Steve Smith and the Carolina Panthers rank 26th among the world's most valuable sports franchises, according to Forbes.
Nike can?t find the Carolina Panthers, but Forbes ranks the team among the 50 most valuable sports franchises in the world. The financial magazine combines its yearly valuations of franchises in various sports for a combined list. This week, it published the 2013 ranking, including the Panthers at No. 26.
Charlotte?s NFL franchise is worth $1 billion according to Forbes, the same valuation the magazine made in its August 2012 analysis of all 32 pro football franchises. The new franchise values for the Panthers and NFL teams from Forbes are expected next month.
European soccer team Real Madrid tops the list of the 50 most valuable franchises. Forbes says it's worth an estimated $3.3 billion. The highest-ranking U.S. sports team is Major League Baseball?s New York Yankees, No. 4 on the list at $2.3 billion. Thirty of the 32 NFL franchises ranked in the top 50 as determined by Forbes. The Dallas Cowboys are fifth overall, worth $2.1 billion, and most valuable among NFL teams.
Jerry Richardson led a Panthers ownership group that paid $206 million for the expansion franchise in 1993. The former fast-food restaurant executive remains the team?s majority owner and, earlier this year, negotiated an agreement with the city of Charlotte to use $87.5 million of local taxpayer money to replace the video scoreboards and make other improvements at the Panthers? privately owned 74,000-seat stadium.
As for Nike, the sneaker and apparel company dealt the Panthers (and itself) a blow by mistakenly using a map of South Carolina as the backdrop for a new T-shirt featuring the Panthers logo and the letters ?NC? for the team?s home state.
Training camp for the 2013 season starts next week.
