Thunderstorms expect, red flag warning issued for Western Washington

The National Weather Service of Seattle issued a red flag warning from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 p.m Sunday afternoon across much of Western Washington, including Kitsap County and the Puget Sound.

Firefighters should be prepared for potential wildfires this weekend as thunderstorms are expected to form.

A red flag warning is issued when for the combination of dry fuels and incoming weather that would be a factor to creating wildfires because of dry humidity, lightning, and/or strong winds that could help quickly spread any wildfire, with lightning the biggest threat.

The National Weather Service reported an approaching area of low pressure from California will bring unstable air to our region, starting to the south Friday afternoon, then spreading across the area Friday night. As the low continues its slow approach to the Washington coast for Sunday, conditions are favorable for thunderstorm development over the Olympics during the period.

Upper level winds are expected from the east/southeast that could push thunderstorms off the Cascades into the lowlands where lightning can also spark fires. This overall pattern would be a somewhat similar situation to the thunderstorms that roamed across our region last Wednesday.

The threat for the lowlands remains Sunday night as the low moves away. Thunderstorms can bring lightning and gusty winds which could fuel new or existing fires.

DIGITS: For 2016, focus on feeling, not the field

You know all those polls that say Hillary Rodham Clinton has the lead in the race for president in 2016? Ignore them.

Polling on presidential preferences this far out is meaningless.

The pollsters who test hypothetical matchups are hanging a lot on their opening line: "If the election for president were being held today ..." But the truth is, the election is more than three years away, and a poll now cannot tell you how people will vote in the future.

Three years from now, the results of those polls might look like they were on point. Then again, they might look as silly as Gallup's July 2005 finding that Rudy Giuliani would beat Hillary Rodham Clinton in the 2008 presidential race by 50 percent to 43 percent.

Even though people are willing to express preferences when pollsters ask for them, there's no way to know if those preferences will hold up through three years of campaigns, news and our own ever-evolving lives. Mostly, head-to-head matchups now measure partisanship, whether a person has heard of either candidate and whether the voter likes them.

So it stands to reason that the better use of polls is to measure what people know and feel about those who might run for office. Although voters' current impressions of the candidates don't tell you much about how they might vote three years down the road, pollsters start to collect that kind of data now to establish a baseline.

The first time Quinnipiac University measured voters' impressions of Barack Obama in February 2006, 59 percent of them said they had no idea who he was. Fast-forward 980 days and 53 percent who cast a ballot actually voted for him.

The story of what happened in between those two reads on Obama came partly from pollsters who asked the same questions at multiple points in the campaign and looked to see how things changed.

As they did in 2006, Quinnipiac recently conducted a poll to gauge voters' starting-line views on a slew of political figures who could run for the presidency in 2016.

Of the 16 people who may harbor aspirations for the White House that were tested in the poll, Clinton was best known, with 98 percent offering an opinion, and also one of the most positively viewed. Joe Biden is also widely known, with 92 percent offering an opinion on the current vice president.

From there, the public gets fuzzier, and therefore more susceptible to persuasion about a possible candidate.

About a quarter said they didn't know enough to have an opinion on Biden's opponent for the vice presidency in 2012, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis. And 1 in 5 are unsure about New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie or former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. Three in 10 say they're not sure about former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who made an impressive run at the GOP nomination for president last year.

Majorities say they haven't heard enough to form an opinion about Democrats like Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley; or Republicans like Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and New York Rep. Peter King ? nearly all familiar to those following prognostications about the 2016 campaign to come.

As that campaign gets going, we'll know which candidates are gaining traction outside the political establishment, whom they're attracting and whom they're repelling because of just this kind of early polling, and in a more meaningful way than if all we had were hypothetical vote preferences.

London Whale boss's prestigious pad appears empty

Javier Martin-Artajo, the former JPMorgan executive reported to be under threat of arrest over the "London Whale" trading losses, escaped the City to a prestigious country address - which appeared empty on Monday.

Media reports on Friday suggested Martin-Artajo and former colleague Julien Grout could be arrested within days, on charges of masking a multi-billion dollar trading loss, which has cost the bank more than $6 billion. However, Martin-Artajo's house was unoccupied on Monday, and neighbors told CNBC he might have left the country.

(Read more: Authorities plan to arrest 2 former JPMorgan employees in 'London Whale' case )

The banker lives in Chipping Norton in the Cotswolds, a short drive from the homes of Prime Minister David Cameron and former News Corp executive Rebekah Brooks, who will contest charges related to phone hacking at London's highest criminal court in September. The area and its inhabitants, known as the 'Chipping Norton set', came under the spotlight last year when it emerged that Cameron had ridden a horse Brooks had been given by the Metropolitan Police, in a story seen by some as highlighting the close links between News Corp, the government and the police.

Martin-Artajo and his wife Sarah were at their sprawling property in the area with their children until Saturday morning, when they left, two neighbors told CNBC. This followed reports in the U.S. on Friday night that he was likely to be arrested imminently, although one neighbor said that the family was often away during the summer months.

On Monday, there were only cleaners in the house, a classic Cotswolds stone home in a small country village. Neighbors did not know when the family were planning to return, or where they had gone.

Martin-Artajo did not respond to requests for comment. He has previously denied wrong-doing through his lawyer, and JPMorgan dropped a lawsuit against him over the losses. He managed Bruno Iksil, the trader who was labeled the 'London whale' because of the size of his trades, which were big enough to affect global credit markets. Iksil claimed to have told Martin-Artajo the size of his positions were "scary" early in 2012.

(Read more: Jamie Dimon defends actions in Whale case )

If Martin-Artajo is to be prosecuted, it will be in the U.S., where a Senate report criticized JPMorgan's management of the trades earlier this year. Martin-Artajo is a native of Spain, which has an extradition treaty with the U.S.

NH lifetime achievement award for Stephen Sondheim

PETERBOROUGH, N.H. (AP) ? Broadway composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim is being awarded one of the top honors in the arts world: the Edward MacDowell Medal for lifetime achievement.

The award is being presented Sunday at the MacDowell Colony, the prestigious retreat for artists, writers and composers in Peterborough, N.H. This is the first time the medal has been awarded for achievement in musical theater. Past recipients include Robert Frost and Georgia O'Keefe.

In a statement when the award was announced, Sondheim called the medal a "sort of homecoming," noting that as a child he used to play compositions by Edward MacDowell, for whom the prize is named.

Sondheim has won more Tony Awards than any other composer. His hit musicals include "Follies," ''A Little Night Music" and "Sweeney Todd."

California Churches Make Hollywood Cameos

California is home to many beautiful Catholic churches as well as home to Hollywood.

Consequently, the state?s churches have frequently caught the eye of filmmakers and appeared in well-known movies and television shows.?

The following is a sampling of some Catholic churches that have made movie cameos that moviegoers will recognize.

The next time you?re in California, you might enjoy stopping by and seeing some of these famous and beautiful locations.

St. Paul Church, San Francisco: St. Paul?s is an attractive church in the Noe Valley region of San Francisco.?The parish was founded in the late 1800s; its English-Gothic church was built 1897-1911 (it took 14 years because it was built as funds were raised). It has magnificent architecture and art, as well as prominent twin towers, beautiful stained-glass windows and impressive woodwork.?The church was nearly closed in the 1990s due to concerns that it might collapse in an earthquake, but parishioners persuaded the San Francisco Archdiocese to keep it open after a seismic retrofit was performed. As is noted in the parish?s official history, it is one of the principal locations for the filming of the 1992 musical-comedy Sister Act.?In the film, Whoopi Goldberg is a lounge singer who hides out from the mob as a nun in San Francisco.?Whoopi uses her musical talents to tutor the nuns? choir. Remember when she teaches them her upbeat version of the Salve Regina? That sequence was filmed inside St. Paul?s.

St. Monica?s, Santa Monica: St. Monica?s parish was established in 1886; the present church was built in 1925.?A number of celebrities have attended Mass there through the years.?

St. Monica?s was also a principal filming location for the 1944 film Going My Way, in which Bing Crosby portrayed one of Hollywood?s most lovable priest-characters.?Crosby?s character is sent to take over the parish from Barry Fitzgerald?s character, an old-school priest from Ireland, who was based on a former pastor of St. Monica?s: Msgr. Nicholas Conneally, a friend of the film?s director and writer, who attended the parish.?Filming was done in the church?s rectory and a replica of its dining room.

Mission Dolores, San Francisco: Mission Dolores was founded in 1776, five days before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Established by Spanish Franciscans and built to serve the Ohlone Indians who inhabited the region, it is the city?s oldest building. Blessed Junipero Serra, leader of the Franciscans, celebrated Mass here. Today, it is located in the busy Mission District.?Towering on one side of the church is the newer basilica-church; on the other side is a portion of the original cemetery.?All three portions of the property have appeared in films and television shows. The most famous is the 1958 Alfred Hitchcock classic Vertigo.?Jimmy Stewart follows Kim Novak to the Mission Dolores cemetery, where her character visits the grave of Carlotta Valdes. Ask a docent to show you the exact spot of the famous scene.?(Further south, incidentally, Mission San Juan Bautista was also an important filming location for the Hitchcock film.) The interior of old Mission Dolores church is the backdrop for the Henry Fonda-Lucille Ball wedding scene in the 1968 Yours, Mine and Ours.?The first seven minutes of The Streets of San Francisco?s "For the Love of God" episode was filmed in the basilica-church in 1972, where a murderer was after San Francisco clergy, and Karl Malden?s Lt. Mike Stone was on the case to catch him.?Clear shots of both the inside and the outside of the basilica were seen in this episode.

St. Brendan?s, Los Angeles: St. Brendan?s is a magnificent old church, a few blocks off Wilshire Boulevard, west of downtown Los Angeles.?The 1927 church is built in the Gothic-Revival style and has a majestic exterior and beautiful interior.?Perhaps due to its close proximity to Hollywood, St. Brendan?s has been the backdrop for many Hollywood productions.?Among the most famous is the 1953 War of the Worlds.?At the end of the film, as alien spacecraft destroy Los Angeles, terrified Angelinos flock to St. Brendan?s to pray and await the end of the world.?Both the inside and outside of the church are featured.?

Blessed Sacrament Church, Hollywood: Established in 1904, Blessed Sacrament was Hollywood?s first church.?The current church was built in the Italian-Renaissance style and was dedicated in 1928.?It is located on Hollywood?s famous Sunset Boulevard and is home to many impressive works of art.?It is staffed by Jesuits. In its early years, Hollywood filmmakers had a close relationship with Blessed Sacrament.?The first professional organization for screen writers and actors, the precursor to the Writers? and Screen Actors? Guilds, was formed at the church.?Its pastor in the 1920s, Father Daniel Stack, served as a technical adviser for movies with religious and Catholic elements, and parishioners were used as movie extras.?Hollywood studios provided actors and equipment free of charge for church-sponsored fundraisers, such as theatrical productions and festivals, proceeds from which the church used to build a rectory and school. A long line of celebrities once attended the church, and it was the location of the weddings and funerals of many prominent people. The church was also a convenient location for filming scenes in many movies and television shows.?For example, a 2001 episode of ER featured actor James Cromwell playing Bishop Stewart officiating at an ordination. Jesuits were cast as extras.

St. Vincent de Paul, Los Angeles: St. Vincent de Paul is located near the University of Southern California and the Los Angeles Coliseum.?It was established in 1886, and the current church was built 1923-25.?(Its architect, Albert Martin, was a well-known church designer in his day; he also designed St. Monica?s in Santa Monica.)?The current church was built in the Spanish-Baroque style, with a mix of California architecture.?It has an ornate exterior, including a bell tower, entryway and dome over the altar area.?The interior has a stunning traditional altar that is just as ornate, with high ceilings and arches.?It has many beautiful statues and stained-glass windows.?In 1971, the city designated it as a historic monument. It, too, has caught the eye of filmmakers.?In the 1999 horror film End of Days, for example, its interior was used for a special-effects battle with the devil (although this reference in no way implies the Register?s endorsement of this or other films).

Sts. Peter and Paul, San Francisco: Sts. Peter and Paul is one of the Bay Area?s most magnificent churches, located in San Francisco?s North Beach.?The current church was built in 1924 and is a feast for the eyes, with all of its Italian-Catholic art.?At one time, it served a predominantly Italian community; today, it serves many in the Chinese community. Salesian priests of Don Bosco still serve the parish.?Its majestic twin towers are a prominent feature in the city?s skyline. The church has been the backdrop for many films, including Dirty Harry movies and Cecil B. DeMille?s 1923 classic The Ten Commandments.

President Obama proposes review, new oversight measures in wake of NSA scandal

President Obama seeks to improve transparency and restore trust following PRISM scandal

Revelations of government surveillance programs, including the headline-grabbing PRISM, have been nothing short of a PR nightmare for the White House. President Obama, who ran in part on a platform that included opposition to certain elements of the Patriot Act and President Bush's illegal wiretapping program, has faced tough questions about his role in the NSA data collection system. Today, he addressed reporters in the White House press room and, as part of his regular briefing, began to layout a path to increased transparency that he hopes will re-earn the trust of the citizens.

After consulting with members of congress and civil liberties organizations, President Obama has come up with four initial steps to improve transparency and confidence, while working to maintain essential security apparatus. First up, is a direct dialog with congress about reforming section 215 of the Patriot Act, which is the part of the legislation regarding the collection of telephone records. Obama also took the opportunity to reiterate that the government does not have the ability to eavesdrop on phone calls without a warrant. The second step also involved congress and working to improve confidence in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC). Most notably, he said the government would pursue reforms that would ensure judges would hear opposing views from independent civil liberties proponents, in addition to government representatives.

MINERAL WELLS, Texas -- Authorities say a teenager has discovered the body of his mother in a freezer at her North Texas home.

Mineral Wells Police Chief Dean Sullivan says the body was discovered Thursday evening and that the death is being investigated as a possible homicide. He says no suspects have been identified.

The name of the woman, believed to be in her 40s, is being withheld by police, who are being assisted by Texas Rangers. Authorities are awaiting the results of an autopsy.

The body was found in a deep freezer often used to store meat and other foods for long periods. It's not clear what led the teen to look in the freezer. The boy called police after finding his mother.

Mineral Wells is about 50 miles west of Fort Worth.

Accusation: Filthy Filner Sexually Harassed Female Veterans Who Were Raped in the Military

If this isn't the definition of scumbag, I'm not sure what is. CNN reported (while failing to mention he's a Democrat) yesterday Democratic Mayor of San Diego Bob Filthy Filner has been accused by at least eight female veterans of inappropriate sexual conduct during his time as a Congressman. The worst part? These same women were victims of sexual assault in the military before Filner got to them.....as the chairman of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee.?
They are also among at least eight female veterans and members of the National Women's Veterans Association of America (NWVAA) in San Diego who have made accusations against the mayor. Almost all of the women say they were victims of sexual assault while they were in the military.

The women, like Fernandez, say the former chairman of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee used his significant power and credentials to access military sexual assault survivors, who they say are less likely to complain.

Tara Jones, the president of the group, said she's spoken to seven to eight women who had varying encounters with Filner at the women's veteran events, from groping to unwanted requests for dates.

"He went to dinners, asked women out to dinners, grabbed breasts, buttocks. The full gamut. Everything that is complete violation of what we stand for," Jones said. "He's a sexual predator. And he used this organization for his own personal agenda."

Jones remembers Filner's speeches, where he has often called for a zero tolerance of sexual abuse in the armed forces. She said she feels not only outrage but also a deep and familiar sense of being victimized by a man of power.

"He preyed upon people who were vulnerable, who he knew nine times out of 10 would not speak up, that didn't have enough strength in them to speak up," she said. "It's not OK. You need to not be in office. You need to be out of office. You need to not have the ability to prey on others."

How absolutely horrifying. These women came out of the military having been sexually assaulted only to further receive abuse from a Congressman who was supposed to be helping them. If you're wondering where the massive outrage from the Democratic Party is over Filner, there hasn't been nearly enough.

Filner is currently in rehab and still wants taxpayers to foot the bills for more than a dozen accusations of sexual misconduct against him. And just as a reminder, Filner's disgusting and creepy behavior has been going on for a decade according to Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen.?

This guy has kind of been this way all along. That everybody thought that he was a little creepy.

Google Wallet dropping NFC loyalty points and gift cards

DNP Google deactivating NFC functionality for loyalty and gift cards August 21st

Google is fundamentally changing how an aspect of Wallet works. Again. On August 21st, Mountain View is turning NFC functionality off for Wallet-stored gift and loyalty cards and recommends spending any gift card balances before the deadline later this month (i.e., within 12 days from now). However, if you still have the physical cards, you're in the clear and can use them without worry. The search giant stressed that it's working with retailers on other options for gift and loyalty card redemption, and that this latest change would not affect other aspects of the Wallet service, including its ability to handle debit or credit card transactions.

Loyalty program linking is something Google has been showing off since Wallet was first detailed, so it's curious to see the service suddenly being limited like this. When we asked for clarification, a company spokesperson replied that there wasn't much more they could share. Page and Co. said its working on a solution though, and will have details to talk about "soon."

US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit revives Apple's ITC battle with Motorola over multitouch patents

It's been well over a year since the ITC ended its initial investigation into Apple's allegations that a spate of Motorola mobile devices infringed its patents on multi-touch display technology. Apple remained undeterred by that ruling and appealed the decision to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Today, Cupertino got what it wanted when the CAFC overturned parts of the ITC's decision, and remanded it back to the ITC for further consideration.

Inside Foursquare's Growing Revenue, Which Could Reach $20M In 2013

2013-08-06_12h27_51Aside from what Path is worth, the way in which Foursquare will monetize its user base and dataset is perhaps the most popular conversation over the second cocktail in Silicon Valley. At least if I’m there. Today, in a Fast Company profile, new figures were disclosed concerning Foursquare’s revenue: It’s growing. Ben Horowitz, a Foursquare investor, told Fast Company’s Austin Carr that Foursquare had brought in more than four times its total 2012 revenue by around the middle of the year. As both Carr and Alyson Shontell have noted, that puts Foursquare’s 2013 top line on a run rate between $15 million and $20 million. Compared to 2012′s painfully paltry $2 million in revenue, the new figures are — and we’re leaning on data released by an investor with a firm financial interest in Foursquare’s success — almost rosy. However, at its 2013 revenue pace, can Foursquare break even? Can it drive meaningful profit? Foursquare’s CEO and founder Dennis Crowley told Carr that his company has 160 employees. The old rule of thumb was that you could mentally budget $100,000 per employee in yearly costs, after taking into account rent, insurance costs, and the like. However, given Foursquare’s split profile between San Francisco and New York, I think that the old rule is outdated and far too conservative. Let’s be polite and assume that the figure is $150,000 per worker, giving Foursquare costs in 2013, for personnel alone, of $24 million. So before servers, advertising, expansion and SXSW parties are taken into account, Foursquare is still set to lose money in 2013. And I’d wager that its cash burn isn’t small. It has cash now, raised via convertible debt, but those accounts will depress in time. Foursquare will then have to raise money from private investors, the public markets, or seek an exit. Its ability to do any of the three will depend on its ability to accelerate its revenue growth in dollar terms, and, if it wants to go public, demonstrate profitability, at least briefly. Can it? Inside of Carr’s profile is a telling paragraph, delineating how Foursquare might generate new revenue. I quote at length to preserve voice: The biggest near-term revenue will likely come from the 1.4 million local merchants on the platform. The company plans to start charging them for its ad products on a cost-per-action basis later this year, which could prove a boon to

Potential role of 'love hormone' oxytocin in brain function revealed

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Researchers have deciphered how oxytocin, acting as a neurohormone in the brain, not only reduces background noise, but more importantly, increases the strength of desired signals. These findings may be relevant to autism, which affects one in 88 children in the United States.

France to close embassy in Yemen temporarily on security fears

PARIS (Reuters) - France said it would close its embassy in Yemen for several days from Sunday and urged its citizens in the country to take precautions because of elevated security threats.

The decision came after similar moves by Britain and Germany, which followed a U.S. decision to issue a travel alert to its citizens and to close embassies temporarily in the Middle East and Africa.

"We have elements that lead us to believe that the threat is very serious and other countries have also taken similar steps," French President Francois Hollande said during a Saturday visit to southwest France focused on agricultural issues.

"Therefore the embassy will be closed for several days. We are also conscious that we will have to keep up extreme vigilance in the coming weeks, especially for people travelling in the area."

A French Foreign Ministry spokesman confirmed the move but said only that the embassy would be closed on August 4.

Interpol, the France-based international police agency, on Saturday issued a global security alert advising member states to increase vigilance against attacks after a series of prison breaks in Iraq, Libya and Pakistan. Interpol said it was is investigating to determine if the escapes were linked.

Prison breaks took place in Pakistan on July 31 in a Taliban-led operation, and in Iraq at the Abu Ghraib prison overnight on July 22. Some 500 convicts, among them senior al Qaeda operatives, escaped from Abu Ghraib.

More than 1,100 inmates broke out of a prison on the outskirts of Benghazi on July 27.

Interpol also noted that August was the anniversary of several attacks in past years, including those in Mumbai and Nairobi.

The U.S. State Department said on Thursday American embassies that would normally be open this Sunday - including those in Abu Dhabi, Baghdad and Cairo - would be closed that day because of unspecified security concerns. On Friday, it also issued a global travel alert.

The European Union said that it would be taking "all necessary precautions" following the U.S. announcement.

"We are particularly concerned about the security situation in the final days of Ramadan and into Eid," the British Foreign Office said in a statement, referring to the Muslim holy month which ends on Wednesday evening.

CBS: No negotiations taking place with Time Warner

NEW YORK (AP) ? CBS says there are currently no negotiations taking place with Time Warner Cable, which stopped carrying the network in select markets on Friday in a spat over fees.

The network says in a statement that it had asked the cable provider to continue negotiating while its programming was still on the air. It says Time Warner rejected the request.

"We remain ready to negotiate in good faith when they are," CBS says in a statement.

A spokeswoman for Time Warner, Maureen Huff, had said earlier in the day that "Talks continue."

The standoff means 3 million affected customers in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas and other cities do not have access to CBS.

Review: Exo, A Cricket-Based Protein Bar That Won't Destroy Your Productivity

bar-picMy sweet tooth is the enemy of productivity: sugary snacks are a way ticket to midday brain fog and squishy love handles. As TechCrunch's resident healthnut, I regularly get pitched by food startups claiming to solve the workplace snacking problem, but their "healthy" alternatives invariably raise my blood sugar like Snickers bar fried in Pepsi.
