The major averages are each in positive territory and near session highs. The averages have been in drift mode since the open, but their direction has been upward. The economic data released today has helped fuel optimism that the economy may be improving. New home sales were reported in line with expectations, but they have shown improvement over the last three months. The same can be said for yesterday?s jobless claims data, which has also shown an improving trend. Analysts have said that the housing market will improve when the jobs picture improves, and vice-versa, and the positive trends in both have given a hint of optimism about 2012... ECONOMIC EVENTS: Durable goods orders for the month of November rose 3.8%, versus the expected increase of 2.2%. The core reading, which excludes transportation items, was up 0.3%, versus the expected increase of 0.4%. Personal income rose 0.1%, versus the expected increase of 0.2%, and personal spending rose 0.1%, versus the expected increase of 0.3%. New home sales increased 1.6% in November, resulting in an annual run rate of 315K units... MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers were Rambus (RMBS), after signing a patent license agreement with Broadcom (BRCM), and SunPower (SPWR), after Total (TOT) agreed to buy 18.6M shares of its stock at $8.80 per share as part of Sunpower's agreement to acquire Total's subsidiary Tenesol. Noteworthy losers included United Continental (UAL), after the company provided a Q4 update, and Allot Communications (ALLT), following a Bloomberg report that alleged the company was selling electronic surveillance equipment to Iran through a Danish distributor... INDICES: Near noon, the Dow was up 76.03, or 0.62%, to 12,245.68; the Nasdaq was up 11.65, or 0.45%, to 2,611.10; and the S&P 500 was up 7.40, or 0.59%, to 1,261.40. :theflyonthewall.com |
