Gophers football: Season opener clinched in three OTs

The Gophers' Donnell Kirkwood rushes against the UNLV defense. (Associated Press: David Becker)

LAS VEGAS -- Fans showed up. The Gophers didn't for most of their season opener against Nevada-Las Vegas.

But at least they finished it -- after a long, long, long night -- beating the Runnin' Rebels 30-27 in triple overtime on Thursday, Aug. 30.

This was supposed to be the start of MarQueis Gray's "breakout year," as Minnesota coach Jerry Kill put it. But the senior quarterback struggled against arguably the worst team in the Mountain West Conference a year ago.

But Gray's two touchdown passes to John Rabe after regulation helped to erase his mistakes. And kicker Jordan Wettstein sealed Kill's first road victory at Minnesota with a 32-yard field goal in the third OT in front of 16,013 fans at Sam Boyd Stadium.

"Every

time we got that rhythm going we would get a penalty, or I would get to anxious with the ball," Gray said. "That's something I'm going to have to pick up, week in and week out, starting this week when we get into New Hampshire preparation."

Gray completed 17 of 30 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. He also ran 17 times for 68 yards. Wettstein, who beat out Chris Hawthorne for the starting spot in the last few days of fall camp, went 3 for 4 on field goals, including two in the fourth quarter.

"Coach Kill puts us in the situation probably every week," Wettstein said, "so from the snap, the hold, to the kick, to the guys on the (offensive line), it was second nature, I think."

The Gophers' last triple-overtime

game was a 41-35 victory over Miami (Ohio) in 2007. That was their only victory in that 1-11 first season for Tim Brewster.

In Minnesota's first overtime game since 2009, Gray answered an initial UNLV touchdown by hitting Rabe, his senior tight end, for two consecutive scores, from 10 and 25 yards, to take a seven-point lead in the second overtime.

Minnesota's defense blew two opportunities to clinch the victory in the second overtime. The first was on a late hit out of bounds that extended the Rebels' drive. The second was when the secondary left Devante Davis wide open in the corner of the end zone.

The secondary rebounded in the third overtime when Derrick Wells, who had two interceptions in the game, picked off a pass from Nick Sherry to set up the winning field goal.

Kill said the Gophers prepared to defend the pistol and spread offense against UNLV, but the Rebels ran more plays from under center to throw them off.

"You just didn't know," Kill said. "We had to make some adjustments on the fly."

Senior cornerback Troy Stoudermire's fumble on a punt return and subsequent pass interference penalty led to UNLV taking a 10-7 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Tim Cornett with 1:52 left in the third quarter. The Gophers, who had 11 penalties for 86 yards, also were called for a roughing the passer penalty on third down.

Gray began the second half badly missing several deep throws, most notably with freshman Andre McDonald wide open on the right sideline after his defender fell. But just like he did in the first half, Gray responded strong in the ensuing quarter. His 40-yard completion to A.J. Barker put Minnesota in position to tie the game 10-10 on a 32-yard field goal from Wettstein.

Wettstein nailed his third field goal of the game from 21 yards with 5:40 remaining in the fourth quarter. But Minnesota's defense again hurt itself with penalties. Wells was called for a 15-yard horse-collar foul following a 25-yard run by the Rebels, who were able to tie the score again, 13-13, with 2:46 left.

As poorly as he played at times, Gray had a chance to be the hero in regulation on third-and-8 with 49 seconds left. But his throw sailed over Isaac Fruechte, who beat his defender for what could have been a game-winning touchdown.

Luckily, Gray later redeemed himself.

Gray's first big play of the 2012 season was an 18-yard run on the opening drive. Minnesota moved the ball at first about as efficiently as it did last season in a season-ending 27-7 victory over Illinois. There were four plays of 10 yards or longer, including Gray's first completion on a 13-yard pass to freshman K.J. Maye.

But two plays later, Gray badly overthrew Rabe in the end zone. A possession that started with so much promise suddenly ended with an interception on third-and-7 at the UNLV 18-yard line.

The turnover wasn't Gray's fault entirely. It was tipped and snatched out of the air by Rebels linebacker Tim Hasson, who might have scored on the return if Gray hadn't forced him out of bounds. The first-quarter stats for Minnesota's top offensive weapon was 3 for 7 passing for 28 yards. His ineffectiveness contributed to UNLV taking a 3-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Gray completed 5 of 7 passes for 88 yards, including a 39-yard pass to Barker. That set up a 16-yard touchdown run by James Gillum.

There was a reason Kill was frustrated about opening the season on the road for the fourth straight year. He had been 0-6 on the road during a 3-9 season in 2011 that included a 19-17 loss at Southern California.

Bright spots for Minnesota were sacks by Ra'Shede Hageman and D.L. Wilhite and an interception by Brock Vereen that stopped three potential scoring drives for UNLV in the first half. Wells and Stoudermire finished the game with a team-high eight tackles each.

Syria 1st-Hand: A Wanted Activist Restarts His Work from Washington (Williamson)

Michael S. Williamson writes for the Washington Post:

Last Thursday, Rami Nakhla met some friends after work at a Starbucks on Dupont Circle. They sat outside, and the sun glinted off a glass building and lighted their faces.

For months, Nakhla and his friends, Syrian dissidents who in the past year fled the regime of Bashar al-Assad, had lived shrouded in darkness. Now, meeting openly at a cafe in Washington evoked mixed emotions: bemusement, relief and a twinge of survivor?s guilt for being safe when so?many are still in danger.

"If you do anything for yourself, you feel guilty.?.?.?.?You have so many more things to do,? said Nakhla, 29, a political asylee who is working as a program specialist at the?US Institute of Peace. Until last year, he had been a political science student living in an Alawite section of Damascus.

For many asylees who come to the United States, their political engagement dries up as they lose their connections with home and struggle to earn a living. But Washington, with its think tanks and politically engaged expat communities, offers more opportunities for involvement for people like Nakhla, who is still deeply entrenched in the war in Syria.

For eight months, through the auspices of the institute, Nakhla has been putting together "The Day After",?a nongovernmental organization that connects Syrian dissidents worldwide to develop a blueprint for what should happen?once al-Assad is ousted. The NGO is funded mostly by the State Department, with additional funding from some European governments and NGOs.

Nakhla and others on the board of the 50-member organization unveiled the 130-page plan Tuesday at a news conference in Berlin, where the group?s meetings have been held (many of its members live in the Middle East or Europe). The plan offers suggestions on how to address issues often inherent in a regime?s collapse, such as dealing with armed groups, restructuring the economy and reforming the security sector.

It is the kind of public appearance that would have been impossible last summer, when Nakhla was?hiding in Beirut. Syrian intelligence agents were scouring the city for him and threatening ? via e-mail, via Twitter and via Facebook ? to kill him.

Having slipped across the border just before the Syrian uprising began, the Damascus University political science student had become a well-known social media connector for the revolution, feverishly collecting videos, tweets and Skype updates from protesters and disseminating them to the outside world. He subsisted on nicotine and caffeine, flitting from one apartment to another, as recalled by fellow activists and a Washington Post reporter who visited him at the time.

One by one, his activist friends were arrested. Last August, he said, he was tipped off that Syrian government agents were closing in. He contacted the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, where he had already applied for asylum, and it spirited him out of Lebanon.

First graduating class creating chemistry for University of Rio Grande

by Staff Report
mdtnews@mydailytribune.com
Pomeroy Daily Sentinel

RIO GRANDE ? The Chemistry Department at the University of Rio Grande is preparing for a first ? a graduating class of chemistry majors from a program created three years ago.

?Being part of the first graduating class didn?t mean much to me then. It does now,? Sheri Marcum, a senior said. ?I really had a lot of doubt about whether or not I could do this.?

Like the experiments students must conduct in their classes, the process of creating and delivering a new major uncovered the unexpected.

?I think students underestimate the power they have to impact a program,? said Jacob White, Ph.D., associate professor of chemistry. ?They?ve each contributed to the program in their own way. There is always that opportunity at Rio.?

An unexpected turn

Dr. White said when the Chemistry Department decided to offer a major, the plan was simple: sophomores use research templates; juniors meet in the middle in a ?bridge? format; and seniors do original research.

The Provost?s Academic Excellence Initiative at Rio changed that plan. The grant affords student funding to work on special projects with their professors. In this case, the Chemistry Department leaders decided that the students would complete an experiment and present at the Ohio Academy of Science Annual Meeting. Nobody from the Rio Chemistry Department had ever presented at this prestigious meeting before.

?This peer review process is pretty intense,? John Means, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry, explained. ?The students were put through the ringer.?

In order to present at the Ohio Academy of Science Annual Meeting, students must provide original research. One year ahead of schedule, the junior chemistry majors were challenged beyond their expectations and would have to deal with a change in plans.

?The students dove into the deep-end of the original research pool,? Dr. White said.

A calming force

Marcum is used to stress.

?My children are older than my classmates,? she said when talking about her age.

For years, Marcum worked as a lab technician and although she was doing higher-level work could not receive a promotion without a four-year degree.

?I like a good challenge, and if you want a good challenge, further your education,? she said.

So Marcum enrolled at Rio majoring in chemistry. At one point, Marcum worked overnight, took a nap in the morning and went to class in the middle of the day. White and Means both said Marcum?s professional experience helped guide the entire department through the research and experimentation phase of their proposals. But Marcum just saw this as another day?s work.

?In the lab, it?s feast or famine,? she said.

A thorough review

Marcum said each student created an individual presentation, but all of her classmates offered a helping hand. After a peer review, all four abstracts received an invitation to present at the Ohio Academy of Science Annual Meeting.

?Pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone and being equal to others from different universities, it was a great sense of pride that you met the challenge,? Marcum said.

Not only was this the first time anyone from the Rio Chemistry Program presented in front of this statewide audience, they had just seven weeks to prepare when other universities had the entire academic year.

?We are extremely proud of these students,? Means said. ?Things changed on the fly for them and they adapted quickly.?

A bright future

Experiments don?t always go as planned and, as he looks to the future, White says his biggest challenge is trying to find a way to top last year?s success.

?It was even more of a transformative experience than we had hoped for,? he said. ?We could see the students? confidence levels increase tremendously. That?s a gratifying experience.?

So, too, will watching the four students who walked into class three years ago experience one final year together. In May 2013, they will become the first graduating class of the newly redesigned Chemistry Program at the University of Rio Grande.

?Many think chemistry is unattainable if you?re out of school for a certain time, but the main thing is you have to be willing to work hard,? Means said. ?If you set your mind to it and have the desire to work hard, it?s quite attainable.?

?Furthering your education pays for itself in the long run,? Marcum agreed. ?By far.?

Bernanke signals desire for more Fed stimulus

US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke expressed deep worry over the US economy and unemployment Friday, sending a strong signal that he wants the central bank to take fresh action to stimulate growth.

Warning that stagnation in the labor market was "a grave concern," Bernanke defended the Fed's interventions of the past four years and signaled he would be pushing for more help for the economy when the Fed's policy board meets in 12 days.

"The economic situation is obviously far from satisfactory," he said in the keynote speech of the Fed's annual conference of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

"Growth in recent quarters has been tepid, and so, not surprisingly, we have seen no net improvement in the unemployment rate since January," he said.

"Unless the economy begins to grow more quickly than it has recently, the unemployment rate is likely to remain far above levels consistent with maximum employment for some time."

Bernanke made clear that the jobless rate, stuck around 8.3 percent, the sharp fall in labor market participation in the past four years, and long-term joblessness are some of his biggest worries.

"The stagnation of the labor market in particular is a grave concern not only because of the enormous suffering and waste of human talent it entails, but also because persistently high levels of unemployment will wreak structural damage on our economy that could last for many years," he said.

In a firm statement, Bernanke said the Fed will take additional action "as needed" to strengthen growth and boost job creation.

Markets liked the news, with oil prices climbing steadily.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 90.13 points (0.69 percent), closing at 13,090.84.

The broad-based S&P 500 rose 7.10 (0.51 percent) to 1,406.58, while the tech-rich Nasdaq climbed 18.25 (0.60 percent) to 3,066.96.

Bond prices climbed sharply too, with the yield on the 10-year Treasury bond falling to 1.56 percent from 1.62 percent Thursday.

Bernanke, whose easy money policies have been criticized by conservative politicians including Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, delivered a lengthy defense of the Fed's actions since the financial crisis.

He said that efforts to drive down long-term interest rates through "quantitative easing" (QE) bond purchase operations and other programs had boosted economic output by three percent and added more than two million jobs "relative to what otherwise would have occurred.

He warned, as he has over much of the past year, that Fed action is not a panacea for policy action from political leaders.

Besides heavy spending cuts by federal and local governments, he said the economy has been held back by partisan battles over raising the debt ceiling and the looming "fiscal cliff" policy -- a poison-pill budget law from last year that could force a sharp contraction in the economy beginning on January 1 if not changed.

"Policymakers should take care to avoid a sharp near-term fiscal contraction that could endanger the recovery," Bernanke said.

Economists said Bernanke's comments raised the likelihood that he could garner support for fresh action in the Federal Open Market Committee's September 12-13 meeting -- whether more firm signaling of Fed intent on keeping interest rates low over the next few years, or a third QE program.

"The Fed chairman's Jackson Hole speech was clearly consistent with more Fed easing, although not definitive," said Jim O'Sullivan of High Frequency Economics.

"At a minimum, we expect officials to extend their forward guidance on the near-zero funds rate at the September meeting, with a slightly better than 50 percent chance that a new asset purchase program -- i.e. QE3 -- will be announced then as well," O'Sullivan said.

Not all were as bullish, noting the resistance to a QE3 in the FOMC and the still-mixed signals from data.

"We continue to anticipate a 'verbal easing' through extension of the Fed funds guidance, but do not anticipate quantitative easing at this juncture," said Joseph LaVorgna of Deutsche Bank.

Moreover, a QE3 launch risks political fallout as the battle for the White House, largely focused on the economy under President Barack Obama, intensifies ahead of the November 6 vote.

Obama's rival Romney said last week that he disapproved of the Fed's recent work and that he would seek to replace Bernanke if he wins the presidency.

"I don't think QE2 was terribly effective. I think a QE3, another Fed stimulus, is not going to help this economy. I think that's the wrong way to go," Romney said.
