VALDESE - Loy Ray and Doris Burris have been selected as the Valdese Parade Grand Marshalls for the 2011 Valdese Christmas Parade which will be held on December 3rd beginning at 10:00am.
?Loy Ray and Doris have been a vital part of our Community?, states Barbara Hefner, Valdese Community Affairs Director. ?As owners of the Rock Drug Store, Loy Ray and Doris have contributed to the community through their involvement with the Town and the Valdese Merchants Association.?
Originally the Rock Drug Store was opened in the early 1930?s by Robert and Bertie Bonner.?
The store was located in the rock building next to the Old Rock School on Main Street.? On August 14, 1945, Loy Ray and Violet Burris, who had just moved to the area from Cleveland, North Carolina, purchased the business from the Bonner family.
Loy Ray Burris, Jr., the only son of Loy Ray and Violet, worked at the store throughout his high school and college years.? After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy and serving in the Army, Burris returned to Valdese and Rock Drug in 1954.
In the 1960?s Loy Ray Burris, Sr. opened a second store on Main Street, the Waldensian Pharmacy.? After his death in April 1968, the two stores were consolidated, and the business moved to its current location in July 1970.?
The Rock Drug Store has changed over the years, but it remains a time-honored and beloved business in Valdese.? Margaret Clarke started working at Rock Drug in 1959 and is still behind the prescription counter today.? The store?s soda fountain, well known for its egg salad sandwich, continues to be a popular lunch spot.
Loy Ray and Doris Burris have five children, sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.? Several of the children and grandchildren have worked in the store over the years.? After 66 years, Loy Ray Burris, Jr. retired on August 29, 2011.? The store was purchased by his son-in-law and daughter, Bruce and Marianne Cannon.
