Google planning cheaper Nexus 7, report claims

Google may be aiming for a Nexus 7 that is priced below $149 and eventually as low as $99.

Google is planning low-ball itself with an even cheaper Nexus 7, according to an Asia-based report.

Google and Asus wowed consumers with the $199 Nexus 7 and now they're aiming at price points below $150, ultimately going as low as $99, according to Taipei-based Digitimes, citing sources at display component maker O-Film Tech.

The lower-priced Nexus 7 should be released by the second quarter of next year, said the technology site, which covers device manufacturers and component suppliers in Asia.

O-Film started shipping components for the lower-priced Nexus 7 in December 2012, the report said. The company's touch-screen glass-glass film technology will contribute to lower production costs and make it thinner, Digitimes said.

The cost-reduction measures could eventually lead to a $99 Nexus 7 but this may not happen initially. The cheaper Nexus 7 may first be priced in the $129 to $149 range, according to the report.

Shipment estimates of the new Nexus 7 are in the range of 500,000 to 600,000 in the first quarter of shipments.

Needless to say, a Nexus 7 priced below $150 and eventually going to $99 would make Google's tablet even more competitively priced against the $329 iPad Mini -- even allowing for the high-quality build that Apple typically achieves with its tablets.

And, as always, this Digitimes report is coming from the supply chain, which can be very unpredictable. Orders for an unconfirmed new component or new product can be canceled at any time.

Google and Asus are currently shipping about one million Nexus 7 devices per month, according to recent statements from Asus executives.

A cheaper Nexus 7 might give consumers pause when considering the iPad Mini.

Birdsong bluster may dupe strange females, but it won't fool partners

Wednesday, December 19, 2012

Male birds use their song to dupe females they have just met by pretending they are in excellent physical condition.

Just as some men try to cast themselves in a better light when they approach would-be dates, so male birds in poor condition seek to portray that they are fitter than they really are. But males do not even try to deceive their long-term partners, who are able to establish the true condition of the male by their song.

Researchers at the University of Exeter studied zebra finches to establish how trustworthy birdsong was in providing honest signals about the male's value as a mate. Singing is a test of the condition of birds because it uses a lot of energy. Fit and healthy birds are thought to be able to sustain a high song rate for longer, making them more attractive to females.

The research team, which included scientists from the Universit? de Bourgogne in France, looked at short and longer encounters with unknown females, as well as patterns of song around females who were familiar to them.

The team discovered that males in poor condition could "cheat" and vary their song to give a false impression to stranger females. But they did not even try to fool those who knew them, who used song as a reliable test of their underlying qualities. The research is published on December 19 in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Dr Sasha Dall, of the University of Exeter, was involved in the research. He said: "Every man wants to cast himself in a favourable light when he meets an attractive female, and we have shown that birds are no different. But just like many humans, it seems zebra finch males are unable to dupe females who know them well enough. When the birds were in an established relationship, the female could tell the true condition of a male by his song, and judge whether he would make a good father for her next brood."

Zebra finches are Australia's most popular finch. They make common pets and are widely used in scientific research. They are particularly easy to keep, and adapt extremely well to their surroundings. For zebra finches, both colour and birdsong are important factors in choosing a mate.

The research was funded through a young researcher prize of the Bettencourt-Schueller Foundation for life sciences and a PhD grant, as well as two honorific master grants provided by the Conseil R?gional de Bourgogne in France.

The team studied 91 male and 91 female birds from a colony at the Universit? de Bourgogne and 12 of each gender from a colony at the University of Exeter. The body condition of each of the birds was measured. Scientists then videoed both brief and longer encounters between birds of each gender who were unknown to each other, and patterns of behaviour when they were with their mate, with whom they pair for life. They were also monitored to see if they showed signs of mutual attraction and going on to breed.

In the study, there was no difference in the singing of male single birds in either short or long encounters with unknown females. But, when in front of their partners, paired birds who were in good condition sang at a higher rate than those in poor condition.

Dr Morgan David, who led the research, said: "This is the first study to find evidence that the link between male body condition and birdsong differs depending on the context of the encounter with the opposite sex. It could have significant implications for learning more about the evolution of courtship patterns such as birdsong."

Barcelona coach Vilanova has 2nd throat operation

By JOSEPH WILSON

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:00 a.m. ET Dec. 20, 2012

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova underwent throat surgery on Thursday to treat the reappearance of a tumor on a saliva gland.

The Spanish club said his progress will mark his hospital stay, and his doctors were maintaining their plans of treating Vilanova with chemotherapy and radiotherapy for up to six weeks.

Barcelona captain Carles Puyol said "the operation went well."

Barcelona made the announcement that Vilanova had fallen ill again on Wednesday.

The club said Vilanova might be able to return to the sidelines while continuing his treatment. It did not provide a timetable for his return.

In the meantime, Vilanova's assistant coach, Jordi Roura, has taken over training and will coach the team for Saturday's Spanish league game at Valladolid. Roura has been on Barcelona's coaching staff since 2009.

"Yesterday was a hard day, but (Vilanova) came to the dressing room and explained everything to us and boosted our spirits," Puyol said. "He hadn't even left yet and he was saying he couldn't wait to be back. Today we feel better because the news is good.

"We have to keep playing the same way, train as hard as we can, (and) look forward to (Vilanova's) return."

Puyol said the club's decision to let Roura take over for now was the correct one.

"He has been working with us for years. He knows the team perfectly," Puyol said. "Our way of doing things won't change. We are in good hands."

The 44-year-old Vilanova had surgery to remove a tumor from a saliva gland in November 2011 when he was Pep Guardiola's assistant at the club.

Vilanova had chemotherapy and radiotherapy at that time and returned to the squad in 15 days, ahead of schedule.

He took over for Guardiola at the end of last season after five seasons as his assistant, four with the first team and one with the B team.

Under Vilanova's guidance, Barcelona has made its best ever start to a season, winning a Spanish record 15 of its first 16 league games. The club leads the standings with 46 points, nine ahead of Atletico Madrid and 13 in front of defending champion Real Madrid.

Barcelona is also the favorite for this season's Champions League. On Thursday, Barcelona drew AC Milan in the first knockout round. The opening leg of their two-game tie will be played in Italy on Feb. 20.

The announcement of Vilanova's ailment on Wednesday coincided with the return of defender Eric Abidal to his first team practice since undergoing a liver transplant eight months before.

Previously, Abidal had to have a liver tumor removed in March 2011, but he made a speedy recovery before it was discovered that he needed the transplant.

Puyol said Abidal's second return was a boost, especially with the health of their coach again in doubt.

"These are always tough blows. You are never prepared," Puyol said. "The example of Abi, who can already play again, gives strength to the entire group."

Revisiting Top Health and Travel Trends in 2012 | Spa Balance

This month, we are featuring a series of posts where we will look at the most important trends surrounding the spa and wellness industries. In particular, we will discuss the trends that defined our industry in 2012 as well as those that are likely to shape the future of it in 2013.

In the following lines, we will revisit the top 10 health and travel trends in 2012 to see what really happened this year. We will use as a reference point some of the predictions provided last year by an article posted on the Health and Fitness Travel site: Top Wellness Travel Trends for 2012. Let?s see which trend predictions turned out to be accurate this year.

?

Spa and Culture

Health and Fitness Travel was right on target with this prediction. Today, more and more spas are getting very creative in terms of offering something different and authentic. It is very rare, in fact, to see a spa treatment menu without an indigenous treatment on it.

?

Bootcamp for the Soul

People want to be healthy in a nice looking environment and without having to resort to the bootcamp way of doing things. The search for a ?gentler approach? has become a top priority amongst spa goers. This trend was definitely accurate.

?

Age Adapted Spas

There has been a significant increase in the way spas are jumping on the opportunity to cater for the ageing baby boomer. This concept has taken advantage of the new synergies the spa industry is forging with the health field as well as our increasing desire to cater to the actual socio-demographics in both developed and developing countries.

?

Holidaying with Health Gurus

With the regular consumer getting more health and spa savvy, ?more people want to receive dedicated support and guidance from the best in the industry.? The spa industry has embraced this reality and we see more spas connecting health benefits with the services they provide.

?

Nutrition as a Foundation

Considering nutrition is the base of any wellness programme, we see this trend as something that will continue to take importance in the future. This trend is closely linked with the increasing health-related, innovative and holistic approach several spas are embracing around the world.

?

Health and Fitness Consultations

We can now see the rising of the lifestyle spa concept. Again, the comprehensive approach taken by several spas is helping the customer to take advantage of tailour-made programmes capable of delivering results for very specific lifestyle goals.

?

Social Spa-ing

This prediction gained lots of room this year. More and more spas are bringing together the intimate and social aspect. Socialising activities such as communal bathing and cleansing became a major trend in our industry and we expect this to continue in 2013.

?

Healthy Ageing

The closer our industry gets to the health field, the bigger the room for our industry to seize this business opportunity. Considering today?s 50+ travelers are no longer concerned about reducing wrinkles but rather about ?health enhancement and disease prevention,? those spas capable of offering these kinds of services will consolidate this trend as a prosperous niche in our industry.

?

Family wellness

As more families continue to search for wellness holidays, where parents enjoy spa treatments while their children stay active and eat healthy, we may well see a significant gain next year in these kinds of family packages. One of the most important benefits the spa industry can obtain from this trend relies on the fact that it provides an early exposure to the future generation of spa goers. Similarly, it offers a great opportunity for dealing with obesity-related problems. By encouraging healthy eating amongst younger visitors, family wellness could play an important role in the fight against obesity.

?

Health concerns

People are becoming increasingly concerned about the negative effects provoked by current health issues such as obesity and stress. Consequently, more and more spas are currently offering holistic treatments aimed at tackling health related problems caused by poor lifestyle routines. As people continue to embrace healthier lifestyles, this trend will continue to grow in the future.

?

As we have seen, 2012 was a prosperous, dynamic year for the spa industry. The trends that were predicted at the beginning of the year were met by the spa industry thanks to its increasing commitment to comprehensive approaches based on innovation, prevention and health enhancement. All things considered, this commitment is by itself the biggest trend that defined our industry in 2012 and the one that will continue to shape our future next year.
