE.

Your uterus is like a balloon, on the right (or front of your body) is your bladder. ?The tie at the bottom is your cervix that opens during delivery to let out the baby and placenta, and to the left (or back) is your bowels and intestines. ?Other organs are squished all around your continually expanding balloon uterus.
On an ultrasound you can usually see the border of your uterus. ?It looks like a white line, in the shape of a big circle. ?The placenta is usually inside the border of the uterus. ?The bladder also looks like a smaller circular spot next to your uterus, and your cervix looks like a thick, fat carrot at the bottom.

On my ultrasound the whole bottom of my uterus looks like a blanket of swiss cheese placenta. ?You can't really see ANY uterus border... it's just placenta with a lot of small lakes of blood. ?Amidst this placenta there is a bigger lake-like thing, that is my bladder. ?There is a darker, hard to make out carrot shape, that is my cervix, and there is a mess of placenta and bowel. ?It's bad looking.

My room was full of doctors and residents and a sonographer and an even better sonographer and I'm asking questions like, "Is that my cervix?" ?"Is that my bladder?" ?And they are all looking at the screen with this look of "Wow. ?That's bad." ?I say, "So, they'll probably have to remove my cervix too." ?And they say, "Yes, definitely." ?It is UNREAL.

The sonographer was really trying to see the back of my uterus to determine how my placenta was involved with my bowels and intestine. ?She was using a stick ultrasound up INSIDE me. ?As she was trying to see deeper back into me she kept asking me to scoot down further. ?I finally laughed and told her I could scoot further down, but she would need to do an episiotomy if she was actually going to see any further inside me. ?(Sorry if that was too graphic.) ?Just another fun day on the ultrasound table.

The prognosis-- my placenta is attaching to my bladder (like we had seen previously), but it is also merging with my cervix and appears to be growing through the back of my uterus also, where my colon and intestine are located. ?AHH!!! ?That was new to me and not so good to hear.

My doctor thinks I look great and am doing well. ?She said she will not rest easy until my uterus is out of my body.

The "worst case" scenario?is that I will need to do some reconstructive surgery of my bladder and my bowels after delivery. ?(As if I can even say worst case, because I suppose it could ALWAYS be worse.) ?That surgery will involve a bag for urine and a?separate?bag for stool coming out of my abdomen for 4 months before they can reattach my bowels and bladder. ?(I still need to read up on this stuff-- I know a few people who have had this, is it called a colostomy?) ?Blah!! ?That didn't sound too fun to me. ?Hopefully it won't come to that.

This doctor said, "Don't worry, Dr. M (the oncology surgeon) is masterful with bowel reconstruction. ?She's a great surgeon." ?I am comforted by this, but would rather NOT need a masterful bowel reconstruction. ?I told my Perinatolgist that Dr. M seemed to think my surgery wasn't too horrible. ?With a laugh (meaning, yes, it is horrible), she explained to me that was NOT because it wasn't a tough surgery, it was only because I am skinny and in good shape. ?She said that I should heal well and am easier to operate on than someone heavier. ?I am glad I have SOMETHING positive going for me (I bet even that could change after 2 more months of low activity and high hunger... ha!)

Test Results.
CBC- Hemoglobin 8.3, Hematocrit 27
Echocardiogram-- very normal!
Ultrasound- shows?Percreta?in the anterior and posterior part of my uterus... blah.

Physically at 23 weeks.
I still really feel good. ?I'm grateful that my mom is here caring for my home and family so that I can rest.
I try to get out often and visit with friends.
I do not lay down all the time (it makes me feel horrible!)
I sit and walk a bit, take car trips, go to church, watch movies and plays, and do things with my family.
I am not lifting heavy things, running or climbing stairs, driving, or walking for long periods of time.
(I am SO grateful I am NOT bleeding!!)
I do nap or rest frequently. ?I am rarely alone at home or in the car (in case I begin to hemorrhage.)
I am in a lot of lower abdomen pain of I do too much, so i feel good about my limited activity level.

Mentally at 23 weeks.
We have had friends come visit and book groups at my house. ?My kids often invite friends over and I try to continue watching my kids play basketball or sing in their middle school play. ?Todd and I sneak out to dinner and a movie when we can. ?The more social I remain the happier my soul seems to be. ?I am so grateful for all that I can still do so I don't spend much time focused on what I'm not doing.

I wrote a big LONG post about how I deal with each item on my "not so good" list. ?(I'll publish that tomorrow in case you want to read for a few hours...)
Basically, my mentality is-- ?Life is good, even when it's hard.
Things could always be worse.
Most hard things come hand in hand with great blessings-- treasures of learning and growth that you would never have without experience.
And perspective-- ?People are going through hard things every day.
If they can do it, I can too.
A little "CRAP" in my life is nothing I can't handle.

Sometimes I get down and whine and tantrum... and those are good days too. ?They make me appreciate the times when I feel faithful.

Today, I feel faithful.
Life is good, with or without proper plumbing.
Please, take a second the next time you are sitting on the toilet and just BE GRATEFUL for all you CAN do ?(or doo doo).

Dinosaurs: Placodonts populated flat coastal regions in what is now Europe and China

Mar. 27, 2013 ? For around 50 million years, placodonts populated the flat coastal regions of the Tethys Ocean, in modern day Europe and China. The most distinctive feature of these dinosaurs was their teeth: The upper jaw had two rows of flattened teeth -- one on the palate and one on the jawbone -- while the lower jaw only had one set of teeth ideal for crushing shellfish and crustaceans.

The evolutionary origins of these placodonts remained unclear. However, a new find in a 246-million-year-old sediment layer now sheds light on the origin and phylogenetic development of the placodonts. As the Swiss and German team headed by Torsten Scheyer, a paleontologist at the University of Zurich, reveals the skull found in Winterswijk (Netherlands) is the earliest form of all known placodonts. The juvenile animal lived 246 million years ago. At around two centimeters in size, the skull is exceptionally well preserved and its characteristics set it apart from previous placodont discoveries.

Double row of pointed teeth

The basal-most known placodonts to date have the group's trademark double row of crushing teeth in the upper jaw. The flattened teeth that give these animals their name only appear in more derived placodonts. "Unlike all the other placodonts discovered to date, the Winterswijk specimen has conical, pointed teeth instead of flattened or ball-shaped crushing ones," explains Scheyer, "which means the pointed teeth on the lower jaw slotted precisely into the gap between the palate and upper-jawbone teeth when biting."

The group's trademark double row of teeth in the upper jaw is proof that the new find is actually a placodont. According to the researchers, the teeth of Palatodonta bleekeri, the scientific name given to the Winterswijk specimen, were specialized in gripping and piercing soft prey. "The double row of teeth in the new find combined with its considerable age lead us to conclude that it is a very early placodont, from which the later forms developed," says Scheyer. The formation of crushing teeth and the specialization of a diet of shellfish and crustaceans thus developed later within placodont evolution.

European origin confirmed

The small Palatodonta bleekeri skull sheds new light on the ongoing debate on where the placodonts originated: Previous finds suggested origins in the shelf sea areas of either present-day China or Europe. Due to the considerable age of the new Dutch find and its basal form, however, the European origin of the placodonts is deemed confirmed. Scheyer and his colleagues are hoping for further exciting finds in Winterswijk to discover more about the evolution of the placodonts.

New insights into the development of the heart

Viewed from the outside, our body looks completely symmetrical. However, most internal organs ? including the heart ? are formed asymmetrically. The right side of the heart is responsible for pulmonary circulation; the left side supplies the rest of the body. This asymmetry allows the heart to do its job effectively. In a study on zebrafish embryos, the researchers Dr. Justus Veerkamp and PD Dr. Salim Seyfried from the Max Delbr?ck Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch have now shown how the left and right sides of the heart develop differently.

A protein called Nodal plays an important role in the development of asymmetry. In an early stage of heart development, Nodal is formed on the left side and triggers a multi-step signaling cascade that enables the cardiac progenitor cells on this side to migrate faster. The researchers were able to observe the migration of the cardiac progenitor cells in the zebrafish embryos in vivo. Since the embryos are transparent it is possible to view each single cell using the microscope.

While analyzing the individual proteins involved in the asymmetric development of the heart, Dr. Veerkamp and Dr. Seyfried encountered a surprise: Previously, scientists had assumed that another signaling molecule, the protein Bmp, triggered cell migration on the left side of the heart and, as a consequence, must be very active there.

Current studies, however, show just the opposite: Bmp reduces the motility of the cells that form the heart. The protein Nodal regulates this process by activating the enzyme Has2. This in turn restricts Bmp activity on the left side. Thus, the cells of the left side of the heart migrate faster and ultimately form a functional, asymmetric heart.

However, when the researchers modulated the experiments so that individual proteins of the signaling cascade were expressed at elevated or decreased levels, the cardiac cells showed subtle differences in "random walk" cell motility rates. This resulted in the development of hearts that were completely symmetrical or whose sides were laterally inverted.

Many of these malformations of the heart in zebrafish embryos are also known in humans. Often asymmetric disorders not only affect the heart but also other organs such as the spleen. It may be missing or two spleens may be present. Depending on the severity of the malformations, the problems of the affected individuals vary in seriousness. It is also possible that the processes identified by the researchers are also involved in the development of diseases in which cell migration plays a role.

Stocks edge higher at open; S&P closing high in sight

The S&P 500 hit its closing high level of 1,565.15 on the final trading day of the first quarter, as the relative calm surrounding the opening of Cyprus banks trumped a mixed bag of economic reports.

The next milestone on the S&P 500 will be its all-time intraday high of 1,576.09, set on October 11, 2007.

The Dow has soared nearly 11 percent this year, on pace to logging its best first-quarter in 15 years. The S&P 500 has jumped almost 10 percent.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was trading higher.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq rose. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, traded below 13.

Most key S&P sectors were higher, led by utilities, while financials lagged.

"From a technical perspective, everyone wants to know the implications of the S&P 500 finally setting a new closing high - that day will mean little to us," wrote Sam Stovall, chief equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ. "It's the action in the period that follows that we think matters the most. A meaningful move to us would be a strong break above the old high, perhaps by 2 percent, followed by a test of the old high, and then a resumption of the uptrend."

On the economic front, the U.S. economy grew at a 0.4 percent annual rate, according to the Commerce Department, just a touch below the 0.5 percent gain expected by economists in a Reuters survey. However, the reading was higher than the government's previous estimate of a tepid 0.1 percent expansion rate.

Weekly jobless claims jumped 16,000 to a seasonally adjusted 357,000, according to the Labor Department, but the gain was still in the middle of their range for the year. Economists polled by Reuters had expected a reading of 340,000.

Meanwhile, the pace of business activity in the Midwest slowed in March, with the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago barometer dipping to 52.4 from 56.8 in February. A reading above 50 indicates expansion in the regional economy.

In Europe, Cypriot banks re-opened after an almost two-week closure to relative calm. Strict capital control measures were imposed and could remain in place for weeks. Cypriots will not be allowed to withdraw more than 300 euros a day, cash checks, or take more than 3,000 euros when traveling abroad.

In company news, Blackberry reported quarterly earnings that outpaced market expectations, boosted in part by the launch of its new BlackBerry 10 smartphone. Still, the company lost subscribers at a rapid pace, with the base of users contracting to 76 million from 79 million. (Read More: Is BlackBerry's Turnaround on Track?)

Pinnacle Foods jumped in their NYSE debut as the packaged foods maker priced at $20, at the top of their expected range of $18 to $20.

Goldman Sachs edged higher after Guggenheim started coverage of the banking giant with a "buy" rating and price target of $175. Meanwhile, the brokerage initiated coverage of Morgan Stanley with a "neutral" rating and a price target of $25.

United Technologies rose after Morgan Stanley initiated coverage of the Dow component with an "overweight" rating, saying the company has "significant, broad-based" tailwinds.

Volume is expected to remain relatively low ahead of Good Friday. Markets will be closed in the United States and most of Europe, but banks will be open. Economic data including personal income and consumer sentiment are expected to be reported Friday.

No Googling, says Google ? unless you really mean it

You hear it in movies, TV shows, among your friends and you probably say it yourself: "I Googled her before I called her." "I know because I Googled it." "What's the temperature in Fargo? Google it!"

But Google wants you ? and the world ? to stop using Google as a verb for looking up anything on the Internet ? unless you actually used Google's search engine to do so.

Google's laser focus on how its name is used even extends to Sweden, where the country's Language Council recently wanted to add the word "ungoogleable" to a list of new words as meaning something that can't be found on the Web using a search engine. Note: a search engine ? not necessarily Google's.

Google objected, according to the Associated Press, "asking for changes showing the expression specifically refers to Google searches and a disclaimer saying Google is a registered trademark, the council said Tuesday." The group expressed its "displeasure with Google's attempts to control the language."

Google told NBC News Tuesday it did not ask the council to remove the word, but only wanted some editing of the definition.

With Google as the leading search engine, there's little doubt that we mean Google when we say we Googled something. As comedian Ellen DeGeneres said on her show, talking about technology's impact on our lives, "If you need to know something immediately, you can Google it now .... Ten years ago, if you said you were going to 'Google' someone, you got written up by Human Resources."

So, what's so bad about using "Google" as a verb for saying you looked up information on the Internet?

Ironically, because of Google's "significant brand recognition," the company "has started down the path of becoming synonymous with search engine services and, accordingly, towards the genericization of a trademark," wrote attorney Matthew Swyers, founder of a law firm specializing in trademark rights, in an article for Inc. last year.

And becoming generic is bad because it threatens a company's legal right to a trademark.

"Aspirin was originally a trademark of Bayer AG," Swyers wrote. "Escalator was originally a trademark of the Otis Elevator Company. Even the word Zipper, at one time, was a trademark owned by B.F. Goodrich. Now, because of their respective fame and genericization, they merely refer to classes of products we see every day and do not identify the source of those goods."

Google pointed out its concerns as far back as 2006 in a blog post about the use of Google as a verb:

A trademark is a word, name, symbol or device that identifies a particular company's products or services. Google is a trademark identifying Google Inc. and our search technology and services. While we're pleased that so many people think of us when they think of searching the web, let's face it, we do have a brand to protect, so we'd like to make clear that you should please only use "Google" when you?re actually referring to Google Inc. and our services.

Kory Stamper, associate editor of Merriam-Webster, Inc., told NBC News that the verb "google," as well as "Google" was first added to the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition, and to its online dictionary in 2006, "based entirely on its use in edited English prose."

The Merriam-Webster definition of "google" (lowercase or capitalized), "googled" and "googling" is this: "to use the Google search engine to obtain information about (as a person) on the World Wide Web."

There are three criteria for a word making it into the Merriam-Webster dictionary, she said: Widespread usage of a word, "sustained use" and "meaningful use."

"By the time we did the copyright printing of the Collegiate Dictionary for 2006, we had enough evidence in our files to show that the verb 'google' had met all three criteria for entry," Stamper said, adding: "It's worth noting that the verb 'google' dates back to at least 1998, according to recent information we've gathered."

Despite what happened in Sweden, Google says it's not stepping up, but rather just continuing, its ongoing efforts to patrol its trademark.

"While Google, like many businesses, takes routine steps to protect our trademarks, we are pleased that users connect the Google name with great search results," a company spokesperson said in a statement to NBC News Tuesday.

And, perhaps as NBC News' own Internet expert Helen A.S. Popkin noted, "Google as a verb is brand awareness. When Willow used 'google' as a verb on 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' everyone knew Lycos and Jeeves and Yahoo were cooked."

Google adds street views inside Japan nuclear zone

TOKYO (AP) ? Concrete rubble litters streets lined with shuttered shops and dark windows. A collapsed roof juts from the ground. A ship sits stranded on a stretch of dirt flattened when the tsunami roared across the coastline. There isn't a person in sight.

Google Street View is giving the world a rare glimpse into one of Japan's eerie ghost towns, created when the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami sparked a nuclear disaster that has left the area uninhabitable.

The technology pieces together digital images captured by Google's fleet of camera-equipped vehicles and allows viewers to take virtual tours of locations around the world, including faraway spots like the South Pole and fantastic landscapes like the Grand Canyon.

Now it is taking people inside Japan's nuclear no-go zone, to the city of Namie, whose 21,000 residents have been unable to return to live since they fled the radiation spewing from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant two years ago.

Koto Naganuma, 32, who lost her home in the tsunami, said some people find it too painful to see the places that were so familiar yet are now so out of reach.

She has only gone back once, a year ago, and for a few minutes.

"I'm looking forward to it. I'm excited I can take a look at those places that are so dear to me," said Naganuma. "It would be hard, too. No one is going to be there."

Namie Mayor Tamotsu Baba said memories came flooding back as he looked at the images shot by Google earlier this month.

He spotted an area where an autumn festival used to be held and another of an elementary school that was once packed with schoolchildren.

"Those of us in the older generation feel that we received this town from our forbearers, and we feel great pain that we cannot pass it down to our children," he said in a post on his blog.

"We want this Street View imagery to become a permanent record of what happened to Namie-machi in the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster."

Street View was started in 2007, and now provides images from more than 3,000 cities across 48 countries, as well as parts of the Arctic and Antarctica.
