Soak celery in a bowl of ice water for about 15 minutes. Drain, pat dry and cut into ? inch pieces.
Whisk vinegar, honey and salt in a large bowl until blended. Add pears and gently stir to coat. Add celery, cheese and pecans and combine by stirring. Season to with pepper. Divide lettuce leaves among 6 plates and top with a portion of salad. Serve at room temperature or chilled.
Note: To toast chopped pecans, cook in a small dry skillet over medium-low heat, stirring constantly until fragrant and lightly browned (about 2-4 minutes).

Strength training is an important part of any fitness routine and you don?t need to be a body builder to benefit from strength training. A well designed strength-training program can provide the following benefits:
Increased strength of bones, muscles and connective tissues, also leading to a decreased risk of injury. For women this also means a decreased risk of osteoporosis.
Increased muscle mass. Adults lose about ? pound of muscle per year after the age of 25, mostly due to decreased activity. Guideline recommends postoperative blood thinners, compression, early mobilization to prevent clots
Rosemont, Ill. -- An updated clinical practice guideline released last week by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Board of Directors recommends how to reduce the likelihood of blood clots after hip or knee replacement surgery, procedures that more than 800,000 Americans undergo each year. The new guideline suggests use of preventive treatments and advises against routinely screening patients after surgery using ultrasound imaging.
"Hip and knee arthroplasty [joint replacement surgery] is among the most successful of procedures in terms of restoring function and minimizing pain. However, one possible complication that orthopaedic surgeons are concerned about is venous thromboembolic disease," said Joshua Jacobs, MD, Academy second vice president, an orthopaedic surgeon at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, who was chairman of the workgroup that developed the guideline.
Thromboembolic disease encompasses two conditions: deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or formation of a blood clot in a deep vein such as in the thigh or calf, and pulmonary embolism (PE). In the relatively uncommon event of a PE, pieces of a clot break free and travel through the vein to the lung, where they can lodge in an artery. PE typically causes no symptoms, however possible symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, light headedness or chest congestion. In very rare cases, PE can be fatal. Likewise, in many patients, DVT causes no symptoms. However, in some patients, DVT can lead to symptoms such as leg swelling and pain that can necessitate further treatment or rehospitalization. The goal of the orthopaedic surgeon is to prevent, as much as possible, the occurrence of PE and DVT following total hip and knee replacement.
According to the guideline, in the absence of prophylaxis, DVT occurs in about 37 percent of patients, as detected by imaging. The majority of those patients will remain asymptomatic and will require no further treatment. Recent studies in Denmark show that only 0.7 percent of hip replacement patients and 0.9 percent of knee replacement patients require hospitalization because of DVT in the first three months after surgery.
"After looking at all available scientific research evidence, in a rigorous fashion to minimize bias, we made recommendations that can help guide practitioners in the safest and most effective ways to prevent this potentially serious complication," said Jacobs.
Among the preventive measures the experts analyzed for safety and effectiveness are mechanical compression devices, designed to improve blood flow in the legs after surgery, as well as drug therapy. Drug therapy involves anticoagulants, commonly called blood thinners, as well as aspirin, which interferes with blood clotting by acting on platelets.
The work group also outlined suggestions for future research to fill in the evidence gaps that were apparent through an exhaustive and systematic review of the medical literature. Further research is deemed critical to develop the optimum strategies to prevent venous thromboembolic disease in the safest and most effective manner.
From the evidence reviewed, the workgroup made the following recommendations for physicians treating patients before hip or knee replacement:
Patients should stop taking antiplatelet medications (a type of anticoagulant), such as aspirin and clopidogrel (Plavix), because of the increased risk of blood loss during surgery with these drugs.
A patient should discuss the timing of stopping any medication with his or her physician.
A prior DVT or PE is an additional risk factor for thromboembolic disease and it is important that patients discuss any such event with his or her surgeon. There is insufficient evidence to recommend for or against routinely assessing patients for other possible risk factors.
Patients may want to have the surgery performed under regional anesthesia, such as epidural or spinal, rather than general anesthesia. Although evidence suggests that these regional approaches do not affect the occurrence of DVT or PE, they do limit blood loss.
The workgroup also made these recommendations for care after hip or knee replacement:
Hip and knee replacement patients should not have routine postoperative screening for thromboembolic disease with duplex ultrasonography (an ultrasound test that shows how blood moves through the arteries and veins). Screening with this test does not significantly reduce the rate of symptomatic DVT or PE or the rate of fatal PE.
Patients should receive anticoagulant therapy (unless they have a medical reason for not being able to use these drugs, such as a bleeding disorder or active liver disease) and/or mechanical compression devices after a hip or knee replacement surgery. There is, however, insufficient evidence to recommend any particular preventive strategy or the duration of these treatments. Patients should discuss the duration and type of preventive treatment with their physician.
After hip or knee replacement, patients should get up and walk as soon as safely possible. Although there is insufficient evidence that "early mobilization" reduces DVT rates, early mobilization is low cost, of minimal risk and consistent with current practice.

ENSENADA, Mexico (Reuters) ? Governors along the U.S.-Mexico border agreed on Thursday to examine how to create shared databases where they can swap DNA and other biometric information on criminals in an effort to curb the flow of guns and drugs between the two countries.
Officials announced the agreement at the end of an annual conference of regional leaders from both sides of the border that this year failed to attract many chief executives.
New Mexico's Republican governor Susana Martinez was the only U.S. governor in attendance along with three governors, out of the six invited, from the Mexican side. The Texas governor, Republican Presidential hopeful Rick Perry, was not present and his state did not sign the final agreement.
Drug violence has exploded along the border in recent years as the Mexican government, with U.S. support, takes on powerful cartels smuggling narcotics, illegal immigrants and weapons across the nearly 2,000-mile line.
"The hope is that every convicted criminal (deported from the United States) will return with biometric information that follows him back into Mexico," said Jose Osuna, governor of Baja California. The data could then be used by Mexican authorities to fight crime, he said.
Mexican President Felipe Calderon says voracious U.S. drug consumers are partly to blame for the spiraling violence, which has killed more than 42,000 people in Mexico during the five years of his term.
He also points to a river of U.S. guns flowing south across the border, including high-powered assault weapons that fuel escalating drug battles.
The U.S. government is still dealing with a scandal around a controversial operation at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), known as "Fast and Furious," that allowed weapons to move freely over the border.
Governors at the meeting urged U.S. officials to better track weapon sales and showed their support for U.S. President Barack Obama's latest efforts to curb the weapons trade.
The nearly three-decade-old conference was designed to soothe tensions along the busy dividing line.
But last year, Arizona Republican Governor Jan Brewer canceled the event after her Mexican counterparts protested the state's tough immigration laws. This year the governor pulled out at the last minute, saying through a spokesperson she had to attend to pressing state government business.

The French citizen decided to embark on a lengthy search into truths that he believed both Arabs and Jews were entitled to know.
In the film, which proves that Arabs, especially those from North Africa, played a major role in saving Jews from the Nazi extermination campaign, Ferroukhi implies that the Holocaust is a historical event that concerns Arabs as much as it does Jews. He stresses that knowing its details help bridge the gap between the two peoples.
The Holocaust, the movie implies, demonstrates the tolerance of Arabs and the nobility of the Islamic faith through the story of a Jewish singer who was mistook as a Muslim Arab during the Nazi occupation of France.
The singer is played by third-generation Algerian immigrant Tahar Rahim, while the role of Si Kaddour Benghabrit, the imam of the Grande Mosqu?e de Paris (The Grand Mosque of Paris), is played by French actor Michael Lonsdale.
The mosque is known to have saved more than 100 Jews from the Holocaust by giving them Muslim identification documents that enabled them to leave the country and escape persecution.
In addition, the movie highlights the fact that the Holocaust was not only deadly for to European Jews , but to Arab Jews as well.
?Although the Holocaust is a European story, it is also an Arab one,? said Ferroukhi.
?Germans and their allies took control of North Africa for three years, and this region had been home to more than half a million Jews.?
The movie deals with the tragedy of 5,000 North African Jews who were killed by the Nazis and the way Muslim inhabitants of the region sympathized with their plight. Scenes in the film show sermons in Algeria in which imams warn Muslims against seizing the confiscated property of Jews and tell the story of an Algerian man who gave shelter to several Jewish families in his home to protect them from Germans.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Facebook has teamed up with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and National Federation of Independent Business to launch a program that includes giving away $10 million in advertising credits to small businesses. The publication reports:
The new program will officially kick off next month with a cross-country road show in coordination with state and local chambers of commerce and regional NFIB offices. At locations still to be determined, Facebook officials and members of the two business groups will meet with local businesses to discuss best practices for marketing to customers through Facebook.
Then in January, Facebook will begin giving away $50 per business in free advertising credits to as many as 200,000 small businesses.
