Atlanta Falcons Drop Idea of New Stadium at Historic Church Site; Says It's 'Unfeasible'

  • (Photo:Facebook/Friendship Baptist Church)

Friendship Baptist Church is Atlanta's oldest black church, dating back to 150 years.

July 31, 2013|4:59 pm

"Atlanta Falcons Stadium Company (StadCo) today notified the Georgia World Congress Center Authority (GWCCA) that it has determined that development and construction of the New Stadium Project on the south site is not feasible at this time for a number of reasons, including that the Mount Vernon Baptist Church and the Friendship Baptist Church properties and other necessary parcels have not been acquired, and that StadCo has been unable to complete environmental and other required testings on these properties," said the Falcons in a statement released on Monday.

Both Friendship Baptist Church and Mount Vernon Baptist Church stand in the way of the desired land where the Falcons had hoped to build their new stadium. Last month, The Christian Post?reported?that FBC asked Atlanta's mayor for $24.5 million to sell their church to the city and negotiations were simultaneously underway for Mount Vernon, which sits directly across from FBC. However, city officials agreed to move on to the north site if an agreement was not reached by August.

But when CP contacted FBC, Lloyd Hawk, chairman of the board of trustees of FBC, said that "there was a miscommunication in the message delivered to us and that was corrected."

"Friendship is still in negotiations with the city and the Atlanta Falcons regarding the proposed new stadium site," he asserted. "The negotiations are positive and ongoing."

Initially, the south site was considered an option for the stadium at the request of city officials even though the Falcons favored the north site. According to Atlanta-based Fox affiliate, WAGA-TV, the new proposed location faces a few challenges before any decision can be made, including contaminated soil under a parking lot and several overhead power lines that would be removed. The GWCCA recently voted to allow the Falcons to begin soil testing and other studies on the north site in order to proceed with negotiations as the team hopes the new stadium can be debuted in time for the 2017 football season.

"We are going to turn attention to the north side and start working through the feasibility analysis of the north," said GWCCA Executive Director Frank Poe, according to WAGA-TV.

Although the north site has only recently been chosen as a default location, there is already opposition in place from surrounding neighbors and from people who object the proposed stadium's inaccessibility to the nearest metro rail station.

"The neighborhoods are adamantly against the north site. There is a consensus I'd like to put positively in favor of the south site," said Mike Koblentz of the Norwest Community Alliance in Atlanta, according to WAGA-TV.

If negotiations with the north site proceed any further, Hawk told CP that FBC will remain unfazed.

"We will continue to serve God in this community as we have for the last 151 years wherever the stadium is located," said Hawk.

Reports: Major League Baseball Warns Players' Union Of Suspensions

According to several news reports, Major League Baseball has given the players union a list of those facing suspensions because of doping.

In truth, this is another pit stop in the long march toward what is rumored to be the suspension of some of baseball's A-listers. Of course, the biggest target is rumored to be Alex Rodriguez.

CBS News reports that the Major League Baseball Players' Association told them A-Rod was among the players facing suspensions, but that he was one of a "number of players." Negotiations with the union, CBS reports, means any announcement is still "a ways off."

CBS explains:

"However, the big fish in the investigation, Alex Rodriguez, he of the $275 million contract, has been confirmed by CBS News to be on the list of players to be suspended that was handed to the MLBPA. Statistically, 'A-Rod' is among the best the game has ever seen: The three-time MVP has hit 647 home runs (fifth on the all-time list) and his 1,950 runs batted in rank seventh in baseball history.

"But MLB is threatening to suspend him, or even ban him for life, over allegations he was involved with a now-closed Florida clinic accused of peddling performance enhancing drugs, reports CBS News correspondent Terrell Brown."

The New York Times' story on the matter today is all about the posturing on both sides. A-Rod and Major League Baseball, the paper reports, are not actively negotiating a resolution, so they've taken their respective cases to the airwaves.

A-Rod's people say he will fight any potential punishment, while MLB wants Rodriguez to the follow the footsteps of Ryan Braun.

As we reported, Braun, the National League's 2011 Most Valuable Player, admitted to wrongdoing and accepted a suspension for the rest of the 2013 season.

The New York Daily News, which has a good track record on this story, says its sources unnamed, as you might expect say Rodriguez and eight other players will be suspended. (That number had been previously rumored to be 20.)

The Daily News reports:

"Most of the players will be suspended for 50 games, but some including the Yankees' embattled superstar face stiffer penalties for lying to MLB investigators or interfering in baseball's year-long Biogenesis investigation.

"Not all of the players linked to Biogenesis in media reports face discipline, sources have told The News. Two former Yankees Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera and Oakland A's pitcher Bartolo Colon will not be punished because they already have been suspended as a result of their links to Biogenesis and its owner, self-styled 'biochemist' Anthony Bosch."

O2 to launch 4G in the UK by end of August - but without iPhone 5

O2 is set to become the UK's second 4G operator after announcing that it will launch its LTE network in three cities by the end of the month with more to come.

O2's 4G network operates in the 800MHz spectrum and will launch on 29 August in London, Leeds and Bradford with tarriffs starting at ?26 a month.

O2 will be the first operator to go up against the UK?s sole nationwide 4G network, EE,?which in June had half a million subscribers and covers about 55 percent of the population.?

EE's?entry level SIM-only price is ?21 per month for 500MB of data, while the more realistic 1GB deal on EE costs??26 per month.?O2 hasn't revealed what's included in its ?26 plan yet and?notably missing from its lineup of supported 4G devices is Apple's iPhone 5, which uses the 1800MHz spectrum band, rather than O2's 800MHz. The list of supported phones are here.?

In February O2 paid ?550m to secure 2x10MHz of 880MHz spectrum, the band that is considered best for delivering wider coverage, which came with an obligation to provide 4G coverage to 98 percent of the population by 2017. The spectrum was released in May and fully cleared by regulator Ofcom this week.?

O2 plans to switch on 4G in 13 cities by the end of the year, including Birmingham, Newcastle, Glasgow, Liverpool, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry, Sheffield, Manchester and Edinburgh.

Three, BT subsidiary Niche Spectrum Ventures and Vodafone also secured spectrum in the UK's 4G spectrum auctions earlier this year, which raised ?2.3bn.?

Vodafone and Three plan on launching 4G networks this year, while BT has signed a 10 year deal with O2 to support its 4G network once went live.

Althout Three UK has not launched its 4G network yet, it will be pricing its 4G in the same way as Three in Sweden and Denmark by offering it where avaiable to all 3G customers at no extra charge. ???
