?bigimpactsm1 Big Impact Social Media Marketing for Small Businesses Part I One to Many

Small businesses play a vital role in any capitalist economy. They create jobs for citizens, pump out innovative products and offer services that are integral in the success of our society. You know your small business is important, now you?ve just got to find a way to tell everyone else that. One of the biggest challenges of any small business owner is getting your name out there. With the proliferation of social media and a new-found appreciation for buying local, spreading the word about your small business on a limited budget has become more feasible within the last few years. Having success with these marketing avenues is simply a matter of learning the tricks and putting in the time.

A Social Network for Every Small Business

Social media is fast becoming the most efficient way for small businesses to reach a large, targeted audience. With a vast selection of social networks to choose from, any business can find the perfect network or combination of social networks to promote their unique business.

Facebook

Facebook continues to dominate the social scene with recent data showing over 955 million users. Small businesses shouldn?t be intimidated by this incredibly vast user base, but rather embrace it and take advantage of the targeting capabilities available to you within Facebook. Facebook provides you with powerful user data, so that you can funnel your message to the people who will find it the most relevant.

Facebook Ads

Small businesses can benefit from Facebook?s ad platform to promote their brand and generate a buzz surrounding their latest promotion. Facebook ads allows you to narrow down your target audience by demographics, profession, and interests. Facebook ads are perfect for small businesses with a relatively small marketing budget because they allow you to set your campaign budget, and it runs on a pay per click system so you only pay when people are clicking on your ad.

Facebook Events

Planning events is simple with Facebook. It allows you to create the invitation and write the guest list in one fowl swoop. Once you?ve hashed out all the details and sent the invitation, you can track RSVPs and give updates about the event.

Tell Your Story

One of the reasons people feel so compelled to support small businesses is that behind every small company, there?s usually a pretty compelling story to be told. Small business owners all started with passion and found a way to turn their dream into reality. Facebook Timeline allows businesses to map out their journey from fantasy to fruition. Try not to think of your Facebook page as merely a ?profile? but rather a blank canvas on which you can paint a picture of your brand?s unique and inspiring story.

Twitter

Twitter is a great platform for interacting with your customer base. Keep followers informed about the latest happenings at your company and listen to valuable feedback by monitoring the conversation taking place around your brand. Twitter has become a means for customers to express their opinions about brands, both positive and negative, as well as seek out advice and business referrals. It?s very common to come across a tweet along the lines of:

?Going to Door County this weekend. Anyone know of a good place to grab dinner??

or

?Pretty weak room service at @ABChotel?waited over an hour for food!?

Keep an eye out for tweets like these so that you can be there to do damage control if necessary or to recommend your business to an inquiring potential customer.

Pinterest

Pinterest is the latest craze on the social media scene. It?s visual, it?s interactive, and best of all, it?s viral. Popular pins spread like wildfire and help to drive traffic to your website and ultimately bring you business. Small businesses with some type of visual component to their company (such as a retail product, design or photography) can benefit immensely from incorporating Pinterest into their small business marketing strategy. Use Pinterest to show off your product lines, portfolio and your corporate culture. Allow followers to contribute to your boards and develop relationships with your followers by re-pinning their pins whenever possible.

Email Marketing

Another way small businesses can reach a large, targeted audience is through email marketing. Email allows you to push information out to people who want to know what?s new with your business. Launch a monthly e-newsletter campaign to inform customers of promotions, new products and services, and exciting events happening at your company.

Blogging

Blogging is another great big impact marketing tool for small businesses to implement. Not only does it enable businesses to spread their message to a large audience, it also helps drive traffic to your website and gives you a platform to establish yourself as a thought leader. Blogging gives your business a human voice and shows consumers that you are the expert in your industry. Update your blog regularly with how-to posts, industry news, useful tips and new product offerings.

A big impact?marketing plan is going to look different for every small business. Depending on variables like target market, product or service offering and marketing objectives, the solution will involve a different mix of tools and strategies. Stay tuned for next week?s Big Impact Social Media Marketing blog post to learn about location-based strategies for marketing your small business.

Watch a flying reverse triangle choke (VIDEO)

Canadian fighter Wolfgang Janssen doesn't have a nickname. Perhaps he doesn't have because his name is Wolfgang Janssen, and a nickname is not necessary. Perhaps it's because he can do stuff like this, and now will be known as the guy who won by a flying reverse triangle.

Janssen is an undefeated featherweight with all three wins by submission.

Thanks, MMA Fighting.

Mandela 'much better,' but will remain hospitalized

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Nelson Mandela, South Africa's 94-year-old former president, is "looking much better" after being treated for a lung infection and gallstones, but will remain in hospital for the time being, the government said on Tuesday.

The country's first black president was admitted to a Pretoria hospital on December 8 after being flown from his home village of Qunu in a remote part of the Eastern Cape province.

He was treated initially for a recurrent lung infection and then had a successful procedure to have gallstones removed.

Mandela, who came to power in historic elections in 1994 after decades struggling against apartheid, remains a symbol of resistance to racism and injustice at home and around the world.

Presidency spokesman Mac Maharaj said he had visited Mandela on Tuesday. "He is looking much better," he said in a statement, adding that the Nobel Peace laureate had spoken to him.

Doctors were satisfied with his progress, Maharaj said.

"They say there is no crisis, but add that they are in no hurry to send him home just yet."

Maharaj said that, given his advanced age, Mandela needed "extraordinary care". "If he spends more days in hospital, it is because that necessary care is being provided," he added.

He said Mandela would remain in hospital until doctors were "satisfied that he has made sufficient progress".

Reporting their conversation, Maharaj said Mandela asked him: "'Mac, what are you doing here?"

"I asked him not to give doctors any trouble," he added.

Mandela spent 27 years in apartheid prisons, including 18 years on the windswept Robben Island off Cape Town.

He was released in 1990 and went on to use his prestige to push for reconciliation between whites and blacks as the bedrock of the post-apartheid "Rainbow Nation".

He stepped down in 1999 after one term in office and has been largely removed from public life for the last decade.

Mandela spent time in a Johannesburg hospital in 2011 with a respiratory condition, and again in February this year because of abdominal pains. He was released the following day after a keyhole examination showed there was nothing serious.

He has since spent most of his time in Qunu.

His fragile health prevents him from making any public appearances in South Africa, although he has continued to receive high-profile domestic and international visitors, including former U.S. president Bill Clinton in July.

Keystone XL oil pipeline hits snag in Texas

A judge in Texas has ordered that TransCanada Corp., the company behind the building of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, must stop work on a stretch of the line that will run beneath property owned by Michael Bishop for two weeks, due to that man?s challenge of the pipeline?s intentions.

By CER News Desk,?Guest blogger / December 18, 2012

Michael Bishop poses in this December 2012 file photo, with a pair of flags flying in protest of the planned Keystone XL pipeline, near the entrance to his property south of Douglass, Texas, which is directly in the path of the project. The stretch of pipeline that connects the American network with the bitumen source in the Canadian oil sands is still awaiting approval from the American government.

A judge in the southern state has ordered that TransCanada Corp., the company behind the building of the continent-spanning oil pipeline, must stop work on a stretch of the line that will run beneath property owned by Michael Bishop for two weeks, due to that man?s challenge of the pipeline?s intentions.?(Read More:?Obama Under Increasing Pressure to Make Keystone XL Decision)

While the documents Bishop signed allowing TransCanada to use his property for the line specifies that the pipes can carry crude oil, there is no mention of bitumen, the semi-solid form of petroleum that originates in Canada?s oil sands. Bitumen must be diluted or heated in order to liquify it for transport, requiring different pressure levels than the simple transport of liquid crude ? something that Bishop says is not mentioned in the contract he signed with the company.

For its part, TransCanada suggests that the temporary restraining order issued by the judge is not a long-term concern.?

Samsung Won't Seek Injunctions Against Apple Devices in European Countries

Following yesterday's ruling by U.S District Judge Lucy Koh that rejected Apple's motion for a ban on the sale of three older Samsung devices still being sold in the U.S. that infringed on the company's iPhone-related patents, Samsung has decided to withdraw all of its requests for injunctions against Apple products currently pending in European courts.

According to this Bloomberg report Samsung has decided to drop its push for injunctions in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the U.K. While the company may be backing off of that legal action, it will continue to seek damages in all of those patent disputes.

Samsung said in a statement that its decision was made "in the interest of protecting consumer choice." Some speculate that the move could have something to do with?a European Union investigation into whether Samsung had violated any laws in regard to standards essential patents. Companies that control standards essential patents are obligated by law to license them to other phone makers at a reasonable price.
