State colleges: Cal baseball team beats sloppy Utes

The Utah baseball team committed three errors and allowed five unearned runs in a 9-5 loss to California in a Pac-12 game Saturday at Spring Mobile Ballpark.

Cal?s Devon Rodriguez hit a grand slam off Utah starter Joe Pond in the second inning, putting the Utes (8-8, 0-2 Pac-12) in a 5-0 hole.

Pond (2-2) took the loss, striking out five while allowing nine hits, seven runs (three earned) and three walks over five innings.

Utah outhit the Golden Bears 12-11, but the Utes stranded nine baserunners in the game.

Cal improved to 12-7 and 2-0.

Tyler Yagi, Dallas Carroll, Trey Nielsen and Tyler Relf each had two hits for the Utes. Yagi drove in two runs, and Relf had an RBI triple.

San Diego 10, BYU 9 (14) ? Kris Bryant hit a walk-off home run ? his second of the series ? as the host Toreros beat the Cougars in 14 innings to complete a three-game sweep.

"It doesn?t get any more bitter than this," BYU coach Mike Littlewood said. "We need to find a way to get over the hump."

The Cougars (9-10) turned four double plays to stay in the game, and Brock Whitney went 4 for 8 with four RBIs, coming up a triple short of the cycle.

Saint Mary?s 3, Utah Valley 0 ? In Moraga, Calif., Ben Griset had 12 strikeouts and held UVU to five hits to earn the shutout win.

UVU starter Ty Hansen (1-2) took the loss, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out three in six innings of work.

SLCC 11-9, Colorado Northwestern 1-7 ? The host Bruins had 24 total hits Saturday in the doubleheader, completing a four-game series sweep. Salt Lake Community College starter Skylar Janisse gave up just one run in five innings to earn the win in the opener. Steven Adam had a triple and two RBIs in the nightcap, and Connor Williams had two RBIs.

Softball

Syracuse 2, Utah 1 ? In Honolulu, the Orange scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead, then held on for the win.

Kelsi Hoopiiaina went 3 for 4 for Utah. She hit a two-out double in the seventh, but the Utes were unable to secure the tying run.

Utah had taken a 1-0 lead after Marissa Mendenhall led off the fifth inning with a double, and Shelbi Everett drove her in with a single.

Utah State 3, Idaho State 2; Utah State 6, Portland State 5 (8) ? In Boise, Idaho, the Aggies rallied after trailing 5-0 in the seventh inning of the second game, and went on to beat Portland State in eight innings. Becca Walker got things rolling with a solo home run to lead off the seventh.
