PARIS ? France's Socialists are hailing a move by New York prosecutors to drop their attempted rape case against Dominique Strauss-Kahn, after a stormy two months for the ex-IMF chief and for the French presidential race.
Socialist Party chief Martine Aubry called it "an immense relief" that the prosecutors asked a judge to put an end to the case based on concerns about the accuser's credibility.
Aubry said on France-Info radio Tuesday, "we were all waiting for this ... for him to finally be able to get out of this nightmare."
Before his arrest in May, Strauss-Kahn was seen as the Socialists' leading contender for next year's French presidential elections. His image has been darkened by the attempted rape accusations and he is no longer expected to run.
