The University of Colorado has chosen Texas Rangers president Rick George to be its next athletic director. The Daily Camera first reported the decision earlier today.

George agreed to a five-year contract with CU, though his salary was not revealed. He won't begin work in Boulder until Aug. 12. He has worked as an executive in the sports world for three decades and has been with the Rangers since 2010.

?I am honored to be selected as director of intercollegiate athletics at CU-Boulder,? George in a release posted on the athletic department's website. ?CU is a special place for my family and me, and this is a marvelous opportunity at a great university in the best collegiate athletic conference in the country. I am looking forward to getting back to CU to begin working at this great institution.?
.
Former CU athletic director Mike Bohn was forced out of the job in late May after eight years leading the department.

Chancellor Phil DiStefano said he wanted to find someone who will run the department more like a business and improve fundraising. The department is mired in debt mostly accumulated through three football coaching changes in seven seasons and the move from the Big 12 Conference to the Pac-12.

?I am delighted that Rick has accepted our offer to lead our athletic department,? said DiStefano. ?Rick's financial and management acumen, his networking and relationship development skills, and his enthusiasm, work ethic and principled leadership all make him the ideal leader for CU athletics at this important and challenging moment in our history.?

George spent nearly five years at Colorado (1987-91) as director of football operations under former coach Bill McCartney.

?He's a dynamo,? McCartney told the Camera earlier this summer. ?He's a star. He's got a spirit about him. He doesn't have a bad day.?

McCartney and others credit George for helping to recruit some of the key members of the 1990 national championship team and other star players of the early 1990s.

George left CU in 1991 to become an assistant athletic director at Vanderbilt. He later moved from Vanderbilt to a executive roles with a children's charity, the Champions Tour, the PGA Tour and the Rangers.

George worked for seven years with the PGA Tour and Champions Tour. His final two years in pro golf he served as executive vice president and Chief of Operations for the PGA, essentially overseeing all aspects of the tour.

One of his primary accomplishments in his time with pro golf was increasing revenue and sponsorships during his time as president of the Champions Tour.

George has not responded to multiple requests for an interview from the Daily Camera in the past six weeks.
