Primeval Underwater Forest Discovered in Gulf of Mexico ? The owner of a Gulf of Mexico dive shop learned about an underwater forest after being told by a local fisherman that there was some unusual fish and wildlife activity. Experts suggest that this forest was uncovered by Hurricane Katrina. The dive shop owner refused to reveal the location for many years because of the destructive nature of some divers. In 2012, though, he brought it to the attention of Ben Raines, the executive director of the non profit Weeks Bay Foundation.? LiveScience via io9
The forest contains trees so well-preserved that when they are cut, they still smell like fresh Cypress sap, Raines said.
J.K. Rowling?s New Book: Pseudonym Revealed on Crime Novel ? Over the weekend, the Sunday Times in the UK revealed that a debut crime novelist?s book ?The Cuckoo?s Calling? was written by none other than JK Rowling using the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. Whether the Times had been tipped to this by someone inside Rowling?s camp is currently unknown. Prior to the reveal of this news, Rowling?s book had sold around 1500 copies and some speculate that the news was leaked to increase sales. While Rowling herself had the desire to play in publishing without the weight of her reputation, the biography attached to the book was poorly done. LeakyNews
?Born in 1968, Robert Galbraith is married with two sons. After several years with the Royal Military Police, he was attached to the SIB (Special Investigation Branch), the plain-clothes branch of the RMP. He left the military in 2003 and has been working since then in the civilian security industry. The idea for protagonist Cormoran Strike grew directly out of his own experiences and those of his military friends who have returned to the civilian world. ?Robert Galbraith? is a pseudonym.
Clearly Rowling wasn?t motivated by money despite the fabrications. What?s also intriguing is that Rowling chose a male penname rather than a female one. Despite being one of the most successful authors in modern history, even she felt the need to maintain a male persona.
A Diva Takes Her Time ? Gawker reports that Beyonce appears to be scrapping an upcoming album and may be starting over. Other singers like Mariah Carey are doing the same thing. Lady Gaga?s third full length album is due to be released on November 11, which would be two and a half years after her last album release.
The article brought to mind how authors are pushed to release faster and faster. One book a year is frowned upon. Some self published authors indicate that you need to release something at least every three months and others try to push something new out every month or every other month.
The closing line of the Gawker article may be true for music and books:
As the music industry continues its downslide, people flail, desperate to monetize, clinging to an industry-wide slippage of popularity and relevance. To take one?s time and get it right is a bold act. Letting people miss you is still a valid form of promotio Gawker
US visa bureau says ?League of Legends? is a professional sport ? The US immigration department, in charge of issuing visas for work or study, has been convinced that playing video games is a legitimate professional sport.
?Riot e-sports manager Nick Allen told GameSpot that the company had convinced US immigration services to recognize League of Legends as a professional sport and simplify the visa process accordingly; the first person to benefit will be Canadian player Danny ?Shiphtur? Le, who was temporarily unable to compete this spring because of work permit problems. E-sports VP Dustin Beck later confirmed the change to Polygon. ?This is a watershed moment,? he said. ?It validates e-sports as a sport. Now we have the same designation as the NBA or NHL or other professional sports leagues.?
The sports visa allows players to remain in the US for up to five years. The Verge
