Boston College Basketball: Keys for the URI game

While you first look at URI's record and see it's 2-12, you may think this will be a comfortable win for the young Eagles. However, this game is no cakewalk. After seeing the URI vs. Providence game, I believe there is a chance the Eagles can lose this one. I'm going to the game, so I figured I might do some keys to the game.

1. Slow down the tempo: They are called the "Runnin' Rams" for a reason. Jim Baron's club is most effective when they speed up the tempo. Early on against Providence, the Rams controlled the tempo and took a 14-9 lead. After Providence slowed the tempo a little more and played in the half court, URI had massive problems scoring.

2. Take advantage of URI's press: Jim Baron loves to press, and the young Eagles have had trouble breaking the press before. Jordan Daniels and Gabe Moton are going to have to be good floor leaders and command the team handling the ball. Also, if you break the press, it's going to allow a lot of open shots. Providence broke the press effectively against the Rams, and Providence constantly got easy buckets.

3. Box out and rebound effectively: URI has 2 very good rebounding big men in Jonathan Holton and Orion Outerbridge. The Rams average 37.8 rebounds per game, putting them at 73 in the country. The Eagles big men are going to be tested, so they need to be ready.

4. Don't turn the ball over: URI is at their best when they force a lot of turnovers. Providence turned it over 8 times in 4 minutes against the Rams, but adjusted to only have 11 the rest of the game. And Providence still blew out URI by 19.

5. Make the scoring for both teams come from the perimeter and the free throw line: URI can't shoot, plain and simple. They were 3-20 from 3 against Providence. 3-19 against UCF. 1-12 against Cleveland State. Donahue needs to realize that he can easily beat URI if the scoring for both teams comes from the perimeter and free throw line. URI gave Providence 35, yes, 35, free throws. Providence only made 22, but 22 points is a lot.

Prediction: I think BC wins the game, but URI is always really pesky and hangs around a lot until the end.

Manny Harris hopes road to NBA goes through Canton

A year after playing 54 games ? and starting 15 ? as an undrafted rookie for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Manny Harris finds himself in Canton.

The 22-year-old Harris is trying to get healthy to play for the NBA Development League?s Charge. And in his mind, it?s simply an evolutionary step in the life of a young player. A step back to where he ultimately will be.

Harris was waived by the Cavs last week after a freak injury ? freezer burn ? to his right foot kept him out of training camp.

?The first thing I thought was just, ?Get healthy,? ? Harris said about getting cut. ?I?m confident that I?m going to be in the NBA at the end of the day. But you got to get healthy first, before anything.?

In Harris? mind, he?s in the D-League because of an injury.

Whether that?s the case or not is uncertain. Harris, a 6-foot-5, 185-pound shooting guard, averaged 5.9 points on 37.4 percent shooting last year for a 19-win team.

Nothing was guaranteed for this season, including his contact.

But there?s no doubt the injury hurt his chances. The Cavs kept Mychel Thompson, who had been with the D-League?s Erie BayHawks prior to the Cavs inviting him to camp.

?I?m going to have fun down here and just play,? said Harris, a University of Michigan product. ?I haven?t played a minute because I got hurt. So just playing, I?m good with that.?

Harris said he?s ?getting close? to returning to the floor, but no timetable has been established.

?He has that experience of playing with the Cavs last year. So the nice thing is he should be familiar with everything we do,? Charge head coach Alex Jensen said. ?He?s very dynamic, athletic. Plays hard. He can defend and score.?

Harris was acquired through the D-League?s affiliate player rule Wednesday and injury-waived Thursday to make room for new acquisition Frank Hassell. But the Charge retain Harris? rights, so the move is much like placing him on injured reserve. Harris will be with the Charge for practices, shootarounds and games.

Harris declined to go into detail about the injury. The Plain Dealer has reported that it occurred in late November in a cooling chamber at the Nike facility in Oregon. The chamber is supposed to speed the healing process.

?It was real frustrating,? Harris said about not playing in camp. ?But at the end of the day, you got to look at the situation and say it could have been worse. It was bad, but it ain?t the end of the world. It will be better soon, and I can still get out there and show what I can do.?

Botanists et al freed from Latin, paper

Classifying plants, algae and fungi can now be done in English and online

Web edition : 1:20 pm

Whether Paul Kirk was wearing a pointy party hat at the time, he?s not saying. But as 2012 loomed just a few minutes away, the mycologist cum biosystematist slipped upstairs to his office, logged in to a computer database of fungal names and, as fast as he could after midnight in England, celebrated the new year by publishing the name of a newly discovered fungus.

The coming of 2012 is quite a time to celebrate, or revile, for scientists naming algae, fungi or plants. Starting January 1, the latest revision of the international code governing these names allows two new options: skipping paper publishing and describing key features in English instead of Latin.

?Run for your lives! End of the world!? was the (tongue-in-cheek) title of a 2010 discussion of electronic publishing for nomenclature printed in the journal Taxon by botanist Sandra Knapp at the Natural History Museum in London and colleagues. The main fear has been that species descriptions will be lost as electronic technology whizzes forward. Try reading a floppy disk these days, skeptics moan.

Yet digital archiving by central repositories has become more sophisticated than the box of old floppies, Knapp says. And in July 2011, the international congress that meets every six years to revise the nomenclature code convened in Melbourne, Australia, and voted to accept certain forms of electronic publication.

So Knapp and a colleague seized the day on January 1 with the electronic publication of a new southern African eggplant relative in the genus Solanum in the open access journal PhytoKeys. ?

The big news for nonbotanists, though, may be that through the end of 2011 a major group of taxonomists still had to describe at least the diagnostic traits in Latin for a scientific name to be considered valid.

The requirement to describe a new species in Latin lasted as long as it did ?only because no one speaks it,? says Bill Buck of the New York Botanical Garden. Unlike English, he says, ?Latin is an equal-opportunity discriminator.?

Botanical Latin has become its own language, Knapp says. A standard guide points out that routine phrasing for describing a stem and flowers would read to a classicist as "? stem conspicuously glistening like gold and reaching the age of puberty with the thin metal plates full of kernels, with the medicines made from flowers a little longer than the woman?s apartment ?.?

The move to offer just English as an alternative for descriptive phrases ?raised some eyebrows,? says Brian Schrire of Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in England. Names still must be in Latin, but Schrire predicts more proposals to allow descriptions in other languages.

Something needs to streamline the process of naming, though, he says. Botanists are probably only about halfway through describing the plants on Earth, with roughly 200,000 species described. Yet only about 2,000 names get published a year at the current pace. For the estimated millions of fungi, ?they?ve barely scratched the surface,? Schrire says.

Kirk?s New Year?s nomenclature tests just how far researchers can go these days to bring new species to light. He?s not only publishing electronically, without peer review, but he?s also describing a fungus he has never even seen based just on DNA pulled from a cow effluent fermenter. Happy New Year indeed.

College football: Washington purges defensive coaches

Washington defensive coordinator Nick Holt and two other defensive assistants have been fired two days after the worst defensive performance in Washington history against Baylor in the Alamo Bowl.

The school announced the firing of Holt, linebackers coach Mike Cox and safeties coach Jeff Mills on Saturday. The university says all three had contracts for the 2012 season that will be honored. Holt is to make $650,000.

Washington?s 2011 defense was the worst in school history statistically, capped by giving up 67 points and 777 yards to Baylor in a 67-56 loss in the Alamo Bowl.

Holt has been criticized because of Washington?s defensive decline and the large salary that accompanied his arrival from Southern California before the 2009 season.

Spurrier near record

Steve Spurrier is one of two football coaches to win 10 games in a season at South Carolina. With a victory against Nebraska on Monday in the Capital One Bowl, he would become the first to win 11 games at a school that has been playing football for 118 seasons.

?We probably mention it every other word, ?Get the 11th win, get the 11th win,?? spur Damario Jeffery said. ?That?s all we talk about right now. We really want it real bad. [Spurrier] probably wants it more than anybody else. That?ll be a great thing for his legacy to say he turned the program around.?

Joe Morrison coached the Gamecocks to a 10-2 record in 1984.
