Long-delayed school snack rules to come soon: Vilsack

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - After more than a year's delay, American schools will soon see new U.S. government rules targeting the kinds of snacks sold to students, a move nutritionists say could play an important role in fighting childhood obesity.

Anxious schools have waited more than a year to find out how sales of potato chips, candy bars, sodas and similar treats to students will be restricted. These rules on food sold outside traditional cafeteria meals are a key part of the first major overhaul on school food in more than three decades.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently told Reuters that the rules on what snacks may be offered in vending machines, school stores and the like, originally due in late 2011, are expected to be finished in the early part of this year. (http://reut.rs/URlL5N)

Officially, USDA said it expects the proposal by April, at which point a 60-day public comment period would kick in before final rules are issued - potentially for the next school year.

Vilsack said the delay was in part to give food and drink manufacturers, as well as schools, time to adjust to a revamp of cafeteria breakfasts and lunches in early 2012.

Those earlier sweeping changes, dictating more whole grains, fruits and vegetables on school menus, led to a few complaints and some hungry children. USDA later gave schools more flexibility on the new menus.

"The whole idea is that they eat more fruits and vegetables ... that's not going to happen overnight," said Gail Koutroubas, who oversees food services for the public school district in Andover, Massachusetts, near Boston.

The school nutrition overhaul seeks to make a dent in the nation's obesity epidemic at a time when government statistics show more than one-third of those younger than 18 are too heavy.

Health advocates want the snack changes to include smaller portions, reduced fat and less sugar. Acceptable drinks for most students would include low- or no-fat milks, 100 percent juices and water.

"We're not saying get rid of the vending machines. Just change what's in them," said Margo Wootan, head of nutrition policy at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, an advocacy group. "We, as parents, don't want our kids eating candy bars and Gatorade for lunch."

Recent USDA data shows most U.S. public schools sell snacks in some way, but access to vending machines varies.

Machines are in just 13 percent of elementary schools for young children, but are in 67 percent of middle schools, where students are around 11 to 14 years old, and 85 percent of high schools, USDA said in December.

USDA also found more than 80 percent of school districts have either restricted or banned sugary drinks. More than 75 percent also have some kind of limit or ban on snack foods.

DRINKMAKERS 'COOPERATIVE'

Tops on the list of concerns are drinks, particularly high-calorie, sugar-sweetened beverages such as sodas and sports drinks that are popular among youth but cited by public health experts as empty calories with no nutritional benefit.

"The beverage industry from our perspective has been very cooperative. They understand and appreciate there has to be a different approach in terms of what's available in vending machines," Vilsack said.

Representatives from Coke and other drink makers met with White House and USDA staff last June to present industry-funded data on their voluntary effort in schools, according to one representative at the meeting.

The American Beverage Association said it wants USDA's snack rules to match the industry lobbying group's 2005 pledge to limit certain lower calorie sodas and sports drinks to mostly older students.

Cranberry growers also are pushing to allow sugar-sweetened cranberry juices, saying their fruits are too tart otherwise. Pizza companies are also seeking some exemptions.

Some health experts worry that the food and beverage industries' lobbying power will dilute the new nutrition law. They are also concerned that the delay signals a more cautious approach from the Obama administration.

Overall, food and beverage companies and groups spent more than $26 million in lobbying on a variety of issues over the last year, led by Coke and Pepsi, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

"We're very concerned," said Maya Rockeymoore, head of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation program targeting childhood obesity. "Certainly sugar-sweetened beverages ... need to be completely eliminated from the equation."

Many states and schools have plowed ahead with their own standards rather than wait for USDA. About half of all U.S. states have already passed laws addressing snack items, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Money can also be an issue, since snack foods sales are often profit centers for schools, sports teams and other groups, especially given the current tight school budgets.

Advocates say the changes are necessary to help stave off a health crisis that impacts students' academic performance and even national security.

Vilsack says he has a personal stake in the issue, recalling how he was taunted as a "fatso" growing up on Pennsylvania.

"I've struggled with my weight all my life, and it's not an easy thing to deal with," Vilsack told Reuters. "And if you're dealing with it, you're dealing with a lot of consequences of feeling badly about yourself."

Super Bowl 2013: Is 'flag football' ahead for the NFL?

The NFL's continuing crackdown on illegal hits has left players wondering what constitutes legal play and what will have them paying steep fines.

By Barry Wilner,?AP Pro Football Writer / January 29, 2013

"I think the rules will change," San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis said Tuesday. "There's already no helmet to helmet. Might be flag football, maybe."

Making the game safer is making NFL players unsure what's a legal hit.

Players on both Super Bowl teams say they are confused about which hits are considered clean and which ones could lead to a fine. And it's not just the guys on defense who are wondering about the future of pro football.

"I think the rules will change a lot," San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis said Tuesday. "There's already no helmet to helmet. Might be flag football, maybe."

Baltimore Ravens safety Bernard Pollard, one of the league's hardest hitters, warned against trying to take collisions out of the game, as long as they are clean.

"You can't play this game and not expect it to be physical," said Pollard, who was fined $15,250 for a hit on Patriots receiver Wes Welker in the AFC championship game that Pollard believes was within the rules. "There will be injuries in football. There's a car crash on every play."

His 49ers counterpart, All-Pro Dashon Goldson, says defenders keep this in mind when they take the field:

"Do your best and then hope you don't get a letter (with a fine) in your locker on Wednesday."

The NFL has sought to eliminate any hits to the head and neck area of defenseless players, particularly in the last three years. It also has banned players launching themselves helmet-first toward an opponent.

Yet, every week, players are fined for those actions, and there have been suspensions. Baltimore safety Ed Reed drew a one-game suspension this season that was lifted by the NFL on appeal and turned into a $50,000 fine for repeated illegal tackles. The 5-foot-11, 205-pound Reed is not considered a vicious hitter.

Reed admits he can't be sure what's a true tackle these days and what crosses the line.

"A lot needs to be done with it. I don't think every fine is right," he said. "You have to go back and really look at how guys play the game before you judge them, is what I'm trying to say."

Jeremy Kyle Cancer Battle: Host 'On The Mend'

TV chat show host Jeremy Kyle is recuperating abroad after being treated for testicular cancer.

He is understood to have had chemotherapy following the discovery of a growth late last year.

The 47-year-old presenter has taken a break from recording his ITV daytime programme while he recovers.

He is expected to return to work next week to begin filming new shows.

A statement on his programme's Facebook page said: "Jeremy was diagnosed with cancer just before Christmas. After an operation and chemotherapy treatment, I'm pleased to say he's now on the mend.

"It's been a really tough couple of months for him and his family but he wanted to let you all know that he appreciates your continuing support.

"Jeremy will be back at work next week to start filming new shows which you'll see on TV very soon."

An ITV spokeswoman said: "We wish Jeremy well and are pleased that he is making such good progress."

Kyle has hosted his TV programme for seven and a half years, putting dysfunctional relationships in the spotlight, and many have criticised it for glorifying "broken Britain".

Last week, his show was nominated for the National Television Awards for the best daytime TV show award, although it missed out to This Morning.

Kyle was a salesman before his move into broadcasting, hosting programmes in local radio.

He went on to present his Virgin Confessions show on Virgin Radio before landing his TV slot after Trisha Goddard left her daytime ITV series to head to Channel 5.

Kyle has also launched his programme in the US and has fronted other shows for ITV.

In his autobiography, I'm Only Being Honest, the twice-married presenter talked about how he suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Monthly Rewind: Girl Power, Building Brand Trust and Facebook?s New Graph Search.

Rewind vertical marketing

It?s hard to believe it?s the end of the month (already!), and in this week?s post we bring you a roundup of the marketing stories that had us talking most in January:

? Weeks before all eyes were on the capitol for the Presidential Inauguration (and Michelle?s bangs! and Beyonce?s controversial performance!), consumers watched lawmakers in Washington temporarily suspend the federal debt limit, and stock prices rose, for the most part. But to the surprise of some, Apple, aka ?the world?s most valuable company?, saw its stocks continue to falter; Apple stock is down 27 percent since September 2012. Apple competitor Google, however, is enjoying an upswing, confirming consumer interest in technology is anything but predictable. Analysts have linked the upturn for Google, not to mention IBM, to a shift to data analysis and cloud computing. But some critics are saying its high-time Apple offered cheaper alternatives to its high-end goods, especially now that Google is building an experimental wireless network.

? For marketers, data can mean many things and be pulled from myriad forums. Social media strong horse Facebook revealed a new platform two weeks ago that had users as scandalized as ever about online privacy. Facebook?s new Graph Search, which is still in beta, allows for hyper-specific searches; frighteningly, one blogger wrote about successfully searching for ?Islamic men interested in men who live in Tehran, Iran, where homosexual relations are prohibited by law and Places where they?ve worked.? In other social media news, new laws are said to protect what employees say online ? even if it?s about their employer. Read more here.

? It?s been two weeks since Lance Armstrong admitted to Oprah that he did, in fact, use performance-enhancing drugs throughout his illustrious career. Last week, consumers of his 2000 memoir, in which he denies such drug use, filed a class-action lawsuit in California for his fraudulent claims. The athlete?s been a topic of water-cooler conversation since last October, when reports that he led doping programs brought a swift end to his cycling career, stripped him of seven Tour de France titles, and saw brands Anheuser-Busch InBev, Nike and Trek Bicycles sever sponsorship ties. The folks over at ESPN hit the marketing nail on the head, though, with the assessment that consumers are ?conditioned to believe in fairy tales.? In this lay the beginning of a consumer?s relationship to a brand and its sponsors. In our post-Armstrong/T?eo/Woods marketplace, how do brands encourage consumers to believe ? and trust ? again?

? Perhaps by avoiding athletes altogether and tapping someone like Amy Poelher? After her impressive performance alongside Tina Fey at the Golden Globe Awards, the comedian was tapped to star in Best Buy?s Super Bowl ad, which will be viewed by an estimated 179.1 million viewers this Sunday, up from 172.5 million last year. According to the National Retail Federation, the average Super Bowl fan spends $68.54 on game day preparations. Super Bowl spending is expected to reach nearly $12.3 billion this year.

? Coca Cola, not surprisingly, is taking a new approach to its always-impressive Super Bowl advertizing. Last week, the brand launched via its Facebook page a choose-your-own adventure style campaign, which will run through the Super Bowl then conclude with a post-game spot that takes user participation into account. Risky? Sure. But, more importantly, never dull. Of course, only time will tell how choosy consumers will respond. One thing we do know: they will respond. Consumer involvement wins again.

(AP) ? Alex Rodriguez was ensnared in a doping investigation once again Tuesday when an alternative weekly newspaper reported baseball's highest-paid star was among a half-dozen players listed in records of a Florida clinic the paper said sold performance-enhancing drugs.

The Miami New Times said the three-time AL MVP bought human growth hormone and other performance-enhancing substances during 2009-12 from Biogenesis of America LLC, a now-closed anti-aging clinic in Coral Cables, Fla., near Rodriguez's offseason home.

The new public relations firm for the New York Yankees third baseman issued a statement denying the allegations.

The newspaper said it obtained records detailing purchases by Rodriguez, 2012 All-Star game MVP Melky Cabrera, 2005 AL Cy Young Award winner Bartolo Colon and 2011 AL championship series MVP Nelson Cruz of Texas.

Cabrera left San Francisco after the season to sign with Toronto, while Oakland re-signed Colon.

Other baseball players the newspaper said appeared in the records include Washington pitcher Gio Gonzalez, who finished third in last year's NL Cy Young Award voting, and San Diego catcher Yasmani Grandal.

Biogenesis, which the New Times said was run by Anthony Bosch, was located in a beige, nondescript office park. The former clinic is no longer listed as a business in its directory,

"There was a flier put out by the building management a couple weeks ago. It was put on all the doors and windows of all the offices," said Brad Nickel, who works in a group cruise planning company on the floor above where the clinic was located. "It just said this guy's not really a doctor, he doesn't belong here, he's no longer allowed here, call the police or the building management if you see him."

David Sierra, who works in his aunt's real estate office in the same building, kept a picture of the flier on his iPhone. He recognized the doctor in the picture from passing him in the hallway.

Sierra said while he never recognized any of the clients at the clinic, "there were always really nice cars in front ? I'm not talking just Mercedes. Range Rovers, Bentleys."

The New Times posted copies of what it said were Bosch's handwritten records, obtained through a former Biogenesis employee it did not identify.

Bosch's lawyer, Susy Ribero-Ayala, said in a statement the New Times report "is filled with inaccuracies, innuendo and misstatements of fact."

"Mr. Bosch vehemently denies the assertions that MLB players such as Alex Rodriguez and Gio Gonzalez were treated by or associated with him," she said.

Rodriguez appears 16 times in the documents New Times received, the paper said, either as "Alex Rodriguez," ''Alex Rod" or the nickname "Cacique," a pre-Columbian Caribbean chief.

Rodriguez admitted four years ago that he used PEDs from 2001-03. Cabrera, Colon and Grandal were suspended for 50 games each last year by MLB following tests for elevated testosterone. Responding to the testosterone use, MLB and the players' union said Jan. 10 they were authorizing the World Anti-Doping Agency laboratory outside Montreal to store each major leaguer's baseline testosterone/epitestosterone (T/E) ratio in order to detect abnormalities.

"We are always extremely disappointed to learn of potential links between players and the use of performance-enhancing substances," MLB said in a statement. "Only law enforcement officials have the capacity to reach those outside the game who are involved in the distribution of illegal performance-enhancing drugs. ... We are in the midst of an active investigation and are gathering and reviewing information."

A baseball official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to make public statements, said Monday that MLB did not have any documentation regarding the allegations. If MLB does obtain evidence, the players could be subject to discipline. First offenses result in a 50-game suspension and second infractions in 100-game penalties. A third violation results in a lifetime ban.

Rodriguez is sidelined for at least the first half of the season after hip surgery Jan. 16. A 50-game suspension would cost him $7.65 million of his $28 million salary.

"The news report about a purported relationship between Alex Rodriguez and Anthony Bosch are not true," Rodriguez said in a statement issued by a publicist. "He was not Mr. Bosch's patient, he was never treated by him and he was never advised by him. The purported documents referenced in the story ? at least as they relate to Alex Rodriguez ? are not legitimate."

Jay Reisinger, a lawyer who has represented Rodriguez in recent years, said the three-time AL MVP had retained Roy Black, an attorney from Rodriguez's hometown of Miami. Black's clients have included Rush Limbaugh and William Kennedy Smith.

Bosch did not return a phone message seeking comment.

MLB hopes to gain the cooperation of Bosch and others connected with the clinic, another baseball official said, also on condition of anonymity because no public statements on the matter were authorized. In order to successfully discipline players based on the records, witnesses would be needed to authenticate them, the official said.

Players could be asked to appear before MLB for interviews, but the official said MLB would be reluctant to request interviews before it has more evidence.

Rodriguez spent years denying he used PEDs before Sports Illustrated reported in February 2009 that he tested positive for two steroids in MLB's anonymous survey while with the Texas Rangers in 2003. Two days later, he admitted in an ESPN interview that he used PEDs over a three-year period. He has denied using PEDs after 2003.

If the new allegations were true, the Yankees would face high hurdles to get out of the final five years and $114 million of Rodriguez's record $275 million, 10-year contract. Because management and the players' union have a joint drug agreement, an arbitrator could determine that any action taken by the team amounted to multiple punishments for the same offense.

But if Rodriguez were to end his career because of the injury, about 85 percent of the money owed by the Yankees would be covered by insurance, one of the baseball officials said.

The Yankees said "this matter is now in the hands of the commissioner's office" and said they will not comment further until MLB's investigation ends.

Gonzalez, 21-8 for the Washington Nationals last season, posted on his Twitter feed: "I've never used performance enhancing drugs of any kind and I never will, I've never met or spoken with tony Bosch or used any substance provided by him. anything said to the contrary is a lie."

Colon was not issuing a statement, agent Adam Katz said through spokeswoman Lisa Cohen.

"We are aware of certain allegations and inferences," Cruz's law firm, Farrell & Reisinger, said in a statement. "To the extent these allegations and inferences refer to Nelson, they are denied."

Sam and Seth Levinson, the agents for Cabrera, Cruz and Gonzalez, did not respond to emails seeking comment. Greg Genske, Grandal's agent, also did not reply to an email.

Cruz and Gonzalez had not previously been linked to performance-enhancing drugs. Cruz hit 24 home runs last year for the Texas Rangers, who says they notified MLB last week after being contacted by the New Times.

The New Times report said it obtained notes by Bosch listing the players' names and the substances they received. Several unidentified employees and clients confirmed to the publication that the clinic distributed the substances, the paper said. The employees said that Bosch bragged of supplying drugs to professional athletes but that they never saw the sports stars in the office.

The paper said the records list that Rodriguez paid for HGH; testosterone cream; IGF-1, a substance banned by baseball that stimulates insulin production; and GHRP, which releases growth hormones.

Rodriguez's cousin, Yuri Sucart, also is listed as having purchased HGH. Sucart was banned from the Yankees clubhouse, charter flights, bus and other team-related activities by MLB in 2009 after Rodriguez said Sucart obtained and injected PEDs for him.

Also listed among the records, according to the New Times, are tennis player Wayne Odesnik, Cuban boxer Yuriorkis Gamboa and Jimmy Goins, the strength and conditioning coach of the University of Miami baseball team.

Odesnik, who lost in the first round of qualifying for this year's Australian Open, is a former top-100 player who was suspended by the International Tennis Federation after Australian customs officers found eight vials containing HGH in his luggage when he arrived in that country ahead of a January 2010 tournament. He denied using HGH and never tested positive for it. What originally was a two-year ban was cut in half because the ITF said Odesnik cooperated with its anti-doping program.

"The statement about Wayne's relationship with Mr. Bosch is completely false, and Wayne has contacted the reporter and newspaper for a retraction," the tennis player's mother, Janice Odesnik, wrote in an email to The Associated Press.

Mia Ro, a spokeswoman for the federal Drug Enforcement Administration in Miami, said she could not confirm or deny the existence of an investigation into Bosch or the clinic.

The University of Miami said it was conducting "an intensive review" of the matter but did not identify Goins by name.

Goins was "very surprised" to learn of the allegations raised by the New Times, according to a statement from Michelle A. White, of the Coral Gables law firm of Fenderson & Hampton, which said it was representing him.

White would not comment on whether Goins was a patient of Bosch but added that Goins "has done nothing improper either personally or as a representative of the University of Miami," and denies any allegation or inference of wrongdoing.

One-step test for mitochondrial diseases

Jan. 28, 2013 ? More powerful gene-sequencing tools have increasingly been uncovering disease secrets in DNA within the cell nucleus. Now a research team is expanding those rapid next-generation sequencing tests to analyze a separate source of DNA -- within the genes inside mitochondria, cellular power plants that, when abnormal, contribute to complex, multisystem diseases.

The study team, headed by a specialist in mitochondrial medicine at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), adapted next-generation sequencing to simultaneously analyze the whole exome (all the protein-coding DNA) of nuclear genes and the mitochondrial genome. "A first step in developing treatments for a disease is to understand its precise cause," said Marni J. Falk, M.D., the director and attending physician in the Mitochondrial-Genetic Disease Clinic at Children's Hospital. "We have developed a one-step, off-the-shelf tool that analyzes both nuclear and mitochondrial DNA to help evaluate the genetic cause of suspected mitochondrial disease."

Falk and colleagues describe their customized, comprehensive test, which they call the "1:1000 Mito-Plus Whole-Exome" kit, in the journal Discovery Medicine, published Dec. 26, 2012. Her co-corresponding author, biostatistician Xiaowu Gai, Ph.D., now of the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, collaborated on developing the test while at Children's Hospital.

While each mitochondrial disease is very rare in the population, hundreds of causes of mitochondrial diseases are known. Some originate in mutations in DNA specific to the mitochondria, tiny structures located outside the cell nucleus, while many other mitochondrial diseases are based in nuclear DNA genes that affect mitochondrial function. The role of mitochondria in human disease has been recognized only since the 1980s, based on pioneering research by Douglas C. Wallace, Ph.D., now at Children's Hospital, and a co-author of the current study.

Many mitochondrial diseases remain poorly understood. One complicating factor is heteroplasmy -- a mixture of mutated and normal mitochondrial genomes within the same cells or tissues. In contrast to conventional gene sequencing, which can detect only heteroplasmic mutations that reach levels of at least 30 to 50 percent, the customized kit has the sensitivity to detect mitochondrial genome mutations present at levels as low as 8 percent. To achieve their results, the study team adapted an existing whole-exome sequencing kit from Agilent Technologies, expanding it to encompass the mitochondrial genome.

The availability of the new kit, said Falk, if used for either clinical or research purposes, may shorten the "diagnostic odyssey" experienced by many patients and families seeking the cause of debilitating and puzzling symptoms. "Many families travel from one specialist to another for years, searching for the cause of their rare disease," she says. Specific treatments are not always available, but identifying their disease cause may be the first step toward discovering treatments.

A second recent study by Falk and colleagues reviews progress in diagnosing mitochondrial disease, through their experience at a single center over a rapidly changing three-year period before whole-exome sequencing was generally available. The retrospective review in Neurotherapeutics, published Dec. 27, 2012, covers 152 child and adult patients evaluated at CHOP's Mitochondrial-Genetics Diagnostic Clinic from 2008 to 2011.

"Before 2005, very few individuals could receive definitive molecular diagnoses for mitochondrial diseases, because of limitations in both knowledge and technology," said Falk. "Since that time, the clinical ability to sequence whole mitochondrial DNA genomes has significantly improved the diagnosis of many mitochondrial disorders."

During the study period covered in the review article, the clinic at CHOP confirmed definite mitochondrial disease in 16 percent of patients and excluded primary mitochondrial disease in 9 percent. While many diagnostic challenges clearly remain, Falk says the advent of massively parallel nuclear exome sequencing is revealing increasingly more of the genes in nuclear DNA that affect mitochondrial function, and the precise genetic disorder in a given patient, even if it is novel or uncommon. She added that molecular genetics is yielding a more nuanced understanding of the cellular pathways underlying symptoms in many mitochondrial disorders. "Those pathways offer potential new targets for treating these disorders," said Falk.

Funding for both studies came from the National Institutes of Health, grant DK082446. The Discovery Medicine study also was funded through a Foerderer Award for Excellence from The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute. Co-authors of the Discovery Medicine study included Eric A. Pierce, M.D., Ph.D., and Mark Consugar, M.S., of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary; research and development staff from Agilent under the guidance of Emily LeProust, Ph.D.; and other collaborators from CHOP.

Awesome Fly-Around Video Shows the Entire International Space Station Floating In Space

On March 19, 2009, the crew of the Discovery flew around the International Space Station after undocking at the end of mission STS-119. They filmed this awesome video—which has been sped up—that shows the orbiting structure in amazing detail. It's hard to believe we built that thing—and at the same time, I wish we had a much larger one by now. Just like 2001. More »

Senate nears vote on $50.5B bill for Sandy victims

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Three months after Superstorm Sandy devastated parts of the densely populated Northeast, the Senate is nearing a vote on a $50.5 billion emergency relief bill to help storm victims recover.

Some conservatives are complaining the bill will add to the nation's debt. But Northeast lawmakers in both parties are optimistic they have the 60 votes need to pass the bill Monday evening and send it to President Barack Obama for his signature. The House passed the measure two weeks ago.

At least $16 billion would flow to state and local governments through grants from the Housing and Urban Development Department

Sandy roared up the East Coast Oct. 29 and was blamed for 140 deaths and billions of dollars in property damage. Hardest hit were New York and New Jersey.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ Indoor Air Quality Tip - DB Heating & Cooling

At DB Heating and Cooling, we get a lot of questions about UV (ultraviolet) germicidal lights and how they can improve indoor air quality in Woodcliff Lake, NJ?area homes.? This keeps any airborne pathogens from spreading throughout your home. ?Here?s how they work:

UV germicidal?lights are also called UVGI systems, and they use an ultraviolet light to destroy the DNA of harmful organisms, thereby killing them and rendering them incapable of reproducing at the same time. While UV germicidal lights are Ideal for medical facilities, office buildings, hotels, and schools, they can also be used in residential applications. UVGI systems are a cost-effective way to improve indoor air quality, and they can be installed with most existing heating and cooling systems.

UV germicidal lights can destroy pollutants that the air cleaners don?t target, but when used alongside air cleaners, UV lamps can provide even better protection against bacteria, viruses, and toxic mold spores. Harbaugh parents could become Super Bowl TV stars

NEW YORK (AP) ? Jack and Jackie Harbaugh would do well to practice their impassive faces in front of a mirror before the Super Bowl.

The parents of Baltimore Ravens coach John and the San Francisco 49ers' Jim Harbaugh will be watched closely during Sunday's Super Bowl ? if anybody finds them ? for any visual evidence that mommy and daddy really do love one boy or the other best.

It promises to be a fascinating sidebar to CBS' coverage of the game because, as Lynn and Rick Raisman can attest, parent cams are valuable in sports coverage. NBC's clip of the Raismans watching daughter Aly perform on the uneven bars during last summer's Olympics in London went viral, with stage parents everywhere relating to their murmurs and facial contortions.

"I had no idea it was going to be so great," said David Michaels, senior producer at NBC Sports, who often produces and directs coverage of gymnastics and figure skating, events where parental involvement can be particularly intense.

Michaels makes it a point to know where parents are sitting during competitions, tracking them through spotters or sometimes sports governing bodies that know where parent seats have been assigned. Or where they are not sitting: Sometimes a dad who retreats to a concession stand because he can't bear to watch an offspring compete is a good story, too.

Michaels said he tries not to overdo it, sticking with parents who he knows are interesting and very involved in their children's competitive undertakings.

"It has certainly gotten more ubiquitous," he said. "Sometimes it's fantastic and sometimes it's just too gratuitous."

Jack, a former college and high school football coach, and his wife will be attending the Super Bowl. On a conference call last week, the parents said they did not know where they would be sitting. Even if they did, they'd be unlikely to inform a horde of reporters about their seat locations.

The senior Harbaugh was a college head coach at Western Michigan and Western Kentucky and an assistant at several places, including Michigan, Pittsburgh and Stanford. His son-in-law, Tom Crean, is the Indiana University men's basketball coach. It doesn't seem like a family that would want to watch a game casually while piling their plates with nachos.

The couple had a practice run to see what it would be like to watch their sons coach against each other on Thanksgiving 2011, when older brother John's Ravens beat the 49ers 16-6.

During that game, the couple watched in an office. Jack said his wife's face looked "nearly comatose" throughout the contest.

"She just stared at the screen," he said. "Not a word was spoken. And at the end of the game, it was just over."

They'll experience the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat ? all at once. A 75-yard touchdown pass that would be reason to stand up and cheer for one son is another son's horrible defensive lapse.

"I am going to be neutral in the game," Jackie Harbaugh said. "I know one is going to win and one is going to lose, but I would really like to end in a tie. Can the NFL do that?"

CBS Sports President Sean McManus said there will be a pregame feature about the familial battle. It would be hard to argue otherwise; no matter how much the brothers want to downplay it, it's a unique situation. But McManus said CBS would try not to let it dominate its coverage of the game.

Given the need for the coaches' parents to stay neutral, longtime TV critic David Bianculli said he wondered how much of a story it will be visually for CBS. If they really maintain impassive faces, how much will viewers want to see them on the screen?

"I would advise them to pay attention to the field, more than anything else," said Bianculli, who teaches about television for Rowan University.

A stone face is a story, too, Michaels said. The only question is how much a producer should go back to the shot.

He said he can't imagine CBS not knowing where the couple is. If they're out in public, the network will likely keep a close eye on their reactions.

"As a producer or a director in this kind of a situation, it's incumbent upon you to know where every element of the story is because you never know how it's going to evolve," Michaels said.

Finding the right approach ultimately shouldn't be much of a problem for CBS, he said.

"It's a little bit of a distraction at times," he said. "But they'll figure out the best way to deal with it. The pictures won't lie."

Computers and Technology|Hardware: Various Server Options For ...

Are you planning to setup an office which is complete in computer equipment, networking tools, and other IT infrastructure? If so, one of the many things you might be concerned with right now is how to pick the right server option that fits your newly established business. The truth is, there are many alternatives out there and it is easy to get lost with every tech solution presented by IT resellers and retailers.

However, if you want the best choice of server for your fledgling business, you need to be aware of the following options to select from:

Dedicated Server Options

Dedicated servers are hot because it provides computer administrators the capacity to have full control over their operations. This is the best option if you are running a business operation which requires your personnel to communicate and collaborate with their colleagues on multiple floors or locations. For example, instead of relying on an internet service provider to provide internet connections to your workstation computers, a dedicated server can provide its own connection in-house.

When it comes to uploading files into private archives, dedicated servers also works best for medium to large population staff because these types of servers are known for being able to handle huge amounts of traffic, storage data, or bandwidth. That means, if you run an intranet in your office or a shared virtual workspace, your dedicated server can handle it.

The only slight downside of dedicated servers is that you need to handle all the maintenance, software or hardware upgrades, and technical troubleshooting on your own.

Cloud Servers

These are servers which can be found "in the cloud", or in simpler language, servers that can be accessed, modified and configured online. This type of server is relatively new in the industry and it is revolutionary because it allows people and companies to send and store their data while using minimal hardware. Through a cloud server, a web administrator can easily control other servers within a virtual private network. File sharing and archiving is also made much easier through this amazing option.

Blade Servers

Blade servers function pretty much like any other high-end server, but the only difference is that it is optimized to conserve space and energy within your work environment. Because of its modular design, blade servers can easily fit in very small office space. This is ideal for companies who are just starting out to do business. These types of start-up business can still enjoy smooth employee communication and IT processes even with minimum space and budget.

One of the best ways to save money on your server and data storage device purchases is to get your IT equipment from an independent IT reseller. This way you can have a wide array of server options to choose from, as well as lower markup rates. Many companies save thousands of dollars per year by doing this.

Refrain Smoking By 40 Reduces Future Health Risk, Says Research

You Are Here: Home ? News ? Refrain Smoking By 40 Reduces Future Health Risk, Says Research

British, American and Canadian researchers scrutinized the histories of smoking and also the death records for 88,496 men and 113,752 women in US over these past seven years. ?Those individuals who ceased smoking at the age of 40 where about 90% of the hazards of enduring to smoke? commented Dr. Prabhat Jha, the author of research and the leader of Centre for Global Health Research based at St. Michael?s Hospital, Toronto.

?

Although the graph of smokers who give up smoking by 30 were closed the death rates of people who never smoked.? This graph was taken after considering their risk to lungs, stroke, heart attack, and cancers. ?However, the only message is that it?s never too late to give up smoking. But the investigators also warned that it is not completely safe to smoke cigarettes until the age of 40 and then quit it because the hazards still remain significant as compared to those who never smoked and had same rates of body fats, food consumption and alcohol usage.

?

Researchers even say that females who are chain smokers or the one who smoke like men departs their life like men. ?This is really very important study not only for its matter because it possibly reflects the wider population of Canada and US. Moreover, the focal point of this research is to spread the awareness of smoking on the first generation of females who initiated smoking during their teenage and continued through their adulthood?, says Dr. Graham Berlyne, the head of medicinal practice at St. Joseph?s Health Centre in Toronto and also a respirologist.

?

Berlyne further added saying that,? the years of passive smoking are not wiped away but the harms done is cut shorted and the lungs have little higher capacity to live and can still work even after losing some capabilities?. In a study, a resident of Toronto, Tracy Hager, 39, is suing lozenges and patches of nicotine to quit smoking. From the last six weeks she has not lit up cigarette but her two teenagers have initiated smoking. ?It is really very disappointing, but for this situation I can?t actually blame anyone except myself?, commented Tracy Hager who is utilizing this research as a motivation to give up her smoking habit.

?

However, similar conclusions were driven in the previous researches. The investigators noted proves coming out from India and China points to related patterns in decreasing the expectancy of life for smokers. Furthermore, in the countries with high incomes it was mostly noticed that there were more ex-smokers then the one who started currently. ?But that?s not the case in countries with low to middle income.

?

They entitled higher prices for cigarettes by the way of excise taxes, prohibits on tobacco promotion and advertising, restrictions on smoking in public places, and trouble-free admittance to termination efforts.

?

Huge Global Problem

Among the complete population of smokers about 1.3 billion smokers reside in middle and low income countries. ?Although, in many of the countries with high income, about more than half population of smokers have quit smoking. Nevertheless, this case is still very rare in the nations with poor income. However, it this current smoking trend persists, cigarette smoking will definitely take lives of one biliion people in the 21st century. The reports say, in the 20th century about 100 million people died due to smoking.

?

?For controlling the rate of deaths and diseases due to smoking, taxation is the only most efficient way to get adults to abstain from smoking and prevent teens from starting it? advices Prabhat Jha to the government who is also an associate lecturer in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at Canada?s University of Toronto.

?

Thus, it has become an utmost important to have a look on death rates due to smoking which actually can be kept under control by doing changes in your lifestyle. This research was endowed by National Institutes of Health US, the Bill and the Canadian institutes of fitness research.

No, Anonymous Doesn't Have Access to U.S. Warheads

If you were skimming the news this morning, we could understand why you might be confused and thinking that the hacking collective Anonymous has access to real U.S. warheads. Stop worrying, they don't.?

They allege they do have sensitive information about the Justice Department, though. The group took over the?United States Sentencing Service website early Saturday. The site has been taken down now, but The Verge pointed out you can still see the defaced-by-Anonymous version through this Google cache.?

RELATED: Anonymous' Megaupload Revenge Shows Copyright Compromise Isn't Possible

According to the lengthy note left on the site, the attack was carried out in the name of Aaron Swartz, the hacker and activist who committed suicide two weeks ago:?

RELATED: Turkish Cops Arrest 32 Alleged Anonymous Members

?

"Two weeks ago today, a line was crossed. Two weeks ago today, Aaron Swartz was killed. Killed because he faced an impossible choice. Killed because he was forced into playing a game he could not win -- a twisted and distorted perversion of justice -- a game where the only winning move was not to play."

Anonymous claims to have hacked multiple government websites and accumulated a wealth of sensitive information they plan to release in "warheads," a fancy, terrifying-at-first word they're using to call document dumps. The first one is/was called?U S - D O J - L E A - 2013 . A E E 256, and it was supposed to be available to download on the Sentencing Service website, but clicking the alleged link only ever returned an error message.?

RELATED: British Police Nab Two More LulzSec Hackers

So, yeah, no missiles. Only sensitive government information:

RELATED: Leaked Emails Reveal Assad's Love of LMFAO and Right Said Fred

?

The contents are various and we won't ruin the speculation by revealing them. Suffice it to say, everyone has secrets, and some things are not meant to be public. At a regular interval commencing today, we will choose one media outlet and supply them with heavily redacted partial contents of the file. Any media outlets wishing to be eligible for this program must include within their reporting a means of secure communications.

Each "warhead" is named for a Supreme Court judge. The attack seems to have been months in the making, if the note left by the hackers is to be believed. They said they only "wound down" the attack in the two weeks since Swartz's death.?

There are demands. The hackers who carried out the attack want "reform of outdated and poorly-envisioned legislation," "reform of mandatory minimum sentencing," and "a return to proportionality of punishment with respect to actual harm caused," if the Justice Department wants their information to stay private.?

This isn't the first time Anonymous has become involved with the fallout from Swartz's death. They were able to keep the Westboro Baptist Church from protesting Swartz's funeral with an extremely successful social media campaign. But we suspect the prosecutor defending the decision to seek jail time in Swartz's complicated case drew the attention of the hacking group.?

What happens next is anyone's guess. There are immediate questions like, do they actually have any sensitive information? Are they bluffing? The FBI told CNN they're already looking into it. A criminal case has been opened. Whether or not they find anything, or traces of anyone, will be interesting to see.?

Sarah Palin Interview After Fox News Departure Addresses Mitt Romney Election Loss, Tea Party 'Fight'

Despite parting ways with Fox News, Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin (R) said she's not done sharing "the message of the beauty of freedom and the imperative of defending our republic" in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News.

The 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee emphasized the 2014 elections, calling focus on the upcoming races "imperative."

"It?s going to be like 2010, but this time around we need to shake up the GOP machine that tries to orchestrate away too much of the will of constitutional conservatives who don?t give a hoot how they do it in D.C.," Palin said. "D.C. is out of touch, obviously."

Palin also reflected on the most recent presidential election, comparing Mitt Romney and Rep. Paul Ryan's 2012 loss to the own defeat she and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) faced in 2008.

"Conservatism didn?t lose. A moderate Republican candidate lost after he was perceived to alienate working class Reagan Democrat and Independent voters who didn?t turn out for him as much as they did for the McCain/Palin ticket in 2008," Palin said. "Granted, those same voters also didn?t turn out for Obama as strongly either."

When asked about her reaction to the media declaring "both you and the Tea Party dead and buried," Palin said she was "raised to never retreat and to pick battles wisely, and all in due season."

"When it comes to defending our republic, we haven?t begun to fight!" Palin said. "But we delight in those who underestimate us."

HuffPost Media reported earlier:

Real Clear Politics was the first to report that Palin ? who reportedly signed a $1 million-a-year contract with the network in 2010 ? will not be renewing it. The New York Times' Brian Stelter later confirmed the news with Fox News.

A "source close to Palin" told RCP that she had turned down a new offer. Fox News merely told the New York Times in a statement that it wished her the best.

Foster: Pro Bowl 'tough situation for both sides'

Packers 49ers FootballAP

For the 49ers and Ravens, the path to the Super Bowl was clear: They won their divisions, then won their playoff games, and now they have a chance to earn the right to be considered the best team in the NFL.

But the other seven men who will be on the field in the Super Bowl will get there through somewhat less meritorious means.

The eligibility requirements for the officials who work the postseason have been provided to PFT by the NFL, and they show that it?s not as simple as assigning the best officials to the biggest games. In fact, the NFL emphasizes taking turns to give more officials the opportunity to work in the playoffs, even if those officials don?t receive the highest grades that season.

In the 2012 regular season there were 18 referees in the NFL. Ten of them received playoff assignments: Alberto Riveron, Scott Green, Mike Carey and Peter Morelli worked wild card games; Bill Vinovich, Jerome Boger, Walt Coleman and Tony Corrente worked divisional games; Terry McAulay worked the NFC Championship and Bill Leavy worked the AFC Championship. The refs who didn?t make the playoffs were Walt Anderson, Clete Blakeman, Carl Cheffers, Ed Hochuli, John Parry, Gene Steratore, Jeff Triplette and Ron Winter.

It doesn?t take a math major to figure out that there?s something fishy about giving playoff assignments to 10 out of 18 refs. When you?re picking 10 from a pool of 18, by definition, you?re picking one who is below average. Does it really make sense for a below average ref to work a playoff game?

It would make a lot more sense to identify the four best referees in the league over the course of the regular season and make them the four playoff referees. Those four would then work the wild card games and the divisional round. Then the league office would award the two conference championship assignments to the two referees who grade out the best in the first two rounds of the playoffs. After the conference championship games, the NFL could give the referee who graded out better in the conference championship the Super Bowl assignment, and give the other conference championship ref a trip to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl.

If a close call is being decided and a playoff game is on the line, wouldn?t you rather have the first-, second-, third- or fourth-best ref making the call, instead of the 10th-best ref?

When it comes to the Super Bowl assignment, the NFL continues to value taking turns, even if it means putting the calls into the hands of someone who did not grade out as the league?s best referee. The NFL?s rules state only that an official has to be among the Top 5 highest-graded officials at his position to work the Super Bowl, and the rules specifically state that no official can work two Super Bowls in a row. But why not always assign the Super Bowl to the No. 1 highest-graded referee? And why shouldn?t an official work consecutive Super Bowls if he grades out as the best in the NFL for two consecutive seasons?

Although the NFL has not confirmed the assignment, it?s been widely reported that Jerome Boger will work this year?s Super Bowl. That has raised some eyebrows with other officials, who claim Boger?s grades were artificially enhanced by the league office, and the officiating website FootballZebras.com has raised questions about why Boger is working a Super Bowl when he has never previously worked a conference championship game.

The NFL doesn?t give out details about referees? grades, so there?s no way to say for sure whether Boger was the best ref in the NFL this season, according to the league?s criteria. It would make a lot more sense for the NFL to simply say this: The best officials will always work the Super Bowl.
