Driving through the picturesque community of Serenbe, Georgia, an eco-progressive haven just 30 minutes outside of Atlanta, it's easy to see why this area was selected to be the site for the 2012 Green Home. The 1,000-acre community smartly blends sustainable living with a focus on local businesses and small-town sensibilities. According to Jack Thomasson, HGTV house planner, "It?s a farm-to-table environment with all of the modern conveniences you?d ever want."
Pulling up to the front of the house, we were immediately struck by the modern farmhouse curb appeal. The floor-to-roof windows let in a ton of natural light to the house, while the stacked stone basement level adds to the rustic vibe.
Living room
The 2,300-square-foot home is divided into three levels. On the main level is an airy living room that Thomasson describes as "surprisingly green." For example, the mirror frame was crafted from salvaged fence wood, yet looks quite chic flanked by two wingback chairs.
The neutral color palette of the furniture allows the homeowner to easily switch out accent colors to give the room a different feel, according to the interior designer Linda Woodrum from TS Hudson Interiors.
Outdoor living room
The neutral colors continue outdoors where the durable TREX seating arrangement is flanked by greenery. The white and gray fabric colors allow the outdoor scenery to take center stage, while the easy-to-maintain gravel defines the space.
Kitchen
The open-concept dining and kitchen space keeps the eye moving and opens to the terrace, making entertaining at parties super-easy. Thomasson points out that the kitchen countertops are locally made from polished concrete that has an extra-special local touch: They include repurposed pieces of beer bottle glass from SweetWater Brewery, a local favorite based in Atlanta, and bits of seashell from the Georgia coast. Talk about a great dinner-party conversation piece!
