Company to cut 120 jobs in Greensboro

RF Micro Devices is cutting about 120 jobs at its operations in Greensboro.

The company, which makes various components for the mobile and wireless industries, confirmed the cuts in a statement late Tuesday night but offered few other details.

Some of the affected employees are being considered as candidates for other open positions, company officials said.

Below is an excerpt of the company's statement:

"Although these reductions are difficult, they are necessary to match changes in technology over time....RFMD has always utilized a variety of technologies to design products according to specific performance and cost characteristics required by our customers. This...sometimes results in staffing level changes at our various manufacturing locations."

RF Micro was founded in 1991 and remains headquartered in Greensboro. It currently employs about 1,400 in Greensboro and about 4,000 worldwide.

The company has had various staff fluctuations, both positive and negative, over the years.
