Tributes pour in for honeymooners killed in Maldives (AFP)

COLOMBO (AFP) ? Two British honeymooners who died in the tourist paradise of the Maldives, after their vehicle crashed into a tree, received tributes from family and friends.

Staff at the northern Kuredu Island Resort discovered Jonathan and Emma Gray, early Saturday, while another foreign national believed to be involved in the accident, was found injured.

Floral tributes were left at their home, both 25, in Halifax on Sunday, with teddy bears and an empty bottle of champagne.

The couple had a six-month-old son, Jake, who was not with them on holiday.

Emma's brother, who did not give his name, described them "as a wonderful couple".

"It is all too raw at the moment", he added.

Gray was a teacher at Holy Trinity Primary School in Halifax. School governor the Rev Martin Russell paid tribute to her.

"She was a very popular teacher at our school, a very genuine person and very enthusiastic. She loved her children. She was very popular with the staff, " he said.

Police spokesman Ahmed Shiyam told AFP by telephone from the capital Male said that the pair "were riding a four-wheel scooter similar to a quad bike, which met with an accident."

The couple arrived on Kuredu last Thursday to honeymoon on the white sandy beach island, where luxurious thatched roof bungalows are built over turquoise blue waters.

Tourism is a key form of revenue for the Indian Ocean atoll nation of 1,200 chain of islands.

For the six months to June, 53,226 British holidaymakers arrived in the Maldives, 4.8 percent down on the same period in 2010.
