slideshow With the rise of popularity in the spread offense and more teams using a broader passing game, the name of the game is reps in order to get things right once the season comes.Passing and pass defense was the main focus this week at Calhoun?s two-day passing camp held at the Calhoun River Soccer Complex.
Calhoun coach Hal Lamb said the camp provided much needed reps for several area teams in the 7-on-7 format.
?I think it was a great camp,? said Lamb. ?We had seven schools and a few brought a second JV group so we had five games going on at once.
?Everyone got a lot of work done, and everyone got to work on specifically what they wanted to with each of their teams.?
Along with host Calhoun, Model, Pepperell, Adairsville, Woodland, Fannin County and LaFayette brought groups to the camp. Calhoun, Pepperell and Adairsville also brought JV teams to get some work in as well.
Lamb said while many camps focus more on competition, this camp served more as extra practice time for each of the teams.
?Our camp is a little different than others,? said Lamb. ?We don?t keep score or worry about who beats who here. We scrimmage and coaches can watch their players, and if they want to stop it for second to teach something then they can.?
The camp was Tuesday and Wednesday and went from 8:30 a.m. to around noon each day. For Calhoun, the time working on the passing game is big because they will be breaking in a new starting quarterback this fall after Taylor Lamb has been the man taking the snaps the last two seasons.
Lamb has now moved on to Appalachian State after graduating in May, and rising senior Fields Chapman is expected to fill the starting role with rising sophomore Kaelen Riley as the main backup.
Hal Lamb said this extra time is big for the new guys that will be taking over the quarterback position for the Jackets this season.
?It?s really important for these guys to get snaps in these type situations,? said Lamb. ?It?s not exactly the same as what they?re going to see in games, but it?s good for them to see coverages and the whole secondary.
?We still need to see what they do with a defensive line coming at them and when you add the running game in, but this week was really good for them.?
The camp was one of the final phases of what has been a busy summer program for Calhoun. The Jackets sent a group of around thirty players to Mercer Offense camp in June. They then had a group of close to 50 go to FCA Camp at West Georgia July 8-11.
This coming week, Calhoun will head back to West Georgia for team camp Monday through Wednesday. After a day off on Thursday, the Jackets will begin fall practice with acclimation days starting on Friday.
?We?re ready to get busy,? said Lamb.
?We?ve done really well with the passing stuff and summer workouts. But we?re going to start shifting our focus to other big things this week like our running game and stopping the run.?
Lamb, who is entering his 16th season as Jackets head coach, and Calhoun will be looking for their 13th straight region title and their sixth straight appearance in the Class AA State Championship Game this fall.
They will host Rome High for a scrimmage at Phil Reeve Stadium on Aug. 16 and will then open the regular season on Aug. 30 at Ridgeland.
