How turtles got their shells: Fossil of extinct South African reptile provides clues

May 30, 2013 ? Through careful study of an ancient ancestor of modern turtles, researchers now have a clearer picture of how the turtles' most unusual shell came to be. The findings, reported on May 30 in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, help to fill a 30- to 55-million-year gap in the turtle fossil record through study of an extinct South African reptile known as Eunotosaurus.

"The turtle shell is a complex structure whose initial transformations started over 260 million years ago in the Permian period," says Tyler Lyson of Yale University and the Smithsonian. "Like other complex structures, the shell evolved over millions of years and was gradually modified into its present-day shape."

The turtle shell isn't really just one thing -- it is made up of approximately 50 bones. Turtles are the only animals that form a shell through the fusion of ribs and vertebrae. In all other animals, shells are formed from bony scales on the surface; they don't stick their bones on the outsides of their bodies.

"The reason, I think, that more animals don't form a shell via the broadening and eventually suturing together of the ribs is that the ribs of mammals and lizards are used to help ventilate the lungs," Lyson says. "If you incorporate your ribs into a protective shell, then you have to find a new way to breathe!" Turtles have done just that, with the help of a muscular sling.

Until recently, the oldest known fossil turtles, dating back about 215 million years, had fully developed shells, making it hard to see the sequence of evolutionary events that produced them. That changed in 2008 with the discovery of Chinese Odontochelys semitestacea, a reptile about 220 million years old, which had a fully developed plastron -- the belly side of the shell -- but only a partial carapace on its back.

Eunotosaurus takes the turtle and its shell back another 40 million years or so. It had nine broadened ribs found only in turtles. And like turtles, it lacked the intercostal muscles running between its ribs. But Eunotosaurus didn't have other features common to Odontochelys and turtles, including broad spines on their vertebrae.

Lyson says he and his colleagues now plan to investigate various other aspects of turtles' respiratory systems, which allow them to manage with their ribs locked up into a protective outer shell. "It is clear that this novel lung ventilation mechanism evolved in tandem with the origin of the turtle shell," he says.

Wiggins out of Tour de France with knee problem

PARIS (AP) ? Bradley Wiggins will not defend his Tour de France title because of a knee problem, giving teammate Chris Froome the chance to win cycling's premier race after finishing runner-up last year.

Wiggins became the first British rider to win the Tour, but he has not been able to prepare properly leading to the June 29 start of the race.

He withdrew before the 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia two weeks ago because of a chest infection. His Team Sky said Friday he also has an "ongoing knee condition" and would not be considered for the squad.

"It's a huge disappointment not to make the Tour. I desperately wanted be there, for the team and for all the fans along the way ? but it's not going to happen," Wiggins said in a team statement. "I can't train the way I need to train and I'm not going to be ready. Once you accept that, it's almost a relief not having to worry about the injury and the race against time."

Last season was an astonishingly successful one for Wiggins. In addition the Tour, he also won the Paris-Nice stage race, Tour de Romandie, the Dauphine Libere and the Olympic gold medal in dominant fashion in the time trial.

"It's a big loss but, given these circumstances, we won't consider him for selection," Sky's team principal Dave Brailsford said. "It's incredibly sad to have the reigning champion at Team Sky but not lining up at the Tour. But he's a champion, a formidable athlete and will come back winning as he has before."

With Wiggins out, Froome will become the undisputed team leader for the Tour. Sky had already said that Froome would be its team leader, although Wiggins had indicated he may have tried to ride for victory if he were in contention toward the end of the race.

Relations between the two were frosty during last year's Tour, with Froome sometimes looking much the stronger rider in the climbs but being thwarted by team orders to support Wiggins rather than try and attack him.

This prompted a spat between Wiggins' wife and Froome's girlfriend, with the women showing support for their partners by exchanging barbs on Twitter.

Froome finished second at the Spanish Vuelta two years ago and won a bronze medal in the Olympic time trial. He has shown good form this year by winning the Criterium International and Tour de Romandie.

Wiggins was looking to follow his Tour success with a Giro victory until his bid was derailed by illness. Although his chest infection has cleared up, team doctor Richard Freeman says there are still concerns with his knee.

"However, further medical investigations on the knee injury that we were managing at the Giro showed the condition was more significant than we thought," Freeman said. "It has needed intensive treatment and, whilst it will be fully resolved, Bradley now needs to rest completely for five days before a gradual, return to full training over a period of two to three weeks."

Wiggins had to withdraw from the 2011 Tour early on after breaking his collarbone in a crash. He has promised to come back stronger from this latest setback.

"I've been through this before, when I broke my collarbone, so I know how it works. I'll get this sorted, set new goals for this season and focus on those," Wiggins said. "This team has so many riders in great shape, ready for selection and we set incredible standards for performance which shouldn't be compromised. We need to have the best chance to win."

Legal heat rises for Total's 'Big Moustache' in Iran bribery case

By Michel Rose and Muriel Boselli

PARIS (Reuters) - Total SA's Christophe de Margerie, who faces a possible trial over alleged bribes in Iran, has been dogged by legal investigations and market skepticism during his six years at the top of Europe's third-largest oil group.

The 61-year-old, whose mandate expires in 2015, has so far failed to convince that he can deliver on a riskier exploration strategy. Currently trading at 39.4 euros, Total's stock is valued at 7.8 times 12-month forward earnings, a 7 percent discount on BP and Shell and close to a 20 percent discount on average to its global peers.

The decade-long investigations of bribery allegations linked to Total's dealings with Iraq and Iran have been a persistently nagging background feature of de Margerie's ascent.

Now the Iran case has come to a head with the company agreeing on Wednesday to pay $398 million to settle U.S. criminal and civil allegations that it paid bribes to win oil and gas contracts in Iran, while a French prosecutor is recommending de Margerie himself go to trial.

De Margerie firmly denies any wrongdoing and a Total spokesman said that the company and de Margerie would demonstrate in any trial that their behavior had been legal.

But for the man nicknamed "Big Moustache" inside the company, the development comes at a potentially crucial time, with just two years left to assure his legacy at the group before he leaves the chief executive position.

After graduating from the standard Ecole Superieure de Commerce business school - an anomaly in a company filled with engineers from elite French schools - de Margerie joined the financial department of Total in 1974 because, as he once joked, the company was the nearest to his home.

The comment was typical of a free-wheeling style that admirers and adversaries alike say masks an astute business sense and tough negotiating skills.

"KING OF CRUDE"

From a family of ambassadors and top corporate executives, de Margerie's mother is the daughter of Taittinger group founder Pierre Taittinger.

Former Qatari Energy Minister Abdullah bin Khalifa al-Attiyah once asked de Margerie - a personal friend - whether he needed to work after being told the plush Crillon hotel in Paris where they were having dinner belonged at the time to the Taittingers.

"He could have become king of 'Brut' but he has opted to become king of crude," cousin Pierre Emmanuel Taittinger said of de Margerie in an interview with the Wall Street Journal - a pun as "Brut" means both dry champagne and crude oil in French.

De Margerie oversaw Total's Middle East operations and then joined the group's exploration and production branch, the most prestigious, in 1995. He became chief executive in 2007.

Aside from the Iran case, de Margerie has watched legal difficulties mount over Total's dealings in Iraq.

Paris prosecutors asked a criminal court on February 12 to fine Total 750,000 euros ($1 million) for corrupting foreign agents during the U.N. oil-for-food program for Iraq a decade ago.

Total is accused of bribery, complicity and influence- peddling at the time of the program, designed to allow Saddam Hussein's Iraq to buy humanitarian goods through United Nations-controlled oil sales at a time of international sanctions.

Total told the court it had taken precautions to avoid illegal payments to the Iraqi government during the U.N. oil-for-food program, but had been thwarted by an opaque system of middlemen that it only discovered later. The final verdict is due on July 8.

"Christophe was very affected by the legal episodes in Iraq and Iran," a close adviser and friend to de Margerie said. "He was not destroyed, but hurt."

None of that has discouraged de Margerie from pursuing a "high-risk, high-reward" exploration strategy -- drilling more wells in difficult-to-reach places -- praised by some but criticized by investors who say it has yet to yield cash results.

The strategy is intended to exploit "frontier" basins such as in the North Sea off the coast of Norway and Scotland to help Total meet its 2017 output capacity goal of about 3 million barrels of oil equivalent a day.

At the same time, de Margerie has sought to reduce the group's exposure to its home French market in the past few years, notably with the 2010 closure of its Dunkirk refinery.

The closure plan sparked a nationwide two-week strike by unions, which finally agreed to concede the site after a final nine hours of talks with management at Total's headquarters.

"He's smart and a charmer, which makes him that bit more dangerous," said Charles Foulard, the coordinator of the CGT union at Total who led the 2010 strikes.

New analysis yields improvements in a classic 3-D imaging technique

May 25, 2013 ? Research conducted at Curtin University in Perth has enabled significant increases in image quality in a widely used 3D printing technique that is more than 100 years old.

Anaglyph printing -- think of the red-and-blue 3D glasses used to transform 2D images to 3D images in comics, magazines, books, and newspapers -- came into being when the continuous-tone printed anaglyph was invented by French physicist Louis Ducos du Hauron in 1891.

The technique works by combining the left and right images of a stereoscopic image pair into the red and blue color channels of the output anaglyph image. With the red/blue 3D glasses, the left eye sees only the red channel of the anaglyph image, and the right sees only the blue. If the anaglyph 3D image has been constructed correctly, the viewer sees a pleasing 3D image on the printed page.

The project team, led by Curtin research engineer Andrew Woods, targeted crosstalk problems which are visible as ghost-like shadows. Their paper published recently in the SPIE journal Optical Engineering details seven recommendations for overcoming crosstalk.

"The largest reduction in crosstalk is likely be achieved by using inks which have a better spectral purity than current process inks used in color printers," Woods said. "We found that an 80% reduction in crosstalk was potentially achievable just by changing the cyan ink."

The anaglyph technique is easy to implement and the anaglyph 3D glasses are relatively cheap, so the technique is used very widely, Woods said.

However, printed anaglyph images often suffer from a number of image quality limitations. When the 3D image is viewed through the colored glasses, there is often a significant amount of crosstalk (or ghosting), an undesirable property of some 3D techniques whereby the left eye sees some of the image intended for only the right eye, and vice-versa. Crosstalk is usually visible as ghost-like shadows throughout the image. If crosstalk levels are too high, the quality of the 3D experience can be significantly reduced.

"The printed anaglyph is 121 years old, but this appears to be the first time that a detailed technical simulation of crosstalk in printed anaglyphs has been developed," Woods said. "We started by measuring the spectral characteristics of various printing inks, 3D glasses, light sources, and papers. From there we developed a simulation which models the viewing of an anaglyph 3D image, and subsequently performed an experiment to validate the accuracy of the model. We hope this work will help provide a 21st-century improvement to the 19th-century invention."

In addition to changing the cyan ink, recommendations include using high-quality anaglyph glasses, an optimized light source, and improved image processing algorithms.

The full paper is available via open access in the SPIE Digital Library: "Characterizing and reducing crosstalk in printed anaglyph stereoscopic 3D images."

The work was originally presented in the Stereoscopic Displays and Applications conference during the 2013 IS&T/SPIE Electronic Imaging symposium in Burlingame, California, USA. The call for papers has been released for Electronic Imaging 2014 which will be held 2-6 February in downtown San Francisco.

BEIRUT (AP) ? The leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group vowed to help propel President Bashar Assad to victory in Syria's bloody civil war, warning that the fall of the Damascus regime would give rise to extremists and plunge the Middle East into a "dark period."

In a televised address, Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah also said Hezbollah members are fighting in Syria against Islamic radicals who pose a danger to Lebanon, and pledged that his group will not allow Syrian militants to control areas along the Lebanese border. He pledged that Hezbollah will turn the tide of the conflict in Assad's favor, and stay as long as necessary to do so.

"We will continue this road until the end, we will take the responsibility and we will make all the sacrifices," he said. "We will be victorious."

The Hezbollah leader's comments offered the clearest public confirmation yet that the Iranian-backed group is directly involved in Syria's war. They also were Nasrallah's first remarks since Hezbollah fighters have pushed to the front lines of the battle for the strategic Syrian town of Qusair near the Lebanese frontier.

The fighting in Qusair, which government troops backed by Hezbollah pounded with artillery on Saturday, has laid bare the Lebanese Shiite group's growing role in the Syrian conflict. Hezbollah initially tried to play down its involvement, but could no longer do so after dozens of its fighters were killed in the town and buried in large funerals in Lebanon.

Nasrallah, who was speaking on the anniversary of Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon in May 2000, used his speech in part to brace the community for the possibility of more of its men returning home in coffins.

The fight in Qusair has proven a deadly grind for both sides. On Saturday, government forces backed by Hezbollah militants shelled the town in the heaviest barrage yet of a week-long assault to dislodge rebels from the opposition stronghold, activists said.

Since the regime offensive began Wednesday, Syrian state media has said government forces have steadily gained ground. Local activists deny that pro-Assad forces have made headway and say rebel fighters are defending their positions.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 30 people, including 27 rebels, were killed and dozens wounded Saturday in the town, which holds strategic importance for both the regime and the opposition.

For Assad, Qusair's value lies in its location along a land corridor linking two of his strongholds, the capital of Damascus and towns on the Mediterranean coast, the heartland of his minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam. For the rebels, holding Qusair means protecting a supply line to Lebanon, 10 kilometers (six miles) away.

Saturday's barrage of rockets, mortar rounds and tank shells began after daybreak, said Qusair activist Hadi Abdullah and the pro-opposition Observatory. Both said it was the most intense shelling since the regime launched its offensive there a week ago.

Hezbollah has come under harsh criticism at home and abroad for sending its gunmen to Qusair, and Nasrallah's gamble in Syria primarily stems from his group's vested interest in the Assad regime's survival. The Syrian government has been one of Hezbollah's strongest backers for decades and the militant group fears that if the regime falls it will be replaced by a U.S.-backed government that will be hostile to Hezbollah.

Nasrallah on Saturday defended his group's deepening involvement and sought to frame the fight next door as part of a broader battle against Israel.

"Syria is the back of the resistance, and the resistance cannot stand, arms folded while its back is broken," Nasrallah told thousands of supporters from a secret location via a video link.

"If Syria falls into the hand of America, Israel and takfiris, the resistance (Hezbollah) will be besieged and Israel will enter Lebanon and impose its will," Nasrallah said. Takfiri Islamists refers to an ideology that urges Sunni Muslims to kill anyone they consider an infidel.

Syria's fall, he said, would mean "Palestine will be lost" and "the people of our region and its nations will enter a bad and dark period."

Along with Iran, Syria has been the main backer of Hezbollah. Much of the group's arsenal, including tens of thousands of rockets, is believed to have come from Iran via Syria or from Syria itself.

Hezbollah's role has drawn intense criticism from Syria's main opposition group.

"Some Lebanese are being sent to Syria as invaders in order to return back home in coffins draped with shame," said George Sabra, the acting head of the Syrian National Coalition.

More than 70,000 people have been killed and several million displaced since the uprising against Assad erupted in March 2011 and morphed into a civil war. The Syrian government and Hezbollah deny there is an uprising in Syria, portraying the war as a foreign-backed conspiracy driven by Israel, the U.S. and its Gulf allies.

The Syrian conflict poses a threat to the stability of Lebanon, whose sectarian divide mirrors that of Syria, and the fighting next door has repeatedly spilled over the border. For the past week, Assad's opponents and supporters have been clashing in the Lebanese port city of Tripoli, using mortars, grenades and machine guns to attack densely populated areas.

Sniper fire in Tripoli killed four people on Saturday, bringing the week's death toll to 29 including three Lebanese soldiers, according to a Lebanese official who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military regulations. More than 200 people have been wounded.

Nasrallah said Lebanon should be spared the fighting over Syria's crisis and called upon rivals to go fight in Syria.

"You are fighting in Syria and we are fighting in Syria. Let's fight there. Let's keep Lebanon away from the fighting," Nasrallah said referring to Lebanese Sunni militants who are fighting alongside the Syrian opposition.

Hezbollah is also facing repercussions in Europe over its support for the Syrian military.

Earlier this week, France and Germany joined a push by Britain to have the EU declare Hezbollah's military wing a terrorist organization. Such a move, long sought by the U.S., would hamper Hezbollah operations in Europe.

Nasrallah said the threats by the EU "is all ink on paper" adding that this will not affect the group.

"We have been under pressure for 30 years and it did not affect our morale," he said.

Meanwhile, Syria's fractured political opposition failed Saturday after three days of intense deliberations to reach a decision on whether to attend an international conference brokered by the U.S. and Russia aimed at ending the conflict in Syria.

The U.S. and Russia want to bring together representatives of the opposition and the Syrian government at an international conference in Geneva for talks on a possible transition government. Much remains up in the air, including the date, the agenda and the list of participants.

The Syrian National Coalition meetings started Thursday and were scheduled to end Saturday but discord among the fractured opposition delayed the discussions. The talks now were expected to continue Sunday, opposition figures said.

On Friday, Syria ally Russia said the Assad regime has accepted in principle to attend talks in Geneva, though there has been no official statement from Damascus.

The opposition is deeply suspicious about Assad's intention to hold serious peace talks, and senior opposition figures have ruled out attendance unless Assad's departure tops the agenda of such negotiations.

Are Pricey A/V Cables Worth the Money?

It's a common question: Are expensive A/V cables really better than their cheaper, less hyped counterparts? While you can buy $16,400 speaker cables, they won't ensure breathtaking sound, and they likely won't even make a noticeable difference in audio quality.

HDMI: There can be only one

HDMI is the one cable that defines contemporary home-theater systems, and a host of companies claim to have the best HDMI cables out there. Unless you're going to run cables at distances of more than 50 feet, which requires signal boosting, there is no significant difference between the quality of the signal from expensive cables versus their cheaper counterparts. That's because HDMI signals either arrive at their destination or they don't?there's no in-between.

PopMech editors couldn't tell the difference between HDMI cable types, and the test-centric folks at Gizmodo and CNET have also noted how inexpensive HDMI cords don't impact performance significantly in standard home-theater setups. A quality 50-foot cable can be had for $43, even less if you buy in bulk. And they're dirt-cheap if you only need 3 feet.

Legacy Connectors

The same thing is largely true for legacy connectors, be they legacy analog connectors such as the venerable single RCA jack, older digital connectors such as the HD-video-only DVI (Digital Visual Interface) and audio SPDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format), or even coaxial audio connectors. Pricey cords will not provide noticeable performance improvement. Prices vary, but cords acceptable for most uses shouldn't cost more than a few dollars to around $20, depending on length.

However, because low-shielded cable can cause signal degradation, investing in better-shielded cord makes sense if your components are separated from your television or audio system by significant distance, such as in a multiroom instillation. Well-shielded cable is also a must when running standard coaxial cable for satellite cable television or speaker cord to avoid electrical interference.

Speaker Wire

To add external speakers to your flat-panel TV, you're going to have to run wire. There are many myths about oxygen-free wire, with intense marketing pushing the idea that pricey silver wire costing hundreds to thousands of dollars is better than standard copper. But given that you can get acceptable sound from coat hangers, 100 feet of quality, shielded 14-gauge bulk copper speaker wire will work just fine. It will fulfill most needs and costs about $25 from a reputable online retailer.

If you're running less than 10 feet of wire, thin, 18-gauge cord will work well. If you need less than 100 feet, 16-gauge is also a good bet. If you're running between 100 and 200 feet, upgrading to 14-gauge wire makes sense, given the reduced signal resistance, as does thicker 12-gauge if you're running it a distance greater than 200 feet. If you're running your wire in walls, you'll need UL CL2/CL3-rated wire, which is safety-tested for electrical shock and fire.

The Perils of Wireless

If you're paying extra for high-speed bandwidth, why not take full advantage of your system by running Cat 6 Ethernet cable, today's standard computer interface cable, between your PC and television or receiver? You'll get higher signal-transfer rates and fewer problems than with bandwidth-limiting Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections. Just make sure to use well-shielded cord to avoid electrical interference, and run away from electrical wiring.

Of course, all of this begs the question, how do you know you're purchasing quality cable? Go with a provider known for it. Monoprice, Newegg, and Blue Jeans Cable are all good online bets.

Ultimately, you should trust your own ears and eyes when it comes to system setup. If you try a cable and something seems amiss in your sound or picture, it probably is. Return it and try something else.

Vodafone UK delays LTE launch, incompatibility with the iPhone 5 a factor

Anyone in the UK on Vodafone hoping for some LTE soon will be disappointed, as their CEO has confirmed the carrier won't be switching on 4G until around September. This is in part due to the current iPhone 5 being incompatible with their proposed LTE network. Speaking to The Guardian, CEO Vittorio Colao said:

"We are convinced our own 4G will be better performing. We want to be able to launch it when it's really ready. End of the summer means when there is going to be a good commercial window for launching it."

Currently, the iPhone 5 will only operate LTE on the 1800MHz bands in the UK, while Vodafone acquired 800MHz and 2600MHz in the recent spectrum auctions. Had Vodafone launched soon as they were initially expected to, they would have launched without an LTE iPhone. Not a great marketing play. Stepping back to September plays right into the "good commercial window for launching it," as we're naturally expecting a new iPhone in the latter stages of the year.

US test-launches intercontinental missile

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) ? The U.S. Air Force has launched an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile from a California base, a month after the test flight was postponed because of tensions with North Korea.

Vandenberg Air Force Base says the Minuteman 3 lifted off at 6:27 a.m. PDT Wednesday. It later splashed down thousands of miles away in the Pacific.

It's the first Minuteman test-launch of the year. Several Minutemans are launched each year at from Vandenberg to determine the weapon system's accuracy and reliability.

Officials say the original mid-April flight plan was delayed to avoid it being misconstrued by North Korea during a time of heightened tensions. It was rescheduled for Tuesday morning but was pushed back a day due to a problem with range safety instruments.

Euro Tour CEO apologizes for saying 'colored'

VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) ? The head of the European golf tour apologized for using the term "colored" during a live television interview Thursday in which he was reacting to the spat between Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia.

European Tour CEO George O'Grady said that "most of Sergio's friends are colored athletes in the United States."

The word "colored" was once widely used in the United States to refer to African-Americans but it is now considered antiquated and offensive. In some African countries, it is used to denote individuals of mixed racial ancestry.

"I deeply regret using an inappropriate word in a live interview for Sky Sports for which I unreservedly apologize," O'Grady, who is British, said in a statement released later Thursday.

Woods and Garcia have exchanged barbs over the past two weeks, dating to the third round of The Players Championship when Garcia implied that Woods purposely stirred up the gallery as the Spaniard was playing a shot.

But the situation got uglier Tuesday when Garcia and his Ryder Cup teammates were at a dinner. The emcee, Golf Channel's Steve Sands, jokingly asked Garcia if he would have Woods over for dinner during the U.S. Open.

"We'll have him round every night," Garcia replied. "We will serve fried chicken."

The remark was reminiscent of Fuzzy Zoeller's similar comment about Woods during his record-setting victory in the 1997 Masters, when Woods became the first player of black heritage to win a major.

Certain foods, fried chicken and watermelon in particular, have been used in dehumanizing caricatures of blacks as far back as the beginning America's segregation era in the 19th century. The imagery has become less common in the decades since integration, though Woods ? the only player of African-American heritage on the PGA Tour and the top player in the world ? has occasionally endured racially tinged insults.

Garcia initially released an apologetic statement and followed it up Wednesday at a news conference from the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, site of the European Tour's flagship event.

"I feel sick about it and I feel truly, truly sorry," he said.

Garcia said he meant to give a funny answer to a playful question, and it turned out to be "totally stupid and out of place."

In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Woods said: "The comment that was made wasn't silly. It was wrong, hurtful and clearly inappropriate. I'm confident that there is real regret the remark was made. The Players ended nearly two weeks ago and it's long past time to move on and talk about golf."

LG's 5inch HD Oxide mobile display has a 1mmslim bezel, we go eyeson at SID

LG's flexible OLED display is just one of the company's many panels on show here at SID. Our next stop in the booth tour is a 5-inch HD prototype, which uses TFT Oxide technology for low power consumption and a super-slim profile. Like the 5-inch flexible panel, this guy sports a 1mm bezel, and a rep told us it utilizes IPS technology to offer wide viewing angles. The model you see here is rated at 250 nits, though LG expects a significantly higher brightness count by the time the panel makes it to market. As for when that will happen, "ASAP" is the only answer we received. Hit up our photo gallery below for a closer look.

Brutal attack in London heightens terror fears

LONDON (AP) ? Two men with butcher knives hacked another to death Wednesday near a London military barracks and one then went on video to explain the crime ? shouting political statements, gesturing with bloodied hands and waving a meat cleaver. Soon after, arriving police shot and wounded the unidentified assailants and took them into custody.

The brutal daylight attack galvanized this city and raised fears that terrorism had returned to London.

Authorities did not identify the victim by name, but French President Francois Hollande referred to him as a "soldier" at a news conference in Paris with visiting British Prime Minister David Cameron. Cameron would not confirm that, but British media reported that the victim was wearing a shirt in support of troops and Britain's Ministry of Defense said it was investigating whether a U.K. soldier was involved.

Calling it "an appalling murder," Cameron said there were "strong indications" it was an act of terrorism, and two other officials said there were signs the attack was motivated by radical Islam.

The Cabinet's emergency committee was immediately convened and security was stepped up at army barracks across London. Cameron cut short his Paris trip to return to London and his office said he would chair another session Thursday.

The incident unfolded Wednesday afternoon when officers responded to reports of an assault just a few blocks from the Royal Artillery Barracks in the neighborhood of Woolwich.

Images from the scene showed a blue car that appeared to have been used in the attack, its hood crushed and rammed into a signpost on a sidewalk that was smeared with blood. A number of weapons ? including butchers' knives, a machete and a meat cleaver ? were strewn on the street.

While there were moments of chaos ? one local primary school went into lockdown when a teacher saw the victim's body ? the scene was striking in its normalcy. Pedestrians milled about with grocery bags and shopping carts as a body lay motionless in the street ? and the attackers remained on the scene, wielding long knives.

One British broadcaster ran video taken on a cellphone of what appeared to be one of the attackers, his hands covered in blood, making political statements about "an eye for an eye" as a body lay behind him.

Footage ? obtained by ITV news and The Sun newspaper ? showed a man in a dark jacket and knit cap walking toward a camera, clutching a meat cleaver and a knife. Speaking in English with a British accent, he apologized that women passers-by "have had to witness this" barbarity, saying that "in our land our women have to see the same."

He gave no indication what that land was as he urged people to tell the government to "bring our troops back." British troops are deployed in Afghanistan and recently supported the French-led intervention in Mali.

"We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you," the man declared. "We must fight them as they fight us." The camera then panned away to show a body lying on the ground.

The Associated Press examined the footage to verify its authenticity, cross-referencing images from the scene, aerial shots, the location of a car behind the alleged attacker and the appearance of a body and a car in the background. There was no immediate way for the AP to verify who the cameraman was.

Other images showed the second suspect clutching a long knife as he engaged in conversation with a woman who British media said tried to intervene to prevent further bloodshed.

The Daily Telegraph identified the woman as Ingrid Loyau-Kennett, 48, and said she confronted the attackers, telling them: "It is only you versus many people. You are going to lose."

Saying she wanted to stop the suspect from attacking anyone else, she asked him if he "did it" and what he wanted.

"He said: 'I killed him because he killed Muslims and I am fed up with people killing Muslims in Afghanistan. They have nothing to do there,'" she told the newspaper.

Britain has been at the heart of several terror attacks or plots in recent years, the most deadly being the 2005 rush-hour suicide bombings when 52 commuters were killed. More recently, Parviz Khan was convicted in 2008 of plotting to kidnap and behead a British Muslim soldier in Birmingham.

Some extremists have lashed out at Britain's involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq. Recently, groups have also criticized Britain's assistance in the French-led mission to Mali to root out Islamic extremists in the north.

Britain's prime minister said there were "strong indications" Wednesday's attack was a terrorist incident.

"We have suffered these attacks before, we have always beaten them back," Cameron said. "We will not be cowed, we will never buckle."

Two U.K. government officials said the attack seemed to have been ideologically motivated by radical Islam, adding that the assessment was not based solely on video footage of one suspect making political statements against the British government. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the ongoing investigation.

Scotland Yard confirmed that counterterrorism officers were leading an investigation into the attack. Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said the two men had been arrested and urged Londoners to remain calm. Both were hospitalized, one in serious condition.

Late Wednesday, riot police fanned out in Woolwich as about 50 men waving the flag of the far-right English Defense League gathered, singing nationalistic songs and shouting obscenities about the Quran.

Muslim religious groups and charities were quick to condemn the attack and urged police to calm tensions. The Muslim Council of Britain called it a "barbaric act that has no basis in Islam," adding that "no cause justifies this murder."

The barracks where the attack took place house a number of the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery and independent companies of the Grenadier and Coldstream Guards. They were the site of shooting events during the 2012 London Olympics.

Fred Oyat, 44, who lives in a high-rise nearby, said he heard four gun shots and went straight to the window.

"I saw one man lying there bleeding, another lying on the pavement being disarmed. A policeman was pointing a gun at him. A third man was lying further up the street. ... He was bleeding profusely," Oyat said. "There were four knives on the ground ? big kitchen knives. The knives were very bloody."

David Dixon, head master at a nearby primary school, said he saw a body lying in the road outside. After making sure all students were inside, he quickly put the school into lockdown. He then heard shots fired, he told the BBC.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission, which is called in when officers are involved in shootings, confirmed it was investigating the attack.

Witnesses recounted seeing the suspects ? armed with meat cleavers and possibly a firearm ? rushing toward police when officers arrived on the scene.

"He ran towards police before they could even get out of the car," Julia Wilders told Britain's Press Association.

Graham Wilders said he saw one of the suspects pull out a handgun.

"He didn't fire the gun," Wilders told the BBC. "They went for the police with a handgun. The police were the only ones who did any shooting."
